Or any other manga/ anime that reeks of awesome? I'm aware of Berserk, but it frustrates me to no end that it'll probably take another decade for that series to be done.

Any Classics? Cult Classics? Obscure titles? Guilty Pleasures? Gory or Porny as hell?

Ultra machismo is really, really not my thing, but I'm familiar with a few titles that might fit your specified criteria:

  • Golgo13
  • Hokuto No Ken (Fist Of The North Star)
  • Crying Freeman (actually, this was pretty good. Well, first couple of volumes, anyway.)
  • Bastard! (cheesy, eighties heavy metal inspired sword 'n' sorcery. It's essentially Manowar: The Manga).
  • Cobra
  • Goku Midnight Eye (also by Terasawa Buichi).

EDIT: How could I have left out Black Lagoon? It's deeply, deeply, silly but supremely entertaining. And most of the principal Badasses are women, which leavens the Testosterone Poisoning.

Battle Angel Alita is truly one of the best seinen mangas and I will accept nothing said otherwise!

Reek of awesome? Are we talking stacked CMOAs or just good writing? Because the Ghost In The Shell graphic novel drips of pure awesome writing, but the action scenes are controlled and rarely epic.

I'd recommend Fate Stay Night, Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Saki (if you're not averse to all the Les Yay subtext and Moe Moe), Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, and any of the Key Visual Arts adaptations (Air, Kanon, Clannad)

Fate, Higurashi, and Umineko are full of awesome. Saki is full of Moe, and the Key works are loaded with Crowning Moments Of Heartwarming and TearJerkers.

You're gonna recommend moe shows? Kanon, for chrissake?? Look at the OP:

Admittedly they're Moe, but take a look at their respective trope pages. They're stuffed to the brim with Crowning Moments of Heartwarming and Tear Jerkers.

While it may not be what the thread starter is looking for, the Seinen page actually lists them down as Seinen, and the intricate, if not wholly realistic, plotlines are targeted at older audiences.

Well, ok, but they're still pretty good shows nonetheless.

Never hurts to see if you're amenable to stuff you don't think you'd normally watch.

You can't subsist on Badass alone.

Ninja'd.

Ah, that? That is an ironic forum injoke, referring to this.

Right, I see.

But on the subject of seinen:

It's not as narrow a delineation as some might think. It doesn't have to be saturated with visceral violence or lurid subject matter to appeal to a mature audience. Most Moe shows are in fact targeted specifically at the older demographic, considering the origins of many such titles. Not that they might be what the OP is after, but the term "seinen" can be a little misleading sometimes.

"Something that reeks of awesome" applies to far more shounen title than seinen ones.

Pluto, much? Remember - Naoki Urasawa cannot write a bad story. He's like Neil Gaiman, without the PhD in literature.

Oh, and can't forget Twentieth Century Boys

(Also, Urasawa totally does have a PhD — It's a PhD in awesome. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.)

While we're on the subject of doctorates and badassery, Black Jack must be mentioned. It is delicious, awesome WTFery in its truest form.

I'm pretty sure Black Jack is Shōnen, or at least plays a lot like one... it's still very awesome and recommendable.

It was written for adults. The WTFery is just Tezuka being Tezuka.

I said it more in the sense of the lightheartedness, and idealistic tone, but I can see your point.

You know, seinen is a demographic, not a genre. It includes a pretty wide variety of things. With the only other qualifier being "awesome as hell" it's kind of hard to tell what you're interested in.
