Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Quick now:

What's the work?

Barbarian is a 2022 film directed by Zach Cregger, his first film in years. and it's a surprising banger. Tess is heading into Detroit and books a stay at a very old rundown house, but the property is occupied by another guy named Keith who seems a bit odd...and a strange homeless man demands they leave...

MAJOR spoilers ahead:

The house, deep underground, is occupied by a powerful, deformed woman called "The Mother" who takes people to be her "children" and will brutally kill anyone or anything that intrudes...

The Mother cannot and does not count...there's some else though: her father, frank.

Who is Frank?

The original owner of the house. Frank is now an old man who is kept by the Mother, who fears to go near his own room. Frank is broken and barely conscious, in a living hell. As seen by a number of videotapes and flashback, Frank had a habit. In fact, frank liked to kidnap young women and rape them. Continuously. Which he'd film.

Dozens and dozens of victims, gone missing. Frank raped them, with their fates unknown, but clearly not good or positive. As a result of the rapes, some had children whom Frank would raise...

And then he'd rape his daughters, too, until they had children. The Mother is one such result of this. And as a result of incest and abuse, she's insane and violent. Tess is held captive by the Captive when another man named AJ arrives, and the two attempt to escape.

When they find Frank and his horrific mementos, AJ accidentally gives Frank access to a gun in the room and Frank takes a way out, shooting himself to escape.

Mitigating issues?

You think he has ANY good qualities? The only competition is the Mother (don't even bother), and AJ (who's implied to be guilty of having raped a co-star, hence being fired from a show).

Frank raped dozens of women continuously. He raped his own children, and given the lack of anyone around, they're all long dead. The guy is hands down a disgusting, vile monster.

Conclusion?

Keep.

One other today:

What's the work?

Gabriel (2007) is an Australian horror action film. I'd be remiss to not mention this stars Andy Whitfield, a terrific actor who left us FAR too early (FUCK cancer)....one of his only lead roles

A battle between heaven and hell stills into "Purgatory," a dingy, dark city with seven champions on either side: the Fallen and the "Arcs," or Arcangels. Gabriel is the final Arc and arrives at the near total victory of the Fallen. The surviving Arcs are hiding or enslaved and Michael, leader of the Arcs, faced Sammael, lord of the Fallen and did not return. Gabriel intends to complete his mission and swiftly defeats two Fallen, but the rest are soon after him. And one of them has a lot of nastiness to him.

Asmodeus.

Who is Asmodeus?

A wicked demon who aids their master Sammael in the fall of Purgatory so Hell might claim all the souls within, Asmodeus has a specific niche in the Fallen: he runs "The Funhouse," a brothel where the women are used by clients and many are implicitly forced in, on drugs. One such victim is Amitiel, one of the Arcs who faced Samael and lost. After Sammael made her his woman and grew bored of her, he gave her to Asmodeus, who cruelly pimps her out under the name of "Jade," with a gleeful cruelty to it.

Asmodeus is also a cruel narcissist and has a tendency to take an occasional prostitute as a personal slave, mutilating their faces with surgery until they resemble him to satisfy his narcissism. When Sammael interrupts to give him orders, Asmodeus just protests his latest being eliminated, stating she "wasn't done."

As Gabriel takes out several Fallen, Sammael orders Asmodeus to step up the game and the remaining Fallen begin eliminating the fallen Arcs. Asmodeus targets one who runs a homeless shelter by sending a bomb, killing his target and multiple innocents. Gabriel hunts Asmodeus to the Funhouse when he uses his latest slave who he's giving plastic surgery to as a shield. In the resulting fight, Gabriel ruins Asmodeus's face, to the Fallen's sheer fury, before Gabriel puts him down for good.

Mitigating issues?

Of the seven Fallen, Asmodeus is, hands down, the worst. Ahriman runs a drug scheme, Balan tries to rape Amitiel, Lilith is just Sammael's enforcer...but Sammael is easily the worst, a mass murderer who's behind everything...but it's revealed at the end, he's not Sammael. Michael won the fight and replaced him. Michael is so broken by heaven's games and the realization that he was sent in for nothing that he snapped and took on Sammael's personality, ending up using his last embers of life to save Gabriel's own and demonstrating a measure of regret for his deeds.

Asmodeus is a sex slaving mass murderer with a nightmarish niche among the Fallen and i is a gleeful monster at the best of times.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

  • Tokyo Shinobi Squad's Chapters 6-12: Hyoshi Nagumo, the "Icy Executioner", is the leader of the Seigan Squad and a former Shinobi with the power of ice. Preferring to kill young celebrities because of how emotional they are as they die, Nagumo prefers freezing his opponents to death, sometimes even chopping them down into shaved ice for him to consume. With over 63 kills, Nagumo introduces himself by killing two innocents gossiping about him, while unafraid to threaten or turn his men into shaved ice should they fail him. Tasked by Hanabel to bring her runway model Maki Mizuno, Nagumo kidnaps her and her manager Mizutani, sadistically attempting to kill Mizutani once his part of the deal’s complete.

After rewatching the series and looking at this one, I thought he might count.

What's the work?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) is a reboot of the TMNT franchise, where four, well, mutated turtles travel to the surface and make many allies and have to defend countless people from threats like this.

Who is the Newtralizer? What has he done?

Once known as K'Vathrak, he was a Salamandrian traitor who was known for com many crimes. He even ripped out the eye of his former partner G'Throkka and left him to die. He was captured by the Kraang later and taken to earth, where they experimented on him.   He was accidentally released by the turtles when they tried to free April's father and immediate rampaged across the Kraang's base, even killing one onscreen. Upon seeing the heroes, instead of teaming up with them to escape the Kraang, he tried to murder them too. Luckily, they escaped.

The Newtralizer later teamed up with Slash, and they escaped the Kraang base, planning to destroy as many of them as they could. The Newtralizer then saw that the Kraang were going to use some type of new weapon, so he planned to steal it from them and annihilate them, along with the entire city and everyone in it. Slash, being far less cruel, objected to this, but his partner didn't listen. He took control of the weapon and used it against the Kraang, as well as the turtles, who were actually trying to help  simply because he didn't need their assistance. He also nearly killed Slash with the weapon, all while taking enjoyment in the devastation he caused. Slash teamed up with the turtles and destroyed the machine, and seemingly the Newtralizer along with it....

But then it's revealed that he survived and got electric powers. With the Kraang gone at this point, the Newtralizer decided to target the closest thing to them: The Utrom. And unlike the Kraang, the Utrom are entirely benevolent. He invaded Dimension X and destroyed an entire group of Utrom before going to Earth to recharge his powers. The turtles and their allies confronted him and he tried to use his new powers on all of them, before being weakened by water being sprayed on him. He teleported away soon after, so they came up with another plan to capture him.

And....that plan didn't work either, with the Newtralizer resisting all of their attacks and nearly killing Bishop, one of the Utrom. The heroes then retreated to Dimension X to meet with the Utrom Council to make a new plan. The Newtralizer invaded once again, seemingly killing one member and attempting to massacre everyone else, forcing them to run away again. They then got a weapon that they could use against him, but in their battle, he channeled a huge amount of electricity and ended up temporarily destroying Michelangelo. Furious, the turtles nearly defeated him, but the arrival of Lord Dregg interfered. The Newtralizer revealed that he used to work for Dregg and went to see him. Dregg explained his  plan to eradicate Earth's population, something the Newtralizer gladly went along with, since it would kill all the Utroms on the planet. Although they had different ideas on how they wanted to destroy the planet, with Dregg wanting to painfully turn everyone into living incubators for his minions and Newtralizer just wanting to blow up the planet. However, they  just went with Dregg's plan.

Many of the heroes were captured, but luckily, Michelangelo was able to return with his own electric powers and confronted the Newtralizer. The two used their powers against each other, until Newtralizer was thrown into the core of the ship and overloaded it with his powers, causing it to explode and finally destroy him.

Mitigating Factors?

Alright, so, yes, he was against the Kraang and wanted to get rid of them. But that's not because of how big of a threat they were to the universe. He didn't care what happened to the other planets and was willing to sacrifice an entire city, while showing a total lack of empathy for the people in it. His motivation for destroying the Kraang was personal revenge and nothing else.

Him being imprisoned and experimented on the Kraang could have been an excuse...except he was already evil and sadistic before that. He was a criminal on his planet who ripped out the eye of his former partner and left him to die, even taunting him about that later. And none of what happened to him justified trying to destroy Earth or commit genocide on the Utroms.

Bishop said that the Kraang brainwashed the Newtralizer into becoming evil and wanting to annihilate the Utrom. But that was a very minor line and literally nothing ever confirmed, or even strongly implied that he was actually brainwashed. That line was just guessing what could have happened, or it was his attempt to reason with him. If he was brainwashed by the Kraang, then why did he plan to kill them all too? And again, he was already a horrible person even before he met the Kraang.

He did save Slash and treated him as a partner. But even if that was once a redeeming quality, he got rid of that when he nearly killed Slash with his weapon and layer intentionally tried to kill him, along with the turtles.

He was also never played for laughs anx had no redeeming qualities by the time of his last appearance. He was, as Dregg called him, "needlessly sadistic," and had no excuse for attempting to commit genocide on two species.

Heinousness

This series has a very, very high heinous standard, with a lot of villains threatening Earth, other planets, and sometimes even the universe and other dimensions. So, it seems like it's hard for him to stand out.

But, the Newtralizer has some unique actions. He actually has an onscreen kill count, since he devoured one of the Kraang, and blew up some of the Utrom. And he planned to murder billions of innocent people. He also had less resources than many other villains, who had entire armies or an immense amount of power. Newtralizer only had his natural abilities at first, then upgraded to getting electric powers, which were still nothing compared to the resources others had. And yet, with that, he threatened to destroy an entire city, killed multiple Utrom, and attempted to destroy Earth along along Lord Dregg so he could wipe out humanity and the Utrom at once. I think that's enough.

Final Verdict

He gets a weak yes from me, mainly because of his low amount of power and resources.

I'm not sure on the Newtralizer. Honestly I'm leaning no because the "genocidal Knight Templar" niche is done worse by the Triceratons. Even among non-qualifiers we have so many villains who try some sort of genocide. We have:

  • Shredder, who happily tried to doom the planet out of spite, alongside countless other instances of torture and attempted mass murder
  • The Triceratons and the Kraang are both genocidal aliens who wipe out entire planets, not just Earth
  • Dregg also tries to destroy all humanity...
  • ...so does Dracula, and the Overmind, and Kavaxas, and now we have this guy

Even among the villains who don't try to destroy the world, the standard is fucked. They adapted Jei from Usagi Yojimbo for a few episodes, and he flat-out murdered an entire family in his first scene. We judged that he wasn't bad enough.

At the least I'm proposing we take a second look at Kavaxas, who I am now getting serious Tengu Shredder vibes from (i.e. he's a literal world-destroying demon who's plans are being matched or outmatched by people well below his tier—all he does otherwise is suck out the souls of a few mooks). But I'm not sold on the argument of "trying to destroy the world" or even "trying to destroy the Kraang" when others match him in that exact regard.
