Letting ~Chloe Jessica know the thread was made.
Anyway, I'm in favor of merging, and Arbitrary Range Limitations sounds like a good name pending further suggestions.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. That name sounds good.

She/Her | Currently cleaning Char CloneThe proposed merge, unlike the minimum/maximum range, seems completely logical and not at all arbitrary.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.I do have a bit of a concern about the "arbitrary" part of the trope. In videogames, ranges may be arbitrary, but in other works I've seen logical range limitations can have plot-relevant functions. Would the merged trope exclude these?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWe may consider other names like Weapon Range Limit and etc. If there are enough non-vg examples, a split can be considered since being a videogame mechanic comes with own reasons.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupI agree the arbitrary part sounds like it should apply only to videogame mechanics. It's hard to say for sure this needs a split without a wick check.
There are a lot of non-videogame links, so wick check or not we'll have to make a decision on them.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe thing is, I asked the thread's drafter (since she's not banned from the wiki or PMs) whether a wick check was done after I saw that there wasn't one in the OP, and she said that previous discussion on the tropes ended with nobody being sure what a wick check would be looking for. So what would one be looking for?
I don't think anyone else was previously concerned about the "arbitrary" part — the concern was that the split between "maximum" and "minimum" into two tropes instead of just one is unnecessary because there's nothing else separating them.
Either way a sandbox was drafted for the merge if we end up doing that. The trope would still be about minimum and maximum ranges; we'd just be using one trope for both instead of keeping them split (the latter being the current situation).
Edit: Oh, right, and I should probably mention that I posted this not long after getting out of bed, so if any wording was unclear, it's because I hadn't had any coffee yet.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Hooked a crowner for whether to merge.
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Calling in favor of merging Arbitrary Minimum Range and Arbitrary Maximum Range.
What are our name options?
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass. For the sake of it throwing in
- Arbitrary Weapon Range
- Contrived Projectile Reach
- Shooting Distance Limit
- Weapon's Range Effectiveness
What are we defining the trope as?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe same way Arbitrary Maximum Range and Arbitrary Minimum Range are already defined, but with one trope covering both minimum and maximum ranges instead of the two being separate. There's no middle ground between minimum and maximum; we're only making a single change by folding the minimum and maximum aspects into one trope.
Sandbox.Arbitrary Range Limitations is a draft for the new description. Making changes other than folding minimum ranges and maximum ranges into a single trope (as opposed to how they're currently split into two tropes) isn't on the table without a wick check.

TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallCalling crowner in favor of Arbitrary Weapon Range as the name for the merged trope.
Macron's notesSo we're just drafting a description now?
For wick moving, Arbitrary Minimum Range has 177 wicks, while Arbitrary Maximum Range has 207. Combined, that's 384 wicks to clean.
TRS Queue | Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining | Troper WallSandbox.Arbitrary Range Limitations exists for drafting the description, albeit not under the name we ended up going with. I'd imagine the examples could be moved as-is since we didn't change much other than folding two tropes with small differences into one trope.
Edit: Moved it to Sandbox.Arbitrary Weapon Range to make things easier.

Here's the Related page of the merged trope, since the old tropes' Related pages are accessible there.

Crown Description:
Consensus was to merge Arbitrary Minimum Range and Arbitrary Maximum Range. What should the merged trope's name be?
To-do list
Not a duplicate, exactly, but Arbitrary Minimum Range and Arbitrary Maximum Range are pretty clearly a single trope that's been split artificially. Both tropes serve the exact same purpose: game balance, incentivizing players to use their resources effectively, and reducing hardware workload. When they're used outside of video games, they're there to create tension and give the characters an obstacle to overcome. These should be merged into a single trope, possibly called Arbitrary Range Limitations.
