Go To

This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

Continuing on this thread, I forgot something that every other suspended users have been doing (but then again I really can't do anything about 'I can't edit my post').

So, for those wondering if I know where my mistake was (or simply do not have time to read my long post and proposal there), here's the mistake I committed: Extreme or persistent rudeness. I know I've said that it's my Single-Issue Wonk issue that caused me to act that way, doesn't take away that what's done is done, there is no excuse. And that seemed to cause me an accumulated number of thumps.

If there are other areas of mistakes I unconsciously committed from this case, let me know. At any rate, the mods can take their time in processing this. I do not mind.

~nombretomado

To answer your question, since I was only casually making edits, I did not put a lot of effort into familiarizing myself with the rules. Instead, I was mostly copying the writing style I had seen so far and that wasn't much of a problem until very recently. I once did receive a notification for using word cruft years ago and I avoided it since then, but otherwise, there were never any complaints about my writing style.

Now after getting suspended, I put some time into reading myself into various Administrativa pages of and I am somewhat impressed that TV Tropes is so organized. Needless to say, should I get unbanned, I will follow the rules to the best of my abilities.

However, as moderators, you simply cannot ignore suspended users for weeks (even by accident) and expect them not to get mad. Going through some of the older posts in this thread, I noticed that I am not the only one complaining about this and this seriously needs to improve if you want users to stay active on this wiki.

That being said, I would once more like to apologize for my rude tone and I would like to politely ask you to reinstate my editing rights.

The user that contacted me...well, I thought he was being rude himself. I never liked him so I never tried to talk to him. That being said, his equal rudeness (or at least my perception of him at the time) was what ticked me off when he P Med me.

I also admit I didn't fully read the page.

As I said, I've blocked him so as to not be goaded to be provoked again, and I plan on working on not getting into an argument with anyone I do not get along with.

I've got two Questions, this one will seem stupid but why did i get barred from editing? (I've got an idea as to why but would like it confirmed) and what do I need to do to get my editing privileges back?

Please respond when convenient for you, Thanks

~Kratos Asura: Your suspension is for severe issues with grammar and improper formatting of wicks and quote examples. You'll need to send your desired edits through the Get Help with English thread for a while before you can be allowed to edit again.

I don't want to sound inpatient especially since my last post and question came in the previous page, but I really want to know why I'm banned from editing pages, because I really can't think of a major problem that could cause me to get banned in the first place. For whatever problem I caused I apologize and want to know how I can fix it.

Please answer if you have the time.

~ChrisX, I am soliciting other mod opinions on your case.

~Gene0129, if you feel another user is being rude to you, then A) don't take the spat to a public forum like ATT, and B) report it to the mods so we can handle it as we deem appropriate. We can review PMs upon request, and, since we ask that PMs not be posted publicly, that would be an appropriately private venue.

That being said, when creating any subpage (or editing in general), you should be familiar with the trope description instead of just adding it. Are we clear on both points?

@nombretomado: Thank you for your time. Long story short, I know I acted rude and off topic, even if the cause was that a case of Single-Issue Wonk, it's still no excuse. I apologize and would like to be given my forum posting privileges back. I've already planned ways to avoid such case from happening again if I'm given another chance.

That's the short version in case you think my previous proposal last page was too much of a wall of text...

~nombretomado Is the reason I'm currently suspended for editing, because I added episodic troping to the awesome moments page? If so why is that such a big problem?

~Naijail, no, as stated here, you were suspended for edit-warring improper indentation. You even noted in your first post that you don't understand how indentation works. You appear to have edit-warred to restore improper indentation on at least two Moments subpages: Awesome.Yu Gi Oh VRAINS and NightmareFuel.Yu Gi Oh VRAINS.

We have two problems here: one is the Edit War, the other is Example Indentation in Trope Lists.

~zoopydoopy, yes, it's always a good idea to check edit history to make sure you are not engaging in an Edit War. If you feel you added (or deleted) something before, and now it's no longer there, chances are you're going to edit war by remaking the original edit.

While YMMV is prone to subjective opinion, we do still have rules that apply to them, such as the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment and Unfortunate Implications requiring citation. We also don't take well to agenda-based editing - i.e., editing with a goal of convincing others to take your side in an argument. You can see some quick summaries of various YMMV items here. If you click into almost any of these, you can see that there are definitions. YMMV isn't so fluid that you can ignore the set definitions.

Does that make things clearer?

~nombretomado I did say that I didn't understand the indentation rules completely, I'm sorry if my lack of knowledge caused problems for any other troper. I read through the indentation page and now understand and know the rules enough to prevent more mistakes.

I don't know how long my edit suspension takes or if it takes forever, but I really hope it will one day be over and that I'm allowed to edit again. I really like Tv Tropes and visit it everyday.

All I can say now is that I'm sorry once more for the problems I may have created and that I now understand what I did wrong. I will wait patiently for the day the suspension is lifted.

Hello, I'm completely new to being a troper and I've just been suspended for the first time because of an issue with editing Sibling Yin-Yang. I didn't even knew this was possible. What happened was the following: 1º: I was troping around and added a personal example. 2º: Sometime later I came back and found my edit removed, no explanation, no nothing. 3º: Thinking it was the work of a Troll who removed my post For the Evulz I decided to post it again and to keep reposting it until the Troll, whoever they were, gave up annoying me. 4º: Just recently I got twin messages to my account giving me reasons I couldn't get.

The Sibling Yin-Yang edit you made contains first-person language, either by using "me", "I", or other personal pronouns, or the deprecated "This Troper" phrasing. Wiki articles aren't about you, they are about the topic. Please keep this in mind while editing.

I tried to edit to write something else when I found out about the suspension. My reaction was, well, my reaction is... write the polite and civil appeal post as instructed. I'm sorry if I've been a trouble but I'll remember this, I'll try not to let it happen again because I '''really''' like being a troper and the Tranquil Fury above is more agaist myself for not knowing and the abstract fact that no introduction page ever told me this. So. Can I come back, please?

~Gene0129, your suspension is released.

~Keybreak, I'm with Fighteer's original responses on this one. Stating you're going to kill someone, then lashing out when forum rules are enforced, is hardly behavior that we will skim over. You say that you are "learning what I can and can't say where and when". The time for that was a while ago. I would like to hear a better accounting of why we can trust that this is not behavior that will be repeated.

~Mew1996, we appreciate your enthusiasm to edit, but it's always a constructive habit to be familiar with the wiki rules and good behavior. That's one thing. The second is that you thought it was a Troll, but the edit history clearly shows the valid reasoning as to why your edit was taken down. As a new troper, perhaps you weren't aware of this feature. I hope you are aware of it now.

The third, and final, is that this constitutes an Edit War, a pattern of back-and-forth fighting over a page we deeply disapprove of. If you add something, it's removed, and then you add it back, it's an edit war. If you delete something, it's added back, and you delete it again, it's an edit war. Disagreements are something we discuss, not something batted back and forth over the page itself.

That being said, again, your edit clearly violated our rules. We have a Welcome to TV Tropes that serves as an introduction page. Give it a read-through, and let us know if you have any further confusion on our expectations for troping.

~ChrisX, we are in agreement that your primary downfall is Single-Issue Wonk, particularly in the forums. So - here's the deal. We will release your suspension except for the Video Games subforum. You may work in the Pantheons; you may edit the wiki normally; etc. But your thumps and other contentious behavior is (I believe) exclusively limited to this area, and we are not interested in its continuation. Given that your suggestions for how you can continue being part of this community reflects an understanding of this problem area - I'm interested in if you will accept this.
