Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Hmm, so what say everyone: DC and DC Video Games, or just DC? I'll let everyone decide.

Please add to the Drafts either way.

Why is DC continuity so much more a mess than Marvel? Marvel just has 616, others, and a few that move from others to 616 (Mar-Vell of the Cancer-Verse; Ultimate Reed).

Also, here's the image of possible future, where Skeletor and Mumm-Ra won from He-Man/Thundercats #4.

And a possible quote from Skeletor of 2012 He-Man comics:

Hear me Goddess. The End is coming, and there is no going back. You choose me to bring this moment about, but I am not your servant... I am your murderer. Soon, all your children will be at the gates of this fortress, Goddess, and they will cry for me to spare them. And I will tell them what I tell you now... No. If I cannot rule this universe, I will slay it. Bow before me.

You know, I'll do both. Hell, I could probably JUST do it in games, if not for the first series.

@Birdy18

Yeah, even disregarding how not knowing much about the Phantom Ruby doesn't correlate to Infinite's placement as there's no indication it corrupts the user, there's something you're forgetting. Infinite's Phantom Ruby was just a copy made by Eggman. It wasn't the original one. So it holds even less relevance

And games such as Sonic Lost World and Sonic Generations, before he got the Phantom Ruby, have had Eggman try to destroy the world before, not merely rule it. Again, nothing indicating that the Ruby corrupts the user.

@ACW, I mean that during the time I joined the thread, at least three new contenders have been named Max. I'm not talking about older candidates like Zorin, Capricorn or Cady.

If i may, can i offer to delete last chunk of unnecessary text from The Great Fusilli writeup.

Basically to change it from this:

Courage the Cowardly Dog: The Great Fusilli, from the eponymous season 1 episode, is a traveling stage magician who lured people onto his stage under the guise of making them famous actors. He would then have them perform for an imaginary audience, in order to use enchanted puppet strings to convert them into lifeless puppets, which he would then play with for his own amusement. Once Courage finds a room filled with the dozens of people he's converted into marionettes, Fusilli turns his owners Muriel and Eustace into puppets while at the same time attempting to dispose of Courage. Although Negative Continuity undoes the effect of Muriel and Eustace's murder, the ending of the episode leaves disturbing implications. Though comparatively minor compared to more major villains of the show, Fusilli was on par with even Katz, and his one appearance in the show proved to be one of the most disturbing episodes of the show's run.

To this:

Having (regrettably) played Sonic Forces, yeah. Infinite's going nowhere. Him not having enough backstory is the game's fault. We can't do anything about that but assess the information we've been given. And as it stands, Infinite is just a guy who desired to destroy everything around him and cause pain and turmoil all around to prove he wasn't weak. Whatever redeeming qualities he may or may not have had, he got rid of.

This is what happens when you make a character like Infinite and you throw his ass in a fanbase as divisive as Sonic the Hedgehog. just bugs me

Infinite is not corrupted by the Phantom Ruby. The avatar uses the gem without turning evil. Alternative Character Interpretation is irrelevant.

Birdy, I have to ask is this another villains wiki thing?

Cause I actually went there, and one person honestly downvoted Susie there cause they felt Joey Brainwashed Susie into being evil, Wich isn't so much as vaguely implied and is even contradicted by canon. That, compared to all the reasons you suggested cutting Susie being...Misinterpreting the game at best. Seems to give Me thw vibe that Villains wiki just kind of allows Speculation To Affect debates. We don't do that here.

We did. Its Just Birdys reasons Alone were Almost Humoursly wrong. The strong debate was about her Sanity(Something I still feel Strongly about as other charachters who are mentally Unwell lack her Petty sadism, And the whole "She thinks she's a cartoon character" thing simply isn't true cause she herself shows she knows full well she's actually Susie Campbell. but I digress) not any of the Stuff Birdy mentioned.

There are several writeups thst are structured like Fusilli's. Plus I think pointing out that the episode ends with Muriel and Eustache's condition not being reversed with Courage pretty much suffering Sanity Slippage from it is kind of important.

Is it really necessary to make changes to the original writeup? It reads just fine, and I see no reason for changing it aside from personal distaste.

How's this for a compromise?

  • The Great Fusilli, from the episode of the same name, is a traveling stage magician who lured people onto his stage under the guise of making them famous actors. He would then have them perform for an imaginary audience, in order to use enchanted puppet strings to convert them into lifeless puppets, which he would then play with for his own amusement. Once Courage finds a room filled with the dozens of people he's converted into marionettes, Fusilli turns his owners Muriel and Eustace into puppets—an act not reversed by the end of the episode, causing Courage to suffer Sanity Slippage—while at the same time attempting to dispose of Courage.
