Reality TV Show cleanup thread

Go To

So reality shows are a tricky thing to trope since they involve real people, but there are a few things that can certainly be fixed.

(I am mainly referring to the pages for the show Big Brother for this, as that is the franchise that needs the most fixing (to my knowledge) and will be the source of several examples.)

  • Information added during a season should be updated to present-tense, or (more commonly) removed since opinions can drastically shift from episode to episode.

  • YMMV tropes (particularly ones like The Scrappy) should be kept to a minimum unless there is readily available/understandable reason for being listed. Opinions on real people can differ easily and drastically.

  • For some reason these shows tend to attract a lot of misused tropes, which need to be fixed.

  • And most of all, the character pages need a long look over because they're essentially a dumping ground for whatever's on the troper's mind, and are almost always added during the season proper (leaving their trope descriptions left in past-tense).

Alright fair, although is there a reason for the link in the first place?

That's why I said the removal may have been valid anyway, in my edit reason. The problem is you jumped straight to the racism accusations.

Alright well my apologies for not being clear enough in my edit reasoning, and I do agree that was very poorly worded (I think I was half asleep), hopefully this cleared that up.

Is there another problematic edit you had in mind or was it in fact just that one?

I think we're good here. Once the database stuff is done I'll remove the Survivor Oz line again.

Speaking of edit war avoidance, I still think the Fiji orgy rumor you removed from Memes.Survivor is valid, because of how frequently it's brought up in online discussions of the allegedly involved contestants (including the original source).

You said it "wasn't really a meme", but because no one takes the rumor seriously anymore, it became a meme when it resurfaced post-Cagayan.

erm hm...

I suppose if people are treating it as a meme at this point it can go back on. I am a little uncomfy with the weird misinformation surrounding it as well as the subject material but whatever I suppose.

Following on from previous discussion (both on this thread and between the staff) we now have some Crowner proposals for the way certain tropes are applied to Reality Show contestants as 'characters'.

If there are alternatives, we can look to add them to the Crowner as well.

If you ask me, there should be a distinction between the character and the person. So Russell Hantz can be hated In-Universe but not by the fanbase out of it. In other words, Hated by All can be used for someone who isn't well liked in Survivor by other players.

Fair warning: I can get pretty emotional and take things too seriously.

Calling the current Crowner now, after some discussion within the mod team. It's been running six days and both questions have a decisive majority.

  • Breakout Character: remains valid for Reality Show contestants, but only within the context of the show. (11:1, +30, 33 yays, 3 nays, 36 total votes)

  • The Scrappy, Base-Breaking Character and similar hated/controversial "character" tropes: only apply to reality show contestants if this audience reaction is acknowledged within the show. (4.14:1, +22, 29 yays, 7 nays, 36 total votes)

On the second point - if it has to be acknowledged within the work itself, that's also likely to move some examples from the YMMV subpage to the work page itself, using [[invoked]] tagging.

Next step will be to add suitable notes to document the decision (e.g. on trope pages), then cleanup on the existing examples.

Since none of the Base-Breaking Character examples on Survivor are acknowledged on the show, except maybe Jerri Manthey's booing and Rupert Boneham can I cut the page and keep those examples? Although I think Russell Hantz might be another example.

Russell isn't really a base breaker within the show, everyone hates him lol.

EDIT: Wait I forgot about the America's favorite thing, nvm he's valid.

I must say I do agree that the trope Hated by All seems to be The Scrappy for in-universe examples, but I can roll with this...

Crown Description:

Audience reaction tropes such as The Scrappy and Base Breaking Character can sometimes veer into Real Life Troping due to the nature of Reality Shows.

Even if we cut references to events outside the work (e.g. the contestant's social media posts and tabloid headlines) those events may still be an underlying factor in any audience reaction. If so, the reaction is at least partly to the performer, not just the character.

With that in mind:
