Now there's something I didn't expect them to ever actually do. Probably helps that it's already mostly translated, but more retro Fire Emblem is neat. Now for all the rest Nintendo.

3 is in a really awkward situation, since it'd probably make more business sense to port and translate 12 instead.

I hold the first Fire Emblem in similar light as I hold The Beatles.

I respect the hell out of it for being revolutionary, and for all the amazing things it influenced that came after, but it's not actually something I enjoy firsthand.

Sacred Stones Ch.6-8

Ch.6: After resetting two times due to enemies coming out of nowhere and ambushed my team, I decided to do this chapter the boring way. I put Seth on the fort so he killed half a dozen enemies in one turn, then Seth headed straight for the boss. The rest of the team held up inside the forest area, waiting for Seth to kill the boss before the Cavaliers overwhelmed them.

Ch.7: I reset one time due to Lute getting killed by a Steel Axe, then Artur got critted with Thunder. The third time went fairly smoothly. I could have ferried Seth to fight the central enemy group, but I decided to let Vanessa kill them instead. Seth did fight off the Ballista and the boss though.

Ch.8: A smooth sailing with no reset. The main challenge of this chapter is that Team Eirika needed Seth to handle the Armors while Team Ephraim needed Seth to kill the Mages. I decided to let Seth join Team Ephraim. Franz was positioned at the chokepoint to tank the group of Armors while Lute and Artur threw magic spells at them. Ephraim effortlessly handled the Cavalier reinforcement. Vanessa's Strength gain was disappointing for the Prologue, but at least she promoted at Lv.12. I will need to feed her some Energy Rings.

Here's the current team. 4 resets so far.

The problem with New Mystery is that it needs two screens.

I doubt we'll get any more Japan-only games for at least a while; this smacks of something meant to commemorate the 30th anniversary that got delayed due to Covid-19. At least they remembered that this year is the anniversary. Since I played a ROM on my Wii, I should really pick this up to erase my guilt.

There's going to be a cool special edition. PLEASE don't let this be yet another America exclusive.

Having two screens isn't much of a problem.

Megaman ZX has ports on modern consoles and it uses the two screens more extensively.

No one:

Absolutely no one:

Nintendo: "LET'S LOCALIZE FE 1"

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Archanea. But I'm not nearly as optimistic as I should be about this. At best, this is merely testing the viability of localizing the early games for a new generation of Fire Emblem fans and reintroduce the classics that built the foundation for the series. If it does well in sales and reception, then Nintendo will likely move on to official releases for Gaiden, the SFC entries, and Binding Blade. At worst, it would be just that one time thing to commemorate the series' 30th anniversary, no harm no foul.

The beginning of the announcement trailer is super cringey though. Seriously, we just gonna pretend Shadow Dragon doesn't exist? Like "Fuck that shitty DS remake, THIS is the first Marth game outside of Japan"?

I do want that artbook tho

Shadow Dragon is not the same game as Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light.

It is interesting that Shiida has been renamed Caeda, like she was in Warriors.

It's still a remake of Marth's story, so non-Japanese players have had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with Marth. I'm also not sure how many people would feel inclined to play both (I know after Shadows of Valentia, I have pretty close to no desire to play original Gaiden).

Kuroi: You are correct. Shadow Dragon is a strictly better game; since the release of the remakes, the only reason to play the NES games is to see how the series got started. That's why I played them, even if I waited until I'd finished each one to play its remake. I personally think SDatBoL holds up pretty well, but Gaiden is bleh.

I still think it's good to have this in some form, in the name of preservation. That said, it would probably have made more sense to just drop it on NES NSO, but I guess that rewriting source code from scratch is easier than patching 6502 assembly.

In other news, I've been pondering classes and how they might be implemented in the next (non-remake) Fire Emblem game. This is just some ideas, building off the Three Houses implementation.

First up, I want to bring back knives/shurikens, and also make fire, wind, and thunder magic discrete skills rather than lumping them all together as black magic. To this end, I'd also rename white magic to light magic.

To differentiate the magics, thunder has a greater variety of long-range attacks, fire has more area-of-effect attacks, and wind has more position-altering attacks. Wind is extra-effective against fliers, fire against cavalry, and thunder against heavy armour and wyverns.

The idea was posited, either in this thread or the Three Houses thread, that high-tier classes should have certification in lower-tier classes as prerequisites, as already exists with Dark Mage -> Dark Bishop and Thief -> Trickster. I'm going to run with that.

There should be seperate class lines for pegasi and wyverns.

Master classes will be exclusively hyrbids.

Non-magic classes can equip learned spells in skill slots.

I don't know...I'm not against the idea of separating Thunder, Fire and Wind magic, but combining it with 3H's system might be a bit much.

I'd at least like to see the ability to wield multiple kinds at an earlier point than Master Tier? Unless you could either way, and your class just dictates what you get a bonus in.

Some of those Master classes could probably be consolidated as well.

Idea: Remake the Elibe games as a single game in the style of Genealogy of the Holy War. Part 1 covers the events of The Binding Blade. Part 2 follows those characters' children through the events of The Blazing Blade, with everybody getting stat bonuses depending on who their non-set parent ended up with.

Bad idea. These two games are not one big story. And the parent-child relations are extremely miminal and not worth possibly crippling both games.

I think I'm also opposed, for mostly similar reasons. But to expand on the potential for Genealogy-esque inheritance:

According to Serenes Forest, there are eleven playable characters in the Binding Blade note  who are children of playable characters in Blazing. Out of the entire cast of about 55, then they only compromise about 20 percent of the playable roster. In addition, three of themnote  are products of canonical, set-in-stone pairings, while two of them note  were probably already conceived by the time of Blazing. That leaves about six characters who would stand to benefit from inheritance, and even then inheritance wouldn't be as robust in other games unless IS decides to implement skills, reclassing, etc.

EDIT: All this being said, I think the Blade of Light localization could mean that they just do a straight port of those two games, and if that's the case I wouldn't mind them being bundled. I also wouldn't be opposed to a non-conjoined remake of either, though I would prefer one of Binding just to have that be officially released internationally.

while two of them note Hugh and Igrene were probably already conceived by the time of Blazing.

This is true. Canas mentions his wife and child while Hawkeye talks with Louise about Igrene. In fact, Canas and Hawkeye (and Rebecca due to an oversight) are the only parents who actually die if defeated instead of retreating. Both of them have alternate death quotes (unlocked by clearing the game 8 times or save transfer in the jp version) that mention their respective children.
