Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Recently watched one Fan Film based on 2000AD property, so decided to discuss it

What is the Work?

Search/Destroy is a 20 minute Fan Film based on Strontium Dog comics, that follows two mutant bounty hunters Johnny Alpha and Wulf, as they investigate the dissaperance and deaths of several mutant bounty hunters on Dacre's World. The Fan Film is surprisingly competently made for its genre of nonprofit fan product and can be watched freely on YouTube here:

My candidate is the true main antagonist of the movie - The Colonel.

Who is The Colonel?

A petty and sadistic military commander on Dacre's World, who has a really strong hatred for mutants, The Colonel decided to secretly hire four bounty hunters to hunt down and murder any mutant bounty hunter they see, resulting in the deaths of several mutants and Alpha and Wulf taking a job from Search/Destroy company to investigate this. As both bounty hunters track down and kill the group of mercenaries, who killed mutants on The Colonel's demands and get the information about where The Colonel is and attack his base, slaughtering his soldiers and seeing the cage with Colonel's personal pet Chukwalla monster, whom he feeds people (dead or alive), as evident by the fact that Chukwalla's cage filled with human bones, only to be caught by two of his stone creatures, with Wulf ending up dying taking down one of them (at least it seems that way). The Colonel has Alpha dragged down to him and explained his motivation in the speech at 14:20 time mark of the movie, openly declaring mutants like Alpha scum, who always lose to "decent normal people" and how he hates that some "muties" can go to his planet, which he proudly declared his family build over generations, and dare to tell him what he can and can't do, before he openly says that he's going to throw him in Chukwalla's cage to be eaten alive by that monster. This leads Aplha, who recorded The Colonel's speech, to use his time bomb to transport himself and The Colonel back in time to Chukwalla's cage, before Wulf was killed, leading to The Colonel being devoured by Chukwalla, before Wulf arrived and killed Chukwalla, as the creature attempted to eat Alpha as well.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

None, he only mentioned his family as the one, who build Dacre's colonies, as a framework to showcase that he thinks he should be in charge of them and do whatever he wants.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

For a 20 minute Fan Film that is disconnected from everything else, i think The Colonel passes (especially since he's only appeared and revealed to be behind everything in the second half of the movie), with ordering the deaths of several mutant bounty hunters and feeding people (sometimes alive) to his Chukwalla's monster, all because of his extremely petty Fantastic Racism.

Final Verdict?

What do you think?

Abstain on the Governor, [tup] the Colonel

And I'm sorry, I'm a little confused as to what's been discussed.. Are we not allowing works from tropers here anymore, or was there another All The Rest situation?

Read "Ghost Stories of Remnant" here.

Basically no stories where the intention of the author is to have a CM.

no, that's not it. We're just strongly encouraging people not to write a story with the sole purpose of a CM

Yea to Colonel

7 is the minimum if their in one tree. We usually do like 10 if we're talking franchise.

[tup] The Strangler, Heyrich and the Colonel.

As for The Governor, I'll abstain until I know for sure the prequel book isn't canon, and if I recall correctly it was mentioned he cared about a subordinate. I'm only abstaining since I'm not as familiar with the show or comics as I am the games.

Okay, so...the scene with Bruce? I just checked from Google. When Bruce is dying the Governor says "Bruce?" Then shouts "BRUCE!" Before shutting his eyes tight. He's clearly upset to a degree here, but it's hard to say whether it's real care. He does put a bulet in him to keep him from reanimating after and that's it, but...

Yeah, I'm gonna err on the safe side and give The Governor a "no" then. While I know nothing of the work and I suppose it's possible that's not real care, that's a bit much for me to give an upvote.

Honestly the argument to get him back on, while it had merit, seems a little hasty in excitement for the Gov and I'd like some more substantive points before we really relitigate him. Loathsome prick but I'm not seeing any version of him totally expunged of redemptive features.

The Governor and his men were setting up camp where Bruce died, so it's perfectly reasonable to assume they just didn't wanna risk being bitten by a walker. And he does seem kind of upset, but he gets over it rather quickly. What makes you think he's not just upset over losing his best soldier?

"It's an Ego case" is something you wanna be careful about using as a defence... it's a very specific circumstance—in spite of that, people try to bring it up all the time—but Guardians made the direct point that his "love" for Meredith wavered in the face of his self-designated purpose and he'll throw aside family in the name of his selfish quest, further cemented by the countless dead children of his we see. What does the Governor do to imply he does not care for Bruce? As it stands, this is conjecture and we've cut characters for less.
