The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
Find a Trope:
openTrapped in the nature
The hero relies on technological weapons and devices, but he has been trapped into a location where it's just him and the nature and no easy way to return to civilization (a lone island, time travel to prehistoric times, left in an alien world with no civilizations, etc). He still have his things, but they don't work or only work for a limited time: there's no way to plug machines to a power source, no way to recharge batteries, no way to get supplies...
openToo much grief to speak. (answered)
A character is asked to deliver a speech at a loved one's funeral, but they are too sad to find the words and end up saying very little or nothing at all. That person usually leaves the space to try and collect their thoughts.
Edited by LermisopenUnfair Sex Advantage
- A character is dropping home a love interest he met from the party and who's very intoxicated. Nonetheless, the love interest wants to have sex with the former, who respects her too much to go through with it while she is drunk.
open"Don't tell anyone I was nice to you, ok?"
What's the trope for when someone (typically a Jerk with a Heart of Gold or Lovable Alpha Bitch) wants people to think they are mean, but, due to secretly being a Nice Guy/girl, do something nice for someone but request they don't tell anyone else about it?
openFinal quest to tie together related questlines Videogame
In Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, there's four role questlines you can go through depending on your class, which all center around hunting down a Cardinal Virtue. By completing all four, you unlock one last quest, which explains who's responsible for the Virtues existing in the first place.
This is something in the same realm as Branch-and-Bottleneck Plot Structure, but it doesn't seem to fit any of the subtropes because this is all sidequests, so you don't even have to unlock the final quest at all, much less do all four role questlines (the main story does require you to finish one, but that's it).
Edited by wingedcatgirlresolved "Object Gathering Dust" gag Western Animation
In an early season episode of The Simpsons, Mr. Burns gives Homer a bizarre stone totem. The family can't sell it or use it, so they leave it in the basement.
Thus, now it's been over two decades, and every time we see the basement, the totem's there...
Is there a trope for that? A thing is used as a joke once, and keeps showing up to reminds us of its uselessness?
openAccidental mascot?
Is there a YMMV trope for when a character becomes the face of the work despite not being the main character or marketed as a mascot (e.g. Sans from Undertale)?
openVRChat tropes
I was watching videos from VRChat streamer Kromia, when I noticed a couple of bits from her highlights on YouTube that were worth looking at.
- Instant Faceplant
- Summoned object falls from sky
- Kromia is testing out a new function for her avatar that involves a big fancy light show. When this effect ends, A Twinkle in the Sky precedes the greatsword variant of her own sword plummeting towards the ground and landing in front of her as if it was dropped from orbit.
openAnctipated Backlash Nod
- Like someone writes this book that contains a chapter that is more likely to generate outrage, for good and bad, and the person is quite aware and alludes to it in what they're writing.
openLoves to travel?
What's the trope for a character who travels a lot for fun? Not usually a nomad but can be.
openKeeping a dumb character from source-material equally or more stupid in supplemental material
Is there a name for this trope?
Edited by MistRideropenSea life in lava
Aquatic life that inhabits lava.
As an example, I can list the Claykken during his rematch from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse and SPC-3284-J, an SCP joke article about lava sharks.
openNo Title Film
Is there a trope for when an aspect of a work is dropped in a modern adaptation either because it is considered annoying, or because the adaptation is modernizing the work?
Example: In the upcoming Scooby doo movie Scoob, Shaggy does not say "Zoinks" all the time and Scooby's speech does not constantly contain "R's" . This is presumably because the former is outdated slang, and because both speech patterns are considered annoying to some people.
openAlternate Universe Counterpart
A fangame based on a popular franchise, but taking place in an alternate universe from that franchise, has some characters who have clear similarities to characters in the main franchise, but are not actually the canon characters in question.
Which trope fits this best? Just expy?
Edited by DrNoPumaopenPissing as an insult
Someone urinates (or, rarely, defecates) in front of (or worse, right onto) someone else to insult/humiliate them.
Do we have this?
openThe character everyone likes
The main characters are a Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits who don't get along, whether it's merely snarking at each other or to the point of physical violence. But there's one character whom everyone gets along with. Often female, they might be The Heart or the Team Mom, but not necessarily- they could equally be someone the group has to look out for (like a kid) that everyone just feels protective of without doing anything that keeps the group working together.
Do we have a trope for such a character?
opentrying to con each other
Character A is trying to con character B, but as it turns out, character B was also trying to con character A.
openImpatient Growth Fixation Bottleneck
Do we have a trope for that certain critical period of personal growth (potentially an entire character arc) where, among a group of talents/experts/empowered, there is a member suffering from noticeable decline/stagnation compared to their peers (or at least a rival) in spite of their efforts? (A staple of the shonen genre)
Said fixated character may train themselves to breaking points for seemingly meager gains. They may compare themselves to other members of their group or to that of a rival, angered or confused as to how/why those individuals are growing faster/stronger than themselves. Their personality may warp/deteriorate, becoming more aggressive or depressive, liable to snap out at others even when they come bearing constructive criticism or empathy/pity. They may be liable to consider and exploit shortcuts, whether they be as benign as copying others' techniques or potentially self-destructive like taking drugs for instant undeniable results.
Friends of said character may be torn between offering direct support, or take a more hands-off approach with the understanding that coddling them will only undermine their self-confidence and stunt their growth.
Successfully overcoming this period may yield lasting results of significant character development often achieved through improving/creating something that is truly their own and subsequently overcoming a meaningful conflict through their own efforts (bonus points if they won through the virtues of accumulated effort while their defeated opponent took shortcuts).
(Note: If we don't have this specifically as a trope, permission granted for others to take a first stab at it.)
the Girls' Frontline Madness Chapter ending theme is basically a sillier-in-tone arrangement of this song (the matching part is timestamped). do we have any trope that fits the bill?
