Being a popular prequel to a popular show, House of the Dragon attracts a lot of tropers, and with this a lot of disputable troping, edit wars, and misuse in its main and subpages. This thread aims to discuss questionable examples and come to a consensus about them. It can also be used for subpage organization discussions down the line.

OP outta the way, I mentioned in the media thread that this show's character sheets have a big problem with trying to shoehorn any Adaptation Deviation by the characters into some morality judgement. E.g. these from Aemond's folder in Characters.House Of The Dragon Greens:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: He insults his cousins when they confront him, threatens to kill his nephews for attacking him, and picks up a rock when they persist. In the books, there were no death threats and no rock (though he did start pummeling Jace "savagely" in the same situation), and he never had any confrontation with Daemon's daughters at all.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy:
    • His altercation with Joffrey never happens, and he shows a niceness towards Helaena that his book counterpart never did, telling Aegon to give his future queen more respect.
    • At Laena's funeral, he sees Jace visibly upset upon losing his biological father and seems to be on the verge of wishing him condolences. The whole complexity about the children's parentage and the animosity between the families fueled by his mother's hatred stops him from doing it. His book counterpart would never consider doing such a thing.
    • His Establishing Character Moment in the books shows him having a nasty misogynistic streak (calling Rhaenyra a "Old Whore") when talking about the Succession Crisis between Aegon and Rhaenyra. In the series, one of his most noble aspects is how much he cares about both his sister and his mother and directs his scorn instead at Aegon, who for many, many reasons is a far worthier target of Aemond's resentment.
    • His murder of Lucerys is far less intentional than in the book. While he does state his intention to take out Lucerys's eye, and chases him through the storm, it's presented as him doing this more to torment and frighten Lucerys. Things turn when Arrax tries to fight back and an angered Vhagar chases after them, ignoring Aemond's commands and crushing them in her jaws, with Aemond looking visibly distraught by what just happened. In the book, by contrast, it's made clear that Aemond knowingly sicced Vhagar on them with malice and intent.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: In the books, he was said to be fierce from birth, twice as fierce as his brother. He was never said to have been bullied, though he had a rivalry with his nephews and resented them for being ahead of him in line for the throne. Here he is a relatively passive child up until he Takes A Level in Badass upon claiming Vhagar, at which point he gets back on track with his book counterpart. His book version was never dutiful and just became more of a wildman as time went by. Meanwhile, while his adult version is still bloodthirsty and vicious, he is also well-read, responsible and contemplative and notes himself that he'd be a better king than Aegon (not that that's particularly hard).

Jerkass and Nice Guy are contradictory, and already documented in Personality Change. Snip snip?

It would be great if the thread were to be renamed to cover not just HotD, but the rest of the Song of Ice and Fire franchise, including GoT.

Frankly, I think we need to discuss whether this usage of Adaptational... tropes is fine or not. Above we see a character with both Adaptational Jerkass and Adaptational Nice Guy listed, that seems wrong to me.

I'm pretty sure half the reason Adaptational Personality Change exists in the first place is to cover this sort of "a character's personality is changed in various ways that can't be broken down cleanly" usage.

From One True Love:

  • House of the Dragon: Daemon Targaryen and his niece Rhaenyra for each other, in the end. They went through multiple lovers and Arranged Marriages and ultimately they can't live without each other.

Is it me or does this not actually how they are presented as the end all be all love like the trope is supposed to be about. They might count and maybe it does give enough context and I missing something, but wanted to get more opinions on if this needs a rewrite or not.

I think One True Love is supposed to be about soulmates, not just a romance arc.

Yeah that is my understanding as well. According to the description at least it's supposed to be like the be all end all for the characters in regards to romance. Which I personally don't think is how Rhaenyra and Daemon is presented. At least I don't see that in how are presented and the entry is written more like a Official Couple entry.

Definitely agree that the entry could be better written.

I fixed the One True Love entry, I just scrapped Daemon-Rhaenyra. It fits Viserys-Aemma better in my opinion.

Cool. The new entry demonstrates the trope much better in my opinion.

The character sheets tend to treat Daeron’s existence as fact. Has he been referred to at all in the show or is it (as I suspect) just a Word of God that he exists (meaning: can be excised in rewrites)

[up]He’s been confirmed to appear next season, it’s just that apparently the producers/writer’s couldn’t fit him in during the show’s premiere season.

I don’t think a Word of God character should be in the sheets *now* though. It’s like saying (hypothetically) Superman warrants an entry on Film. The Batman 2022 because the director said he exists in the world.
