Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Hmm... I'm willing to go on good faith that the possibility is left open and unless a later book makes a definitively compromising argument towards the predators' agency, I'll give your candidate a yes.

Also, I really don't like the entry for the 1989 Batman film's Joker, which, along with a slew of awkwardly written sentences, compares him to the Joker from The Dark Knight, which is just odd, here's my new version:

  • Batman: The Joker, real name Jack Napier, is an insane, sadistic criminal. Murdering the young Bruce Wayne's parents, Jack is only stopped from killing the boy himself when his partner warns him the cops are approaching. After being transformed into the Joker, Jack goes on to kill the mob boss who betrayed him, before killing the other Mafia higher ups to take over the Gotham Crime Syndicate. Using Smylex mixed in with everyday products, Jack causes a string of deaths of unsuspecting innocents. Jack also abuses his girlfriend, Alicia Hunt, disfiguring and eventually killing her, before trying to seduce Vicki Vale immediately after her death. Taking advantage of Gotham's 200th anniversary parade, Jack tries to gas the gathered civilians with Smylex to amuse himself and takes out his frustration over Batman stopping his plans by killing his loyal second-in-command.

This is question important for my EP.

Big Bad had, offscreen, ordered Brute to kill someone. Killing is onscreen. Is ordering a murder Offscreen Villainy?

[up] I'd say it's not. A CM I proposed a couple weeks ago, James Halgate, is a Non-Action Big Bad who orders most of his murders offscreen, but the deaths are onscreen. I'd say as long as we see the effects of his offscreen actions, it's not Offscreen Villainy.

A question from mine:

So there is a candidate in question......Despite he had a bit of a troubled relationship with his mother, He tries at his best to impress her. However, heres the thing: In the candidate in question's mother POV, she said that the candidate in question died 3 years ago and she said that he swam to the ocean and never came back and he also said sorry to his mother and wont gonna hurt her and he also told his mother that his life was an epic fail. However, heres the real thing that happen: So the candidate in question went to New York 3 years ago and then assumes a new identity, seducing the female protagonist and then tries to overtake the company.......And I think he tries to lie to his mother about what happened and when the Candidate in question encounters the female protagonist..... She simply calls him out on what he had done to his mother by leaving her alone. And refutes it by saying that its necessary.... So heres the thing. Do you think this is mitigating or not?

And yes, The candidate in question is from A Kiss Before Dying btw

Yes to Morbin.

So anyway, Yesterday Tyk and I decided to collaborate on the r/nosleep entries and decide who stays and who goes. He'll be posting his batch sometime later today, but for now? Let's look at the guys I decided to cover:

The Stranger from The Day I Lost my Faith: As far as I'm concerned? Cut him and don't look back. His story is literally nothing more than "cartoonishly evil edgelord brutally murders people in shocking, tasteless ways for funsies and swears a bunch while doing so".

Seamus Pommier from Welcome to Halloween Camp: While he's not as bad of a case as the Stranger, he should be cut for similar reasons.

Stitch from Case File no. 65: I... honestly think that this guy ought to stay. His story is every bit as ludicrously gory as the others and there isn't a particularly happy ending... but unlike the other two stories I discussed, it comes off less like a bored teen spent an hour penning up a shock fic and more like something with a lot of care and effort put into it: it's a multi-partart story that actually had a few ARG elements incorporated where the audience interacts with the narrator and contribute to his fight against Stitch.

Again, it is not well-written and very narmy, but the characters are properly fleshed out and (aside from Stitch) sympathetic, and while all the heroes are either dead or about to die at the end, it's shown that the author's death may very well screw over the villain in the long run. Effort was put into this story, and it ultimately comes across as a horror thriller that happens to be dark and gory as opposed to just mindless drivel. I dunno: maybe you guys will think differently, but that's just my two cents on the subject.

@Kazuya: No. What we should be doing is analyzing whether or not short stories are actually well-written pieces of fiction that actually have a purpose to them, or if they're just Torture Porn for the sake of Gorn. A Serbian Film and The Human Centipede trilogy were feature films released in theaters, and despite this, we cut them because there was virtually no point to these movies except for "how can we gross out our audience without going to prison?" And then there is Where the Dead Go to Die, which, while not being the worst movie I've seen, is shameless shock value mixed in with Surreal Horror. And nothing else.

Anyway.....finished reading I had to psychologically evaluate a serial killer; I don't know what to report. That is still a stupid-ass title. >__>

We're not cutting Howard. The story's split into four parts, amounting to being roughly 15K words. The entire story—and I do mean the whole thing—is nothing but a psychiatrist interrogating a murderer with six different personalities. We learn through this interrogation about Howard's deeds, which are currently listed on the Web Original subpage. If that wasn't enough, the psychiatrist also confirms with the police and watches a few VHS tapes confirming Howard's crimes, so no Offstage Villainy here.

Overall, no excessive Gorn, no onscreen Torture Porn, and no senseless shock value. I will admit, the story is a bit absurd and over-the-top with its plot, but I do give the author props to committing to the plot's absurdity and just rolling with it. I can't even say that the story's poorly-written, if I'm being honest.

I'll be reading Three Years In Hell and Dr. Margin's Guide to New Monsters later tonight. And I Was a Professional Internet Troll, because something doesn't sit right with me and that story. >__>

@Fried @Tyk I could make a tally for the guys who could stay or go if you guys don't mind. Here's the current tally in which the one should go and stay:

  • Keep: Kristen Cullen (I guess?),Stitch and Howard
  • Cut: The Stranger,Seamus

EP from me probably coming soon unless I could settle something about one factor that just bugs me me ( Given I want to compensate it for my lackluster Urs EP and it was a BIG MISTAKE!!!).......Also, late [tup] to that Joker rewrite.

EDIT POST / NEW POST: So I went ahead and read I Was a Professional Internet Troll! .....Ehhhhhh, I'm leaning towards cut. This starts out as a legitimate story, talking about Resisilobus and why he became a horrible Internet Troll. But shortly after that, it devolves into a series of events where Resisilobus says "Ooh, I did this! OOH! I did this! OOH! I DID THHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSS!" And the story ends with a demon known as the real Resisilobus stalking him and possibly killing him off-screen.

Now....there's no gratuitous Torture Porn. There's no over-the-top Gorn. It's not senseless shock value. I will admit that; that's only fair. But really.....there's hardly anything to this story. The Villain Protagonist is just describing, in a short story hardly over 2700 words, that he ruined the lives of several innocent people because he thought it was funny or because it gave him pride. Then the story ends with him gloating about it.

Soooooooooooo yeah......I'm in the middle here. This technically is a story, but there's not much to it. If you guys wanna keep him, then that's fine. If you wanna cut him, that's fine too.

Now that Tyk mentioned A Serbian Film.

From wikipedia

Spasojević and Radivojević, have stated that the film is a parody of modern politically correct films made in Serbia, which are financially supported by foreign funds. When asked why they chose the title 'Srpski Film' for the film's name, Radivojević answered, "We have become synonyms for chaos and lunacy. The title is a cynical reference to that image. Srpski Film is also a metaphor for our national cinema — boring, predictable and altogether unintentionally hilarious which throughout our film to some extent is commented on and subtly parodied." Similarly, Radivojević describes Serbian cinema as "...pathetic state financed films made by people who have no sense or connection to film, but are strongly supported by foreign funds. Quality of the film is not their concern, only the bureaucratic upholding of the rule book on political correctness."[4]

According to Spasojević, the character of Vukmir is "an exaggerated representation of the new European film order ... In Eastern Europe, you cannot get your film financed unless you have a barefoot girl who cries on the streets, or some story about war victims in our region ... the Western world has lost feelings, so they're searching for false ones, they want to buy feelings."[5]

In another interview Spasojević is quoted as saying the film "denounces the fascism of political correctness." Questioned by the Croatian media on whether the violence depicted deals with crimes committed by Serbian soldiers during the Yugoslav Wars, Spasojević answered, "'Srpski Film' does not touch upon war themes, but in a metaphorical way deals with the consequences of postwar society and a man that is exploited to the extreme in the name of securing the survival of his family."[6]

And when are you going to stop pestering us with irrelevancies and pointless questions? At this point, Hegel, I have to ask what exactly you're contributing to this thread. You don't post candidates, you barely vote, you continuously ask us endless inane questions that we've made clear we don't like and you seem to have no interest in actually helping with this trope.
