If it was just an original dark fantasy story it might be okay. As is using this IP? Not a fan at all. Despite hating the concept behind her, I think Beatrix might be my favorite part? She's probably the most interesting character to watch at least.

Beatrix is a lot of fun, yeah.

So far, I also really like how they handled Silva. They could have easily made him a jerk drill sergeant type, and shows with teen protags often do, but he's a fairly reasonable level-headed guy.

So I enjoyed the series more than I expected.

Bloom really really needs to stop trusting the last person to talk to her. She did realize it in the end though. I'm curious how much it will stick.

Also Terra was in the wrong versus her dad 95% of the time. He probably should have just said he can't tell her about the things going on. But wow they really didn't need to know the full picture at that point.

Also was nice how they might have been setting up Dane/Riven/Beatrix or Dane/Riven for next season.

Of the Winx I think my favorite was Stella. Although she really needed a few more nice moments early on. And her expositing about her relationship with her mother was very clunky.

I also hope Farah comes back somehow, because she was great. I liked all of the three main teachers a lot really.

Some really petty complaints I have.

The whole setup with the students in the courtyard makes zero sense for a school that was recently used in wartime. It would have made so much more sense to barricade younger students in central windowless fortified rooms and create chokepoints to take advantage of magic and specialists.

I also feel like the "taking the door" scene was a bad idea in hindsight. Just because I've read a few things online about that being a really easy way to screw up a teenagers development and cause trust issues. Especially when its done as shown in the show and not for stuff like deal issues.

When I write it out like this I feel like I probably shouldn't have enjoyed the show as much as I did. The ending was definitely messy.

But there's something about it that just made me really enjoy it regardless.

I watched it this weekend— I briefly watched the show when I was younger but I didn't really remember enough from the original show to be mad at what they changed— except I will say I'm pretty sure Stella was pretty nice from the original, and that Bloom was a lot more likable.

On it's own, I found the beginning of the show to be a mess. There was too much Drama and everyone had their own plot lines going on and it became a bit much when everyone has so much. Almost all of the characters were unlikable except for Aisha and Silva. I feel like at the halfway point (episode 4) where most of the plots actually began to work well together. The one big exception for me was with Bloom, who was a really frustrating character for the most part. She had no loyalty to her friends and was so dead set on finding answers she literally risked the lives of all her classmates. She was super selfish until the last part of the last episode. I can kind of appreciate what they were going for but I think they went a bit far with it— Bloom comes off as either really dumb or super unlikable— it really isn't good when I root more for characters like Stella and even Beatrix more than the protagonist.

At the end of the day, despite the rough start and the main character being a mess for most of the show, I feel like it has a lot of potential and I would genuinely be interested in where it goes from here, hoping it maintains the quality of the last few episodes.

The show is getting a season 2.

Oh that was quick.

I honestly wasn't expecting this show to be renewed, if only because I've personally had bad luck with Netflix shows I like in the past getting canceled after one season, but I'm glad this was an exception.

I'm excited, especially given how the first season ended.

[up]Everyone complaining about similarities to Riverdale forgot Riverdale has been running for multiple seasons and is a runaway success.

Congratulations to the staff.

Like I said, I've had bad luck in the recent past (I can think of 4 shows off the top of my head I've watched on Netflix in the past year or so that didn't get a season 2 that I was really looking forward to).

So with this, I just didn't want to get my hopes up.

[up] I’m so sorry if I came off as mean spirited

It’s just I really didn’t care for the show. Tbh I couldn’t stomach the series past a couple episode.

I’m glad that you were able to enjoy it. And maybe a second season can fix the problems with the show.

Actively rooting for other people's creative efforts to fail is mean-spirited.

I don't like Family Guy. I don't want Family Guy to be canceled and all the people working on it to lose their jobs.

It's ok if entertainment you don't like exists.

Good point, I went too far. I’m glad the people still have jobs.

Maybe I should at least finish the season

Just finished watching this show with my girlfriend after we picked it up on a whim. Honestly, we had a jolly time ragging on it. Most of the cast is unlikable (especially the main heroine) with flip-flopping character arcs, there’s quite a few plot holes, dialogue is horrendous and it’s “woke” in all the wrong ways.

Overall it was quite the lovely experience.

One thing I'm hoping is that season 2 let's us have a few scenes of the heroes together before breaking them up for inevitable reasons.

Like the big shots from the various trailers of them all arriving on campus together come from the last episode, the last scene even.

It reminds me of Dirk Gently and how season 1 ended with the main trio together, all on the same page for really the first time, and then broke that up immediately after

Bloom has always had unlikability problems, to be fair. It's kind of inherent to the character at this point that she's self-centered.

Was she? I only watched the 4Kids dub/read the few comics released in America back when that was a thing and while Bloom was never my favorite (Those roles went to Tecna and Stella.) I liked her well enough.

She was fine until about season 3, then she got more and more self-centered. Check the YMMV page for Winx Club, it's kind of funny how many people disliked her.

I'm not sure if this is related to that or not, but at one point there was significantly more fanart for Dark Bloom compared to regular Bloom too.

[up]x2

Ah. Looking it up I only saw the first two seasons. That and the Netflix spinoff World of Winx.

As for Dark Bloom getting a lot of fanart...I think that's a case of Evil Is Sexy more than a problem with Bloom herself but, well, my knowledge of the show and its fanbase is limited.

Is Zanbaq or whatever it's called a thing in the original show? I find it bizarrely hilarious that a world with magic has to resort to tranquilizers of all things, though maybe it's just the show hyping up the Burned Ones as super dangerous when they're basically walking Special Effect Failures and don't really pose any danger to the heroes.

So, let's hang an anchor from the sun... also my Tumblr
