Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Tou, Lehman and Melona. Now, my next candidate, this time from Kamen Rider Kuuga.

What is the setting? Yusuke Godai is the epitome of Nice Guy, he is good-hearted, honest, and most of all, the possible reincarnation of a nature-loving hero from the past. When a sarcophagus is opened and the Gurongi, an ancient race of battle-obsessed creatures, are released from their graves by the Big Bad Daguva, it is up to Godai to become Kamen Rider Kuuga and put these monsters back where they belong. The Gurongi's main goal is to win the Gegeru, a game where each one of them have to kill a certain number of humans in a limited amount of time. Most of them see this game as a duty, while others take sadistic pleasure in causing pain, some examples are Jaraji; a youth targeting schoolboys, and Daguva himself, a Blood Knight who is not above killing members of his own race. One of these Gurongi is our candidate for today, Jaaza.

Who is Jaaza? Go-Jaaza-Gi, the Shark Gurongi, is a Smug Snake who assumes the identity of a smiling, well-dressed woman. Jaaza belongs to the Gebageru subclass, a trio of Gurongi who modified their own bodies to achieve power equivalent to that of Kuuga's. Despite her abilities, Jaaza hates to engage in direct confrontations with her enemies, and prefers to fight when they are off-guard. A Dirty Coward to the extreme, Jaaza choose defenseless people to be her victims. Jaaza's goal is to kill 567 people within five hours, one of the highest number of intended victims in the Gegeru, gleefully blogging on the internet to annouce the disasters that are about to come; One of her compatriots even noticed that she was a bit too happy about committing a mass murder. Jaaza infiltrated a plane and slaughtered the 243 people inside, most of which were elderly passengers, Jaaza then forced the pilot to send a distrell call to the police, before killing him to make the plane crash. Arriving at Tokyo and noticing Kuuga's presence, Jaaza hid underwater and impaled Kuuga's shoulder with a harpoon. Jaaza then targeted a cruise which had 327 on-board, mostly children; when her brave Gebageru compatriots saw the cruise and asked if it was her next hunting ground, Jaaza smiled and told them that it was picked by her solely because the victims would be "too easy to kill". Before Jaaza could murder the children, she was stopped and killed by Kuuga.

Mitigating Factors? As a member of the Go-class, Jaaza doesn't have the excuse of not being able to choose her targets, she is a murderous high-functioning psychopath that has no respect even for her own culture. Jaaza also has the honor of being the Gurongi with the highest number of confirmed victims.

Conclusion? You decide.

Yes to Melona and Jaaza... who it sounds like the writers were trying pretty hard to get people to say, "Wow, she bad!"

Also, my boy Elfen asked me to take a stab at rewriting his entry for Treesea, so here's my take on her:

  • Yumekui Merry: The anime-exclusive character, Mystleteinn/Mistleteinn/Mistilteinn Treesea is a vicious Dream Demon who tortures and eats others of her kind. Joining forces with Ryota Ijima, the duo plan to ruin the dreams of others, Treesea happily implanting Dream Demons on innocent students, resulting in them becoming utterly emotionless and apathetic towards the future of their own lives. Confronted by Merry in Isana's dream, Treesea taunts her and tries to kill her own Dream Demon she attached to Isana to harvest her. In her final confrontation with the heroes, Treesea imprisons Merry in to drown her in her own sorrow and mocks the sacrifice performed by two heroes as "fruitless".

This season like the rest of the Heissi era (2000 - 2008) is in its own universe. It's only from after 2009 did they start taking place in direct contiuition from the last and the current one also takes place in its on universe. So no worries there.

Not very common, most Gurongi manage to kill dozens of people, but rarely hundreds. The only other CM with a triple-digit bodycount is Daguva, and even then, his number of confirmed victims is inferior to that of Jaaza's.

[tup]Molena and Jaaza.

Anyways, effort-post ahoy!

What's The Work?

Dust City is an Urban Fantasy novel by Robert Paul Weston set in the titular metropolis where humans live alongside evolved animals and other fairy-tale creatures. The story centers on Henry Whelp, the son of the Big Bad Wolf, a convict doing time for the brutal murder of Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother.

Now, Dust City is known for its fairy dust, which used to come from real fairies before they mysteriously vanished when Henry was a cub. Now, leftover dust is mined by companies or sold on the black market, but it's nowhere near as potent as the "old-time" magic. During the novel's events, Henry goes on an investigation behind the fairies' disappearance, and uncovers a conspiracy that threatens all the animalia in Dust City.

Who Are They?

The Nimbus brothers, Karl and Ludwig, are the CE Os of Nimbus Thaumaturgical, the originators of fairydust processing, who provide the city with its closest available products to old-time magic. What is unknown to much of the city's populace, however, is the secret behind the company's success: before the events of the novel, the Nimbus brothers came to the conclusion that if they were the only purveyors of magic — even a lesser, medicinal brand of magic — they'd corner the market. Thus, as a "sound business decision", the brothers hired the nixies — a species of Fish People — and had them go up to Eden, where the fairies lived, and slaughter all of them. This allowed the Nimbus Thaumaturgical to move up to Eden, mine its leftover dust, and sell them off to the rest of the city.

However, the Nimbus brothers failed to realize that, with the fairies dead, their dust would eventually run out. Thus, the brothers resorted to digging up the corpses of the thousands of dead fairies, which by then had grown into deadwood trees, and attempt to refine them into a new brand of fairydust. They tested this out on multitudes of animalia subjects, with the results always turning out wrong — the animals would be devolved back into their primitive stage, or mutated into grotesque monstrosities. Thus, with their supply of fairydust limited, the Nimbus brothers opted for a new plan: teaming up with crime boss Skinner and the nixies, the brothers schemed to produce a dust potent enough to use in the city's water system, thus reverting the city's animalia population back to their primitive forms. This way, when the magic has run out, they'll have new economic principles to allow people like them to maintain a privileged position, while the animalia are to be used as their labor and food.

When Henry and his friend, Fiona, arrive in Eden and discover the fairy bodies, they are captured by the Nimbus brothers. As interrogation, the brothers torture Henry by using a pair of pliers tear out his claws, threatening to do the same to Fiona unless he cooperates. Having the pair caged, the brothers then turn on Skinner and dose him with one of their older blends of fairydust as punishment for allowing Henry to learn about their operation and jeopardizing their plans, causing the dwarf to literally rip himself in half. They then dose Henry with the dust to revert him back to his primitive stage and set him loose in the city, where he nearly kills an elf and her grandmother. However, he manages to regain control of his senses and throws himself out a window, knocking himself out.

After Henry is found by the police, they find a roll of film in his pocket, which exposes the Nimbus brothers' operations, causing the company to go under and the pair to be sent to prison. Unfortunately, while Henry's dose was temporary, there is no antidote for the other devolved animals, leaving them in that state permanently.

Mitigating factors?

No. The brothers are merely a pair of xenophobic, greedy pricks who look down on the animalia population as being inferior, wishing to return to "an idyllic time when mindless wolves such as yourselves were hunted for sport". They never show any care for one other either, simply acting like business partners. They pretty much set the heinous standard as well, with their extermination of the fairies and using countless animalia as test subjects for their experiments, planning to do the same to the whole population as well, along with their gruesome torture of Henry.

Overall, I'd say Keep. I plan on getting to Skinner in a bit as well.

Why so serious?

Yes to the Nimbus brothers.

Now, I messaged nombretomado about the fact a sixth pothole was added to Preacher!God's writeup which isn't helpful for several reasons, despite the fact this was not done on Preacher's YMMV page. I asked them to take down the sixth on the locked page but they told me they don't do changes according to PM requests and to post it here. ACW, I assume you're good for us axing this?

Alright, next candidate from Dust City.

Who Is He?

Skinner, this world's version of Rumpelstiltskin, is a malicious, malformed dwarf and the number one bagman for the nixies. He is a crime boss responsible for selling fairydust on the black market and running people off their property, primarily employing wolves for this, including Henry's father. He also has the ability to transform things — and people — into gold.

What Does He Do?

Prior to the events of the novel, Skinner had Henry's father under his employ. One day, Skinner sent Mr. Whelp to the estate of Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother, ostensibly to intimidate her into giving up her property. However, Skinner slipped Mr. Whelp a hit of fairydust, claiming it would calm his nerves; in reality, the dust temporarily reduced him to his primitive stage, causing him to brutally slaughter Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, which led to him being thrown in prison.

In the present, Skinner conspires with the Nimbus brothers and the nixies in their plot to reduce the animalia population back to their primitive stage, and helps them capture multiple animals for testing. When Doc, a wolf who works at St. Remus (the Home for Wayward Wolves that Henry stays at) begins to uncover their plan, Skinner murders him and frames it as a suicide. Shortly afterwards, Henry escapes St. Remus and volunteers to become a "dust runner" for the nixies. As initiation, Skinner has Henry and the other volunteer wolves run a race, dosing them all with the fairydust, reducing them to their bestial stages and causing them to brutalize each other. Henry manages to win the race, and Skinner takes him under his employ while having the other wolves disposed of at a gutter, leaving them for dead.

For the next few days, Henry and the other dust runners sell the fairydust to various clients until Henry meets up with Fiona (following an attack by a mutated animal) and they sneak into Skinner's underground refinery, uncovering all the devolved animals captured by Skinner and the nixies. However, Skinner captures them and forces Henry to do another job; in this case, forcing a group of goats to fork over their land. He also attempts to trick Henry into the taking the fairydust, no doubt wanting him to slaughter the family just as he did with his father, but Henry turns it down. Nevertheless, a confrontation between Henry and the goats ensues, and Henry is taken in by the authorities. However, he's busted out by Matt, an old friend of his father who also works for Skinner. Together, they sneak into Skinner's house and free Fiona — at the same time discovering a room containing all of Skinner's victims, frozen into solid golden statues.

Skinner catches them and turns Matt into a statue, but Henry and Fiona escape by toppling the statues onto Skinner, injuring his leg. Shortly afterwards, they also find Henry's friend Jack, and see that Skinner has turned half of his body into gold. Following their capture by the Nimbus brothers, Skinner meets up with them, only to meet his end when the Nimbus brothers dose him with the fairydust, causing him to rip himself in two.

Mitigating factors?

He has no redeeming features. As for the heinous standard, he's largely complicit in the Nimbus' operations and shares much of their crimes, as well as being responsible for transforming countless humans and animalia alike into golden statues, effectively killing them, and other crimes such as his role in the death of Red Riding Hood and her grandmother, so I'd say he passes.

Why so serious?
