Could've avoided all that by simply branding HSG an "Otter Media Original".

That being Cruchyroll's mother company and all that.

Thoughts, in no particular order:

  • In/Spectre is absolutely not something CR is primarily responsible for being an anime, so the "Original" thing is just a brand they can put on anything they have a financial stake in
  • They say this is spanning multiple genres, but it's overwhelming tending towards action
  • Mostly original series and webcomics (though they try to pretend that Freakangels isn't). I'm guessing they're trying not to compete with the Japanese companies they work with as a licensor
  • This is probably... not especially a good thing. Historically having CR as the primary financial backer means that it's not going to have much in the way of production values, and the trailer isn't helping my concerns on that front
  • I'm kinda surprised that Korea hasn't tried to animate it's big-deal series on it's own
  • High Guardian Spice is still a thing? Must have been having production troubles
  • I guess Freak Angels is there to try to see if they can replicate Castlevania's success? Like, I enjoyed the source material, but it's absolutely not the action series everything else looks to be. Also I don't think it's long enough for a full cour

I know Webtoon also put out a promotional series of videos for Let's Play, which appears to be drawn by an American. As far as a full series goes, though, nothing has been announced.

Manhwa adaptations? I wish a lot of Korean and Chinese webtoons would get animated adaptations, but that always seemed improbable due to the medium. I've never heard of those works, though... Something like Their Story or Killing Stalking would make an interesting cartoon.

On an unrelated note, I'm surprised Our Dreams at Dusk got an English translation before Shounen Note before. Shounen Note seems more marketable.

Dang it, the Arte anime only airs in April, I was sure it was going to be next month! sad

[up]Well, just because it had a lot of requests doesn't mean a lot of people read it, just that most who did are dedicated fans.

You know, Cult Classic and all that.

It always interesting to read stuff that gets fanscans first and then later you find out they get officially localized

The image to Stock Light-Novel Hero is... something. I don't know about that trope. I only know of a few light novels, like Maria Watches Over Us, Accel World, Battery, and Satou Kashi no Dangan wa Uchinukenai. I figured light novels were just Japanese Young Adult Literature, often aimed at anime/game fans.

[up][up] I just want an English Shounen Note localization, since I doubt it'll get an anime. I could get the Spanish one, but with my luck they'd release an English one later.

That's what they are, yes, but there's a lot of common trends to them these days like any other medium/genre. Like the surplus of isekai light novels. The stock light novel hero is definitely a common thing, popularized by Sword Art Online.

Not that the YA can't be just as barren of originality.

I mean for how many years were they just "Like Harry Potter but" or "Like The Hunger Games but"?

So they're mirror copies, they just ape different stuff.

I don't read light novels, but as far as light novel anime adaptations go, I think they are unfairly stereotyped as generally bad. Sure, some of these have stereotyped plots. But some are interesting, and at least the animation production has to come up with designs, which can be much lazier in manga adaptations.

[up] Light Novels do have illustrations every few page or so. Theres also the cover illustrations of the characters so the designs for anime versions arent from whole cloth

I mean, he's not wrong about NGNL.

I'm not sure on the exact context but I would assume it's something about classification or censorship.

What did he say about Goblin Slayer? I mean, it 100% sexualised a rape scene in every version other than the LN, which treated it far more soberly.

That apparently in the series, children enjoyed being raped.

The Twitter thread actually shows him saying that.

no children are raped in the series and they sure as hell don't enjoy it, his "experts" ate in crack and should work on handling real pedos rather than using anime to divert attention

Huh there’s this statistics poll thing about the most satisfying anime of 2019.

https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2020/02/26-1/anime-marketing-white-paper-2020-the-most-satisfying-series-in-2019-was-demon-slayer

Demon Slayer won with a 48.9% satisfaction rate apparently.

[up][up][up]I'm up to date with the manga, and there's nothing of that sort in Goblin Slayer. Rape is never enjoyed by its victims, and although it is undeniably sexualised in the manga and anime versions, there are zero children raped either. The closest you could get to is that High Elf Archer has a petite figure and she has a close call at one point where it gets a bit gropey, but her companions come to her aid before it can go too far.

Unless by children he means the beginner adventurers at the very start of the series, who probably are of age by the setting's reckoning but underage by ours, but that's still young people of enough agency and maturity to go off adventuring as official adventurers which is a far cry from the implied unambiguous child rape you mentioned him going on about.

Like, the only stone unturned as far as my knowledge goes is that the Light Novel is further along still of course, but that is by all accounts less sexualised than the visual media versions.
