Say what you will about modern FE, but I for one am glad that the days of "And then he died of Soap Opera Disease between games" are past.

Unlike Tellius I'm actually not sure Elibe was originally intended as a two-parter. There are a number of incongruities, like the sheer amount of Blazing characters that randomly disappeared/died/were otherwise choppily written out, and stuff like the Eight Legends coming off as WAY more sympathetic in Blazing than Binding.

If they do remake the Elibe games, I'm looking forward to Niime's critical lines. I hope they pick a voice actress who goes full ham on the "wicked witch" lines.

I tend to forget that Eliwood, as well as the rest of the Blazing Sword lords never learned the whole truth behind the Ending Winter.

It's too bad that Byleth looks to be the hero of the Three Houses story. The only time an avatar character was the hero of the story was Corrin, and you know how that turned out. (Chrom is the hero of Awakening, not Robin.)

I don't think that was the reason for Fates' failings, personally.

I've recently been playing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and that game makes me wish we get another Japan-inspired land with lots of monsters in it. I'd love to see headless warriors wielding darkness-shrouded swords (the part where they pull your heart out of your ass is optional) or enemies that, when defeated, have a giant centipede burst out and try to kill you.

Yeah, those monsters probably would look a little out of place in a Fire Emblem game, but hey, a guy can dream. I just want to see a variety of monsters in future games. I'm hoping that Three Houses will give us a nice menagerie.

As someone who eats feudal Japan-based settings up, I was personally a bit disappointed with how the feudal Japan Fire Emblem we got was just Hoshido. Basically because it was only one of two kingdoms that were given focus, I ended up not feeling totally into the whole aesthetic as much as I could've been. The fact that Hoshido is kind of obviously placed in the spot of the "peace-loving, prosperous kingdom" of the two really didn't help with that either. Not just because it feels like obvious nationalism/whitewashing of the nation it comes from/is based on, but because the darker, more dysfunctional parts of ancient Japan are actually really interesting and tbh, are a big part of why I want a full-on fuedal Japan-based Fire Emblem game with more of a focus on warring shogunates like the Sengoku period or something.

I have no issue with Byleth being the focal point over Edelgard or whoever inherently. I do have an issue with them being the focal point and the very real possibility that they'll have no personality. I forget, did Corrin have any dialogue in the marketing?

Genealogy does seem to have the most sickening villains in the entire franchise.

Their douchebaggery is outright cruel and personal, while most of the others are just kinda cartoonishly world-destroying.

I never had an issue with Kamui/Corrin as the focal point but Bithright was my first game in the franchise and is the only version of Fates I've played and aside from complaints about them getting undeserved praise, which I don't agree with, the only explanations I've seen about them being bad are a Conquest issue since said complaints are directly related to its plot.

Speaking of which, I have some ideas to fix, or at least ameliorate, Conquest if Fates ever gets some sort of definitive edition. Since this is for a remaster, or at most a remake, the story has to stay basically the same, but we can still tweak it to be less frustrating.

    Spoilers ahoy

General

Throughout the game, we get cutscenes where Corrin gradually shifts her siblings' loyalties from Garon to herself.

Also stress Nohr's food shortages as a reason why otherwise decent people are OK with plundering adjacent countries.

Ditch the crystal ball

This time around, Azura only has a vague notion of what might be going on with Garon. Gunter has more concrete but still vague suspicions.

Gunter: I think whatever that place has affected King Garon.
Corrin: What makes you say that?
Gunter: Garon was always a hard man, but in his youth, he was also a fair one. When the queen died, he fell into depression, and I believe he sought this place out. When he came back, he'd changed. He no longer had any compassion or mercy. He'd imprison and execute people for the slightest infractions, and became obsessed with conquest to the exclusion of all else.
Corrin: Is that when he murdered my birth father?
Gunter: Aye, very soon after.

The Hoshido invasion

When Corrin and Azura return with Gunter, they find out that Garon has already launched a mass invasion of Hoshido. Corrin is aghast at this, and her motivation here is to minimise casualties by a combination of having Kaze (and Shura, if he's alive) warn people through their ninja perks, and push her trademark ability to win battles without killing anybody.

(As an aside, this version of Birthright should also mention her winning several battles without killing anyone).

Izumo

Zola's orders are more sadistic. Garon wants him to torture the Hoshidan royal family to death and parade their corpses around when they conquer somewhere. Xander invokes his authority as crown prince to stop this, and even states outright that the orders are fake, but Zola and his men refuse to back down, as they are quite looking forward to killing the Hoshidans. The battle thus plays out much like in the original game, but with the fridge logic fixed and making this a better Pet the Dog moment.

At the end of the battle...

Elise: I know father can be cruel sometimes, but who could have faked such an order?
Xander: Elise... the order was real.

Wind Tribe

Fuga is less enthusiastic about Corrin here. Where in the original game his reaction is "Yep, you're clearly a good person doing good things for good reasons", here it's more like:

Fuga: I see you have a noble heart, but you walk a path of destruction.
Corrin: I... I know. It's just that if I don't do this, far more people will suffer and die.
Fuga: The Wind Tribe will remain neutral, but remember this. You are not the first person to feel compelled to do evil in the name of what you consider to be the greater good. Many in your position found that the evil they did ultimately outweighed what good they achieved. You must ensure you do not fall into the same trap.

The Fort Jinya massacre

Garon orders the massacre, as before. Corrin marches the prisoners to a nearby river, ostensibly to drown then as she doesn't want to dull her army's swords. When they get there, she instead has Felicia use her ice powers to make a frozen bridge, over which the captives can escape. Unfortunately, she still needs Sakura as a hostage, but this time Sakura sees Corrin is trying to do some measure of good and so will be less traumatised.

At the end of this map, Corrin has an idea.

Corrin: Azura, when I first came here, Mother told me about the Hoshidan throne. She said it can reveal the truth to whoever sits in it.
Azura: Yes, that's right. I sometimes saw her seat a shifty daimyo in it to get the truth out of them.
Corrin: Perhaps, if Garon were to sit on it, whatever is possessing him would make itself known.
Azura: A risky idea, Corrin, but it's your best shot to expose him

Takumi

When undead Takumi appears, Sakura tries to persuade him not to kill Corrin, because she has done good. Takumi refuses to listen, declaring Sakura a traitor who he will kill as well.

When Corrin is between life and death, her interaction with Takumi's soul is somewhat different.

Takumi: Corrin, that's not me down there.
Corrin: What do you mean?
Takumi: For months I had a... a presence in my head. It was attracted to all my anger, all my hate, and it drove me further and further into those destructive urges.
Corrin: You mean it forced your soul out of your body?
Takumi: No. Everything I said and did, the thing urged me on, but it was all me. But when I died at the Great Wall, that thing stuck in my body and brought it back.
Corrin: Oh Takumi, that's awful!
Takumi: Perhaps if I didn't try to drive you away when I first met you, things would have gone differently. Corrin, even in death it's hard for me to let those feelings go... but my body is trying to kill Sakura. Please, take the power of the Fujin Yumi and save my... no, save *our* little sister.

I mentioned it before in this thread, but I hope that if we get a Genealogy remake, we get a route where Deidre survives till the end of the story. It would be interesting to see how Deidre handles what happened to her, though it would probably require some very careful handling due to the subject matter.

I'd like a story where Julius survives, oddly enough.

[up]I suggested a scenario earlier in the thread where Deidre recovers her memory just as Arvis finishes his Sigurd roast, resulting in her making a run for it. The second act would have Seliph, Julius, and Julia as the Power Trio, with Seliph and Julia having to make sure Julius doesn't fall into the Loptous Sect's clutches at any cost.

[up]I actually had another alternate scenario in mind where Deidre regains her memories just as Arvis is about to light things up, then jumps in front of Sigurd to shield him. Arvis ends up roasting both of them, and Julius and Julia never get born.

Several years later, as Seliph goes on his quest to set things right, he encounters Manfroy as an angry drunk in a craphole tavern, ranting and raving about how Arvis ruined everything and how useless a pawn he proved in the end.

[up][up][up]Julius and Julia weren't even born until 1 year after the battle of Belhalla. With Seliph being like 19, bordering on 20 when Gen 2 begins, it also means he's anywhere from 3 to 4 years older than Julius and Julia.
