Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alrighty... from Sláine...the first of three. I brign you the first Big Bad... the Lord Weird, Slough Feg, high priest of Crom-Cruach, the worm that devours all things.

That picture I posted on the last page? That's him.

Who Is He?

The lord of the dark Drunes of Ireland, Slough Feg was chosen to be the incarnation of the Horned God Carnun. Now, the horned God in human flesh is supposed to reign for seven years before passing the title and their life...but Feg refused to die. Instead, he ate the eggs of the Worm God to prolong his life...and he has been alive and undying for 20,000 years since, his body long since having decayed and rotted. Slough Feg is also a servant of the Cythrons, dark forces of the realm of Cythrawl, that are the Bigger Bad to even Crom Cruach.

Slough Feg, as a young man, believed in the spirits of all things, and that animals' souls were not offended being killed for food as long as proper reverence was offered. Since then, his beliefs have mutated as he has crafted a death cult to justify slaughtering humans. As the lord of the Drunes, he manipulates wars to create mass slaughter to feed the dark gods he worships. He views humanity now as a crop to be harvested...but Slough Feg plans on a full Ragnarok. The destruction of 'The Young world'...

What's He Done?

Our first introduction to the Lord Weird are his forces regularly taking children from their homes as tribute. Slough Feg has promised that if a certain amount are sacrificed to him, he will guarantee the people more food...his guards make note of the Loophole Abuse as there is more food...with fewer mouths to feed. Slough Feg takes an interest in a fearless girl named Medb and decides to train her as a Druness...the other children quickly remark they want to join as well, before Slough Feg comments "I'm sure you would, but we can't all be so lucky, can we?" Before presumably devouring them.

In the meantime, Slough Feg raises her as a talented priestess with the purpose of sacrificing her, for which he constructs a gigantic Wicker Man, filling it with captives and unlucky peasants to be burned alive...Slaine, our hero, is thrown in as well and manages to escape. Slough Feg sends his right hand man, Slough Throt after them, before Throt finds out about boss's 'end the world' plan and betrays Slough Feg. Feg gets revenge by using sorcery to invoke Crom Cruach's wrath, Throt devoured from within by writhing white worms. In another instance, when the good guys from Cythrawl are fighting the darker worshipers, Feg abducts the leader, Myrddin's, right hand man and tortures him, even removing a part of his brain. When the guy won't betray Myrddin, Slough Feg kills him and disguises him as said man to sabotage the defenses.

In the story The Horned God, we see a glimpse to Feg's utter madness, with the huge amount of death and destruction he's wrought. He forms an alliance with the Fomorians and unleashes them on Ireland to rape, kill and pillage as they go, led by their king Balor. He attempts to summon his god to basically end the world in fire and blood, with the souls of the living sent to the dark ones of Cythrawl. In the end, Slaine and Slough Feg fight and Slaine wins, finishing Slough Feg with a blow from the Gae Bolg...as he dies, the title of Horned God is passed to Slaine himself and Crom Cruach manifests to devour slough Feg.

Freudian excuse or other mitigating factors?

No. He feared death and made himself immortal. He craved power and joined the darkest forces imaginable. He relishes bloodshed and violence, and while he confesses he longs for death himself, he must remain to finish his work for "the land of the young to be swept away in a baptism of death!"

His relationship with Medb...Medb worships him, but Feg's care for her is...limited. He was fascinated by her, but raised her to be sacrificed (Which she's brainwashed into even wanting) and she does mourn his end, but Feg never expresses what can be described as love for her.

Refer to this: Eyes without life...sundered heads...piles of carcasses...these are pleasing words to me!" And when he's about to torture Slaine to death with his hook, he remarks "Cheerful, the work!"

Oh, and his wish for death is revealed to be less than sincere. When dying, he wishes he could have staved it off "another month...another week...another hour..."

Keeper. And two more villains from this series are a-coming.

It's what Crom Cruach does. Whether it's actually sentient is a matter of debate. Slough Feg served Crom Cruach, so at the end, he's devoured by him and his soul sent to feed the gods of Cythrawl.

I should fairly note Slaine is just a bit of an asshole on a good day. But Feg is a monster on another level. So are the next two.

Side note...should we cut Valentine Day from Literature now, given The Book that is not written appears to...not exist?

[tup] Slough Feg. He's not nearly as silly as you'd expect someone titled "Lord Weird" to be.

Oh, slaine's more a dick in a general sense. He's...not really a likable human being, but his atrocity count's pretty low.

[tup]Slough Feg. Also, I reiterate this image of Selene. The person she's attacking is clearly helpless and doesn't look like a superhero.

[tup] Slough Feg.

Little bit more info on possible CMs from TMNT.

Kraang Prime might not count, but only because she/he/it doesn't have much of a personality other than it wants to take over/rule the world. Kraang Sub-Prime seemed to have more character than the giant brain. I may have to rewatch the episodes Kraang Prime appears in.

Disregarding my biased opinions about him, Shredder doesn't count either. While what he did with Karai and everything regarding the Season 3 finale is ambiguous, he did show much concern over Tang Shen, and was horrified when he accidentally killed her. I just wish he wasn't so damn stupid in the Season 3 finale. I'm still debating on whether or not Shredder really intended for that to happen in the finale, or if that was the writers' fault and they did that for shock value. just bugs mejust bugs mejust bugs mejust bugs me

I'm not entirely sure if the Rat King counts anymore either. Overall, he mind-raped Splinter, he transformed a character (and another, immobile character we see for three seconds) into a mutant, and he tried to take over the city and attempted to experiment on a handful of civilians. And yes, while I will agree that that's pretty damn despicable, the Season 2 finale alone shows the Kraang fully succeeding in taking over the city, and April comments that millions of people have been turned into Kraang mutants. And later on in Season 3, the Kraang attempts to mutant the entire world halfway into the season.

Let's not get into the whole Shredder killed Splinter, thus dooming the world to getting sucked into a Black Hole bit...

I dunno. Does the Rat King still meet the heinous standard at this point?

Rat King has far fewer resources then the Kraang, which deserves consideration.

Also can a GDV have a plan that is as convoluted as Kraang Prime's plan?

I feel like sometimes people confuse a GDV with a villain with a stock personality. I don't think power mad villains are instantly GDV types, because power lust is a legitimate villain motive.

[up]Thank you. I was starting to wonder if anyone noticed it.

[up][up][up]Ditto on the GDV confusion. I've seen GDV's stated to be "comparable to a natural disaster", and I think that's where the confusion lies sometimes. Natural disasters cause destruction, so maybe some people think that a villain who wants to cause chaos and destruction is a GDV.

I don't oppose that image of Selene (though I'd kinda prefer one of a classic villain, like Apocalypse or Sinister). On her character page, it says she once teamed up with the New Mutants against Red Skull...Even Evil Has Standards?
