Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Dear God, yes. That's just trashy.
Edited by Theatre_Maven_3695I'll PM Dravencour and Aquila89. They're one who added some of those real life entries years ago and still active.
Edited by Kuruni(bad joke edited out, ignore this part)
I'm leaning on cutting the actual notes, and then leaving a commented-out warning on top of the page saying "Please don't add real-life examples, blah blah blah etc.", that seems like the best option.
Edited by RobertTYLYeah, the main page doesn't seem to allow real life examples, so the quotes page should not allow them too.
Space Battles Dot Com fanworks (unnoficial) index in my Sandbox.^^ I agree. Why did you still post it?
TV Tropes's No. 1 bread themed lesbian. she/her, fae/faer^^^ Is it really appropriate to be joking about tropers with suicidal tendencies here?
Or ever, really?
Agreed, that’s just a step too far. Robert, I think you need to pull back on the snark and jokes, or at least know when to use such things properly.
Edited by harryhenryPersonally, I can't tell if it's a sincere black comedy joke or a parody of people who tell jokes like that.
Look, they might not have done the best thing with the joke, it happens. Not everyone has the same sense of humor or is offended by the same thing, though I am personally neutral on it based on what I grew up on and my overall personality. What matters is that the quotes page should not have real life quotes if the page doesn't have real life examples. I'll delete them and put a note.
Edited by Piterpicher Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods Of Incremental)Late to the discussion but the fact that there were actual suicide notes on the page is both horrifying and nauseatingly tasteless. I see Piterpicher added a commented-out note asking not to add them in the future—thanks. It's a bit rough to look at if you've actually suffered from thoughts like that.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup Of Complaining | Troper WallYeah, uh, this is really awful. Put them in the bin.
Self-serious autistic metalhead who goes by any pronouns. (avvie template source)Yeah, nice job Pitcher
I only added Hunter S. Thompson's suicide note, the content of which was widely reported, since he was a famous person (it's on his Wikipedia page too.) I definitely wouldn't add the suicide note of someone non-famous, and if you want to remove Thompson's, I will not object.
So I just got called into this thread due to what I ended up posting in that quotes page some years ago.
The suicide note in question was from a Reddit thread from some time ago, where people ended up posting some of the more notable suicide notes that they came across from news stories and elsewhere. This particular note came from a medical student who was apparently pushed into this by their parents, who it seems were real education-obsessed parents who didn't give a damn about what their kid themselves wanted, and as such, it had a very "fuck you" kind of feel to it that was quite striking in my mind.
I posted it because I was seeing a lot of real life notes on that page, quite a lot of which, like the one from Leelah Alcorn (the one that ended with "Fix society. Please."), were very saddening. No one deserves to be driven to the point where they feel that killing themselves is the only way out.
If you want the note that I posted removed, feel free to get rid of it.
Edited by DravencourI agree with outright cutting those real life notes.
As for my thoughts on this, I believe that only the more notable real life notes (such as the ones from more famous people like Hunter S. Thompson and Robert E Howard, and things like the Leelah Alcorn thing which have become notable enough to be mentioned on Wikipedia) should be allowed to stay. Notes from more random, non-famous cases (such as what I ended up putting down) should not be put on the page. Furthermore, I see no problem with having new quotes vetted via locking the page and requiring people to go through the Edit Locked Pages thread if they want to add stuff to the thread.
Edited by DravencourOoof, Robert...that was in poor taste.
Really poor taste...
I very much agree with everyone about Robert's joke. That joke was in very poor taste given the topic in question.
I already apologized for that — in the same post, no less. But yeah, if you guys have any issues I guess I can edit it out
Maybe we could find a compromise and allow public figures or those who are at least mainstream, as their suicide notes were already heavily publicized, but ordinary people's suicide notes should be off limits.
EDIT: Actually, looking at the page, I'd rather keep all the real life ones deleted. It's just uncomfortable when juxtaposed with all the fictional examples and parodies.
However, several of the deleted examples were fictional and deleted by mistake, like one from Homer Simpson, a joke from George Carlin (he didn't die of suicide), some song lyrics, and a gag from ASDF Movie. These should be re-added.
Edited by mightymewtron I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Just re-added most (if not all) of the fictional examples that were mistakenly removed
Y'ALL JUST GOT SHREKT
So, while doing a Wiki Walk, I stumbled across Quotes.Goodbye Cruel World, and immediately noticed the fact that it has real-life suicide notes on it. And this isn’t just one or two quotes, either, it’s over half the page. While I do understand that other quote pages have real-life quotes, it just feels very uncomfortable reading the suicide note of a real person who killed themself. Should the real-life quotes be removed?
