Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Is the fact that he spared the gas salesman cause he won the toin coss a possible honorable moment for him and thus a redeeming trait or some other thing ?

I'd say no. Chigurh operates on a strict fatalism. The guy at the gas station did nothing wrong and Chigurh forces him to bet his life on a coin toss over literally nothing.

The end of the film has Carla Jean point out the coin toss means nothing: Chigurh is the one with the real power and he kills her regardless.

You know, I've heard that Jeepers Creepers 3: Cathedral will be shot in 2016. When it will come out maybe we'd get the chance to know The Creeper's origins and decide if he can be considered a CM or not.

Speaking of 2016, Sherlock returns. Moriarty should be kept an eye on.

@ ACW

Regarding the quote for The Witcher monster page, I've found this one from Eredin.

"Remember your legends. Legends about people missing and returning after a year, only to see the graves of their relatives covered by grass. Are you going to say that they were pure fantasy, things taken from stories ? You are wrong. For centuries, people have been kidnapped, snatched by riders, by the Wild Hunt. Abducted, exploited and then thrown away like an empty shell once consumed. But do not expect to be that lucky, Zireael. You will die here, you will not see the graves of your friends."

It seems that the Apocalypse link on images for Complete Monsters is no longer working. Should we remove that?

With the final Starcraft game/standalone expansion out, we may need to keep an eye on Amon and Narud/Duran in two weeks time.

Found this on Les Légendaires:

  • Skroa has some shades of it too; while he lacked the time his rival Darkhell had to give himself a reputation, he was still willing to kill Danael after using him and the other Legendaries as pawns (granted, unlike Darkhell, he had reason to still see him as a threat). He treats his "daughter" Shun-Day's father-like love with disdain, to the point of hitting her in the face. He was even shown killing a Jaguarian kid at some point.
  • Anathos. An Omnicidal Maniac with absolutely no code of honor, his Kick the Dog include crushing and savagely crippling the protagonists, mocking Jadina about her relationship with the now "deceased" Danael, ordering his Hellions to torture physically and mentally Tenebris for information, and creating a plague attempted to exterminate people he wouldn't bother killing himself. Whereas Darkhell at least cared for his daughter and Skroa never went further than slapping his, Anathos killed his own Dark Mistress by blowing her head off just after pretending to forgive her defeat. This guy actually made Darkhell look sympathetic! Granted, considering he is this universe's God of Evil, that shouldn't really be surprising.

Anathos sounds like an easy keeper (Skroa not so much), but the thing is that this comic has never been released outside France. So unless someone here speaks French or has a translated copy, I don't think we can measure these characters unless we PM the person who originally added them.

Actually, the person who added these did comment on them a long time ago. Skroa was a comparative cut IIRC, but Anathos was an easy keeper

[up] Right... looking back at the history of the thread, I've found the discussion back in the 1400s. I don't ever believe there was any real voting, so we can either get the person who added him for a proper effortpost or I suppose we can submit this cleaned-out entry:

Les Légendaires: Anathos is the setting's resident God of Evil who has absolutely no code of honor, in comparison to Big Bad Darkhell. His actions include crushing and savagely crippling the protagonists, mocking Jadina about her relationship with the the now "deceased" Danael (whom Anathos is possessing), ordering his Hellions to physically and mentally torture Tenebris for information, and creating a plague to exterminate people he wouldn't bother killing himself. Whereas Darkhell at least cared for his daughter and Skroa never went further than slapping his, Anathos murdered Dark-Jadina by blowing her head off after pretending to forgive her defeat.

This past Halloween got me thinking about werewolf and vampire CMs, so I made a spreadsheet listing all of the ones I could find.

I knew that there were more vampire CMs than werewolves, but I didn't know there was such a large disparity between the two. I'm sure I missed a couple, but I still think it's neat to see them listed out. Also, Francesca Guerrera from The Originals seems to be the only female werewolf CM there is, so congrats to her.

It makes sense. Werewolves are more likely to b portrayed as the 'tortured' ones or in no control of their actions.

Saw this said already last page, but I want to reiterate: as someone who's interested in the Starcraft story, I would very much appreciate if people could actually stick to the two-week rule for once before discussing characters from Legacy of the Void.

Though incidentally, I'll be somewhat surprised if Amon doesn't turn out to be a GDV. It's unfair to call him one thus far (how many Bigger Bads have a real personality?), but "evil god who wants to destroy everything" isn't something that a lot of writers feel the need to elaborate upon.

Submitting an entry for Halo: Broken Circle.

  • The Prophet of Exquisite Devotion. He's a power-hungry Smug Snake who regularly bullies lower ranking Prophets and harbors extreme contempt for the Sangheili. Not only does he happily go along with the Prophet of Truth's plans to exterminate the Sangheili, but he tortures several captive Sangheili senators to death for no apparent reason other than because he can, then demands that Zo Resken participate in the executions in order to prove his loyalty to the Covenant. His cruelty stands out in light of the first half of the novel, which portrays the old Covenant as full of Grey-and-Gray Morality with no character wholly evil or unsympathetic. That a man like Devotion is now a right hand man of the Hierarchs serves as the book's example of how far the Covenant has fallen.

^^ New examples are best proposed on the assumption that no one else is familiar with the work (perhaps some are, but the majority likely won't be). In an "effortpost" such as the one linked above you explain in order who the character is, what they've done to be so monstrous, how they compare to other villains from the setting, and if they have any excuse for their actions or other redeeming qualities.

You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!"
