Wiki and Forum Policy - General Discussion

Go To

Note: The thread currently has a limit of one post every two hours for non-mod users. Currently, this is hard-coded by the admins, but there are plans to give mods the ability to toggle it without admin intervention. After mods are given the ability to do that, the time limit may be further reduced or removed entirely.

This thread is for discussing the following topics:

  • Questions and clarifications about the site's rules and policies pertaining to wiki editing, forum posting, trope launching, and so on.
  • If you have an idea for a thread on another part of the forums but aren't sure if creating it would be allowed, feel free to ask here.

This thread is not for any of the following:

  • Reporting complaints or concerns about specific moderation decisions (e.g. suspensions and thumps). Report these directly to the admins via the contact form. Selecting "The Staff" sends your message to the admins only, without making it visible to moderators.
  • Queries about thumps applied to your own forum posts (reply to the relevant moderator via PM).
  • Ban appeals (use the "Edit Banned" thread in this forum).
  • Reporting problems or requesting moderator action in the wiki or forums (use Ask The Tropers or Hollersnote  or specialized threads such as "Locked Pages").
  • Queries about locked On-Topic Conversations (OTC) threads or banned discussion topics. OTC has its own moderation discussion thread here, and the latest statement on the locked US Politics thread and other banned OTC topics is here. Bluntly, when certain OTC threads and topics have repeatedly caused problems, we're not going to provide forum space to discuss them again until the moderation toolkit is equipped to handle those conversations.
  • Cut List challenges and queries (they have their own thread here).
  • Requests for changes to the site's code or discussion about such changes', as mods cannot change the code; only the admins can do that. Please direct tech requests to Query Bugs or Query Wishlist, and take other tech-related discussion to the Changelog thread.
  • Crowner actions. Please use the holler function instead.
  • Discussion about changing or implementing policies. Please use Wiki Talk for that. (Asking whether it's OK to make a specific thread is acceptable; using this thread in place of such a thread is not.)
  • Asking about the whereabouts of inactive mods (or other inactive users) before they return, if they return at all. Use the Absent people thread for discussing inactive users.

Posts that use this thread in place of the sections listed in the bulleted list above are off-topic.
We're aware that the Edit Banned thread has a Non-Indicative Name, due to it also covering non-editing suspensions. We're not sure whether the name for that thread can even be edited without breaking the special coding that keeps posting restricted to mods and suspended users, so we're leaving it alone for now, because better safe than sorry.

It also didn't really result in any big changes wiki-wise, besides talking about TLP community issues, which we had already started doing anyway. I think the taboo around it and the shame of the tropers involved made it a bigger deal than it is in the long run.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up][up]Even if I hadn't removed it, it would've been removed by the mods anyway. It was simply not worth documenting.

The Google Incidents led to changes in the content policy.

The only thing 5T led to was talking about 5T.

Trouble Cube continues to be a general-purpose forum for those who desire such a thing.

I just don't agree for the aforementioned reasons I listed, but whatever the mods say, I will abide by. For one thing, a lot of minor things are mentioned on the timeline page, like the complete monster thread reaching 10,000 pages.

[up]If it's any consultation, here was the original entry on the Timeline page. I'll spoiler mark it due to decency because this is a sensitive thing for all of us.

EDIT: Removed because I didn't feel comfortable keeping it up.

I've said my thoughts about it, I'm just waiting for what the mods have to say at this point. If they say no go on timeline, then no go on timeline, that's that.

OK, so it seems like most of the mod team is against adding it back to the timeline, so it's probably staying off it.

TBH, I don't like 5T as the official name because it's so non-descriptive, people have no idea what that even means, even as an acronym. Maybe that's the intent? To bury the whole thing? Either way, I prefer to call it the "Gay TLP Incident" because it's accurate to what it is and it gives people some context of what went down.

I was upset that it can't be added to the timeline page as well, at least at first, but at least it's thanks to the ban I've managed to report a bunch of errors in the TLP suspension banner. So whatever.

I don't think a bunch of people deciding to act really immature is something that really needs to be remembered on the timeline.

I'm fine either way. I personally don't think it should be on the timeline, but if people ask what it is they should at least be linked to the Wiki Talk thread about it so that they know. I agree that "5T" isn't very descriptive.

I really don't know what documenting 5T on the site is supposed to accomplish, because I can't think of anything positive coming from it.

Documenting it wouldn't prevent another such incident from happening or being attempted. In fact, it would set a terrible precedent: a lot of trolls only want attention, and permanently immortalizing incidents of misbehavior on the website sounds like a dream come true for most such cretins.

Is it a desire to have permanent reminder of this temporary lapse in judgement? It comes off as excessively punitive on the part of those who weren't involved, and needlessly self-flagellatory on the part of those who were. It would invite ridicule and derision over both the incident itself and the fact that we insisted on documenting it. Are we really so convinced of our own importance that every tussle we have on this website should be considered a key point in its history?

Maybe it's the jaded old fart in me, but I don't see 5T as anything more a single thread of sound and fu(cke)ry signifying diddly squat. It's only interesting if you have a weird fixation on tempest-in-a-teacup Internet drama. Nothing permanently changed because of it and its occurrence didn't inform the site culture going forward. If it didn't have so many participants, we wouldn't even be talking about it now.

After the dust cleared and everyone served their sentences, the only thing left to do was to forgive each other, forgive themselves, and move on. Immortalizing the incident like a badge of shame (or pride!) is pretty much the opposite of moving on.

[up][up]You have a point. Let's bury that mess and move on, because I don't want it to define my entire experience on the site onward.

I remember me and Warjay adopted the "defending bombed drafts" stance shortly after the incident as a Single-Issue Wonk, which became so obstructive to other people on TLP that we were appropriately called out for it, because we let the Gay TLP Incident cloud our judgment. It's one thing to look back on the incident as a reminder to not do this thing again, but to let it control our lives is another thing entirely, and that's not good.

The draft got nuked, but the "Add Reply" button is still active. It needs to be deactivated (or "put on hold", which I've seen happen to other drafts).

Is there anyway to double nuke it? Like how you empty the recycle bin after moving a file there

5T can be buried. It had nothing to add anything besides Old Shame. Though I don't know if the Yack Fest incidents that closed two threads and another nuked thread, had lead to any progress of reforms regarding the forums? All I know is that there's a progress on expanding Troping Under The Influence.

Well that sucks. It's been a year since those incidents, and we don't want another incident like that.

I still feel like some of the rules proposed make sense, but others felt too strict.

[up]I'm sure it won't happen again, since from what I've heard, the straw that broke the camel's back was a roleplay fallout with most key members of it having already left.
