How was being beaten by a guy who had two and likely more Legendaries or a guy who had beaten the main protagonist twice "not that bad"?

Having a legendary is cheap, but yeah that's gonna take you the league.

Alain was frustrating (he lost to a rival he'd never beaten when he had a type advantage), but there may have been precedent due to him losing before. It's still frustrating, but that happens.

Cameron....I ain't even seen him, but literally everything about him is bullshit. They went too far making him a dumbass so his victory seems so contrived that it comes out as massively unfair.

Edit: To be more precise, those two felt built up, while Cameron does not.

Greninja didn't have advantage over Charizard X, not that it mattered since it felt like Charizard was no selling everything anyway.

Well, I think this is the first time I’ve seen that people are rooting AGAINST Ash. Someone I saw on Reddit said he HOPES Ash is going to lose.

Well, it seems as if the sleeping fakeout is what really has the fans up in arms. Now, everyone, do you think this backlash is worse than the lying at the Kalos League or not?

Edit: And now people are getting mad at Rowlet for causing this whole fakeout in the process. They’re actually waiting for the moment when Ash dumps it like the rest of his Pokémon in joy.

[up] Because people somehow got impressed by an Ass Pull, which this show has been doing since Kanto shamelessly.

DID they lie about Kalos though? The Japanese title is "Kalos League Victory! Satoshi's Ultimate Match!!" Misleading MAYBE, but no lie that I see.

Well, ACW, in my opinion it was all a lie, though people might disagree. The marketing and show itself hyped the victory up and then the exact opposite happened, which I feel is inexcusably lying.

[up][up][up]This wasn't an Ass Pull though. People aren't upset about Rowlet winning or how he won, that was a Foregone Conclusion. What has people upset is the fakeout

It's mainly Hau/Decidueye fans that are upset.

[up] Another thing that pissed fans off was the referee who reversed the decision was Hau’s own grandfather. That’s (pun not intended) bush league levels of writing right there.

[up]Basically, yeah. People mainly just felt that the writers were needlessly cruel to Hau.

[up]x6: Just to say, we're about 6-8 weeks away from that title becoming a lie.

And, yeah, just because Ash got shafted in Kanto doesn't make shafting Hau here right. But don't say that all fans are up in arms when only Hau fans (justifiably) are.

Okay, I agree the writers didn't handle Hau with enough care pre League (really we should've set him up in season 2), though I still care about him. I mean, for his first league as a newbie trainer, getting top 8 ain't bad and he beat the principal of a Pokemon school.

The battle itself...Ash's Rowlet has had more experience and it blocked more hits than it did take. Decidueye loses its flying type to ghost so its weak against flying which explains Brave Bird.

Now what's Meltan up too...

[up] I saw someone speculating on Bulbapedia that it might be trying to gather the rest of it’s gang together to merge and evolve. Also, the writer of this particular episode is good at slice of life episodes, but not battle episodes. Say what you will about the one who wrote the Kalos Finals two parter, but this one clearly didn’t know what he was doing.

Edit: I’m willing to bet someone here considers this a Dethroning Moment of Suck.

The problem was the scoreboard showed Ash's pic faded out and Hau was declared the winner. In previous leagues sometimes the judge would be about to declare the opponent the winner but then Ash's pokemon miraculously stands up in the last moment so the judge stops, and that's understandable. Here on the other hand the whole verdict went through, Hau got declared the winner, Ash's pic on the league scoreboard was faded out, and Hau was celebrating.

It was a terrible writing decision and now makes Ash's advancement in this league seem cheap and not earned. If Ash really does go on to win the entire Alola league, most people will just not count it even more because of this episode.

...so now they've made it so that even if Ash wins, it'll be tainted.

[up][up]That might be a blessing in disguise, Rob. With no leagues, we don’t have to worry about that unrealizable goal anymore.

Also, this reminds me so much of the Cleaveland Browns/Jacksonville Jaguars game Bottlegate. The Browns came close to winning, but the referees did a really stupid thing and the fans were this pissed off!

Yes, but this was probably intended as the one that this crop of writers could point to and say "All right, there! He won one! Shut up, okay?"

Except that they already failed there by having this be a Battle Royale followed by a Junior Cup. And now they cashed in what little credibility this league had left to put in a Discontinuity Nod to Ash's first League and/or an Author Tract either about Replay Review itself or its necessity.

And, going by rumors, the next game pair will be heavily sports-oriented... *Head Desk*

Getting rid of Leagues after this one would be a terrible idea. If Ash looses that'd piss off people because then he'd have never won a "canon" League from the games even though he did win the Orange Islands. If he wins well there's the argument that it doesn't count because it wasn't built up to/Ash didn't earn it because it's not a "real" League/Hau should have won their battle. Sure the anime doesn't cater to longtime fans so they don't have to care but getting rid of Leagues after this one would not go over well unless they replaced Ash after this. But while a lot of people might be happy with that, replacing Ash probably wouldn't go over well either. Essentially they have to keep Leagues until Ash wins Galar or any of the Leagues that follow it if they don't want to deal with backlash from getting rid of them.
