Then you probably shouldnt play XIII. Snow is a complete fucktard.

I've never played an FF game since. I like my characters and battles to be more fun or at least have a more awesome storyline (c.f. Persona & Dragon age).

XIII has a lot of parallels with Persona 3's story line...

Manipulated into Nice Job Breaking It, Hero, Angst over the fact that everything is falling apart and Screw Fate, the Big Bads are quite similar and the semi-downer ending ect.

I kinda liked Snow for the fact that he was a complete fucktard; he's the super-idealistic Hero character who makes all kinds of unsupportable talk, but in an environment cynical enough to call him on the bullshit. One of the first things we're ever told about him is from Vanille: "First impression of Snow? All talk."

But that's beside the point.

Regarding blitzball, I find myself going back to X just to play blitzball for hours every now and then. I enjoy it more than is healthy. @.@

I will say this, though: Wakka's unlockable Overdrives come in the wrong order. Attack Reels is a Game Breaker.

^ But as soon as his character arc is over, Snow goes back to his generic shonen hero persona and never ducks out. And everyone is okay with it and even start saying dumb stuff too.

Despite all my bitching about it, I quite liked X. I just hated Tidus. Fucker doesn't understand the concept of tact. Or shutting up. Or being respectful. Or much of anything really.

To be fair, if he did understand being respectful and shutting up, the game would have ended with Yuna calling the Final Aeon and dying to temporarily inconvenience Sin, and everyone going back about their happy Death Spiral lives.

Spira kinda needed a loud-mouth, disrespectful, tactless jackass to come through and go, "Why are you doing that? No, don't tradition me. It's bullshit. It's bullshit of the highest order of bullshit."

If your story requires the audience to be subjected to a really annoying character for hours in order to work... rewrite your story.

Tidus isn't a character for people who want to self-project themselves into the game.

He's the type of character you can appreciate more on the grounds of development.

This game was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played for a significant amount of time, and it's kind of a personal favorite of mine. I didn't mind Tidus, although looking back at some of the things he does, I can see why some might hate him. I also enjoyed the sequel as well, I don't care what anyone says.tongue

Spira kinda needed a loud-mouth, disrespectful, tactless jackass to come through and go, "Why are you doing that? No, don't tradition me. It's bullshit. It's bullshit of the highest order of bullshit."

Huh. I never thought of it that way.

It amazes me how many people didn't.

So many people (not speaking of you, specifically) want to judge Tidus at face value.

Thats the one thing I actually like about Tidus - how he basically says 'Fuck your traditions!' and actually attempts to fix problems rather than blindly following Yevon. Thing is, I really, hate naive, over - optimistic characters. I consider his heroic BSOD when he finds out the real purpose behind the pilgrimage as the high point of his character development. Then a couple of hours later, he starts saying that he'll come up with a way to save Yuna no matter what. I lost count of the number of times I shouted 'what part of its inevitable don't you understand moron?'. Then they all just basically wing it and succeed anyway. Of course, I realise the central point of the game is about fighting destiny, but did Tidus have to be such a naive, annoying douche about it? At least he's better than Wakka though. What a tool.

The key fault with the above assessment I have is that the "it's inevitable" statement ignores the fact that the entire Yevon clergy is revealed to be a horrible lie, layer by layer. It wasn't so much that Tidus was about ignoring sacrifice to defeat Sin (part of his character development is that he actually learns the value of sacrifice), but that he wanted to know why that sacrifice had to be made.

Before Tidus came along, everybody just did stuff without ever questioning WHY it needed to be done (Al Bhed excepted). Yuna herself acknowledges this during an early conversation with him: she never even stopped to ask why people do the things they do. That was just way it was done. So, Tidus eventually encouraged the entire party to ask simple question: "Why?"

Then when Yunalesca revealed that it was all bullshit, they finally had enough.

Fuck Seymour Flux and the grinding he necessitated, and fuck Tidus's asymmetrical pants. Some of the script was weak too - I remember quite literally facepalming when Tidus shouted "But I want everything!" in about the whiniest manner possible, especially right at the point of the Screw Destiny arc.

Aside from those bits, I really enjoyed FFX.

Personally I thought Wakka had more character issues than Tidus. Tidus had character developement. Wakka was somewhere between Dead Little Brother and Knight Templar almost the entire game

^ It helps if you have Holy with Nirvana. But I digress unlike Seymour Flux, Yunalesca is fairly easy with the right strategy. Constantly curing effects, leaving zombie on, doing massive amounts of melee damage Not throwing the controller at the screen on phase 3

Damn her and her stupid Zombie/Instakill combo!

On the 'its inevitable' point. Yes, the entire Yevon clergy were a bunch of manipulative dicks, and nobody ever asked why the sacrifices had to be made, but its not like anybody had a better alternative. For all anybody knew, the final summoning really might have been the only way to beat Sin, and Tidus was prepared to fuck everything up 'cos he didn't want some chick he just met a few weeks ago to die. Like I said, I dont like blindly optimistic characters. Just once, I'd love to see some naive moron try to Screw Destiny with The Power of Friendship, and end up horribly breaking everything.

Is it just me, or does everybody seem to hate Wakka?

No, you're attributing that to Tidus when it was Yuna who made that final decision. Yuna was the one, after the final summmoning turned out to be a lie, who rejected Yunalesca.

And really, what you're saying is exactly the point of that scene. Accepting the Final Aeon, even after learning it was horseshit, was exactly what Braska, Jecht and Auron did, and we saw where that led. The overall Aesop was about courage, and true hope versus false hope. False hope is exactly what caused the situation the world was in, and while what Yuna and the party did was insane, it was exactly what the world needed to stop dying like ostriches.

Yeah, I see what you mean. If they had gone along with the Final Summoning then we would have had a Bittersweet Ending on our hands. Which, incidentally, is my third favourite type of ending, after The Bad Guy Wins and Shoot the Shaggy Dog. Yes I like downer endings.

I like Bittersweet Ending and Earn Your Happy Ending.

A happy ending is usually just too sickeningly sweet, and a downer ending can be like a slap to the face after everything the heroes have been through. I prefer an unhappy medium.

Anyway, we're getting off topic. Anybody killed Penance?

Yes, the entire Yevon clergy were a bunch of manipulative dicks, and nobody ever asked why the sacrifices had to be made, but its not like anybody had a better alternative.

Actually, the Al Bhed did have a better alternative. It was called Operation Mi'hen, and while it did fail, it also set the stage for the Al Bhed hardware that would be used to finally destroy Sin forever.

It's just that nobody listens to them because they're heathens who don't blindly obey Yevon. No one will ever have a better alternative to what's being done now, if doing anything other than what's done now is forbidden.
