User creation date display options (Choices Still Open)

One of the many site updates Kory plans to push in the near future is for everyone's user creation to be publicly displayed. However, we didn't start to record user creation dates until sometime pre-2010, so accounts older than that get internally labeled as being created 1/1/2001 even though the site didn't exist back then. So, kory asked me to make this thread on his behalf so that we can get community input on what we should do with accounts that were created pre-2010

Everyone will have the option to just show their regular date OR a drop-down list of options based on their account age such as: (Current Options)

I prefer option 1.

Maybe let people choose on an individual basis (like relationship status) if it's possible.

I asked about that but Kory said that giving user a drop-down menu will require more code so he wants to choose between the options presented in the OP.

EDIT: after looking at the code it seems fairly easy to add a dropdown list of options or everyone. Just need to choose what options.

There's about ~1000 users with this issue VS the 450,000+ total users so allowing people to choose would be a bit of extra code for just a select group. The vast majority of peoples created dates are accurate so no need to change them.

It's extremely easy to code if we want to turn all those dates into a single option like "OG Troper" or randomly pick one on page load from a list. Or even change everyone's date thats older than 10 years to start picking from the list as well.

Agreed. Maybe add a lil tidbit that they were on TVT before 2010 as well in case of newcomers stumbling upon them and wondering what OG means?

Just use "OG Troper" or something similar. An alttext hint also wouldn't hurt.

Hmm. Well I was looking at the code for your profile and I think it actually is easy to add a drop-down list of options for everyone. If you guys think everyone would like that?

I could make it so every year or every few years your account ages you get new options added to the drop-down and have a single special option for people with the 2001 date.

How about we make the "account created" field read "Before recorded history"? It sounds sufficiently impressive while also being technically accurate.

Hey, it would be cool if users whose accounts would have this "OG user" / "Older than dirt" / etc thing could get a badge to commemorate this!

warjay77, my changes to the badge shop fixes the maintain badges page so the mods can update current badges and upload new ones anytime.

I am good with whatever the community chooses.

As for a badge, we would need somebody to volunteer and make one (unless there's a active mod that's good at designing badges)

I'm not sure what the point of making this information public is, but the only way I can imagine wanting to use it is if I get to display as "One of the Oldest Ones in the Book", or possibly "Time Abyss" or "Primordial Chaos" or something.

I can add all of those options. I can add whatever anyone suggests, just like how the relationship status has many choices this can also have many.

Oh? Okay, then, I guess! All of those were meant as versions of the 2001 date category (though maybe "Oldest Ones in the Book" might be more appropriate for >15 years, rather than the one which is strictly speaking older than the record book).

Added current suggestions to the OP. Keep in mind it will have the word "joined:" or "Since:" before the date.

Or i could make it so if you choose a text option the "Since:" or "Joined:" doesn't show.

Instead of settling for one singular option for each age, maybe we can take titles from works and have multiple options. Like Relationship Status since I took inspiration from that.

For example, going with Star Wars:

• <1 year — Troper Youngling
• >1 year — Troper Apprentice
• >5 years — Troper Knight
• >10 years — Master Troper

And people can make other suggestions to add to that list for different ages.

I like the idea on the image if the creation date is unknown letting the user pick it from a list.

I wonder how old timers that no longer use their older handles could be marked as (granted I'm not the oldest, but I have been around since '09 or '10 IIRC). Probably the date of the newest account would still be fair I suppose.
