500K articles reached - milestone thread

Alright, everyone. This is it. On the day of August 6 2020, we've reached 500000 articles (see this page) ^note if you're curious, the 500Kth page is VideoGame.Notebook Wars. This is a huge milestone for the TV Tropes wiki, as we have never had quite the largest pool of topics to cover (even if there is the There Is No Such Thing as Notability policy). And it took us over 15 years... May we say, TVT has hit puberty?

I still remember that we hit 400000 on Easter 2018. I tell you all, the Timeline.TV Tropes page exists and you should update it. This also means that we've had an additional 100K articles added in 2 years and 4 months or so.

To be honest, some of our places we have may be still lacking, we still are largely English, there are thousands of games and fanfics without pages. Some of these problems may not be surmountable without further admin help (since our language systems are crap and largely abandoned). The amount of deletionism has also steadily grown over the years to an extent some may find alarming, but these things happen, I suppose.

I have created a logo for this occasion admins may want to use it (or modify it themselves, it's mainly an idea). Alternatively, they could make a banner advertising this achievement and this thread. Of course, stickying this thread would also be welcome.

I would like to express my thanks to everyone who worked on the project. Some things may get worse, some may get better, but at the very least, the number of articles keeps growing.

This thread has received help from War Jay 77 as she said this was fine, so a huge thanks to her as well (she is a hard worker).

I plan to post a thread in a week or more after this, after celebrations slow down and people calm down, to improve something that's been bugging me for a while. After that... I don't know.

Now, please discuss what we can do next or share your thoughts about our evolution and this accolade and of course, celebrate. You can also put on some music you like, I'd personally recommend a version of one of these tracks (except the PC Speaker one) or this if you prefer something more mellow. ALL HAIL TVT 500K!!!

What an awesome achievement!

I’m always surprised to hear how many articles this one wiki has, even if I know there’s a ton. And it’s crazy to think that we still haven’t even begun to cover all the media of the world yet, and that there’s still many subpages that could be created- and that’s not even touching on the fact that only a small portion of this wiki has been translated into other languages.

Anyway, congrats to 500k!

And yeah, I agree with . I actually have a list on my profile of pages I'd like to make and haven't been able to yet- it feels like we're not even halfway through collecting every piece of media we can, which is fascinating.

- Agreed. If we were even just to have a page for every piece of media on Wikipedia, no tropes... I'd say we'd easily hit 1 million pages without counting any YMMV stuff.

We are a long way from having completed even one set of works:

• 15144 film pages, but according to this publication in 2011 there were about 500,000 films in existence back then. So we cover about 3%. We sometimes cover more than one film on the same page, but it's unlikely to change the estimate by more than a factor of 2.
• 13543 video game pages. Estimates of the total numbers range between 74000 and 1200000 although I am not sure how much double counting there is. 18% to 1.1%
• 12565 literature items. There are many estimates on how many English-language fiction there is but it certainly measures in the millions. So likely less than 1%.
• 8450 fanfictions. Going by Wikipedia FanFiction.Net has almost a hundred times more works on Harry Potter alone.

Well, our main goal is to slowly consume every piece of media in existence, right?

Some works violate our content policy so we can't document literally everything, haha.

Anyways, 500k is amazing. I hope to at least launch my 100th article by next year.

100th, wow. I have four work pages and an index and consider myself accomplished.

3 work pages (Air Crash Investigation, The Tamarisk Hunter and Wet Desert: Tracking Down a Terrorist on the Colorado River) and 4+ tropes over here. Definitively not one of the big hitters.

eta: However, the first two work pages have almost 18000 and over 1000 inbounds, which is a lot.

I'd say I've contributed quite a bit, at least a hundred pages, though I've largely lost count these days and many of them were Laconic/. I believe my best article contribution was either proposing that we split VideoGame.Super Smash Bros or making a page on Big Bill Hell's (even if it still had a lot of growth later).

And darn, that's a good comparison of how much we still have left to do (like, I did say there are thousands of video games and fanfics without pages, but the hole goes deeper than that)... Truly, a troper's work is never done.

I mostly contribute tropes, but I've contributed... let's see... about 32 work pages, assuming I collected them all on my tropers page.

Been thinking of making more short story work pages. I have a book that's just a compilation of them so that's a ton of potential pages right there.
