Trope Idea Sounding Board

Might actually be a thing... there is a scene from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy where Heart Of Gold's Infinite Improbability Drive momentarily turns the entire ship, including passengers, into Yarn. Arthur even vomits yarn! youtube link.

Might be better to start a Concept Level trope for "Video Game Settings based around a concept", if we don't already have that?

For my proposed trope, I am unsure if this comic strip example of The Flying McCoys count (the floor is soft and the "softwood" could be stuffing for all we know).

I don't see how that counts at all; that's just a simple gag that applies to only the floor, not an entire environment.

Well then.

That comic strip could go into Rubbery World instead of the proposed Plush Land trope.

Why not broaden it to something like Gimmick World?

That sounds too easily confused with something like Planet of Hats.

Anybody think a Broadway Actors index would be interesting? Maybe expand it to Broadway And West End Actors? (Theatre Actors feels too broad.) This would cover both actors known for Broadway/West End acting (like Idina Menzel) and people who have performed in at least one major Broadway/West End production.

Is there a lot of overlap between the two? Otherwise why merge them like that?

Moreso that they serve a similar purpose, and I didn't want to exclude the West End, but I suppose it'd be better to separate them since they're different geographically.

I know this won't become a trope but hear me out: Sympathetic Pedophile. Examples: The Good Doctor, episode title "Empathy," the doctors elaborate on performing an operation that would get rid of his desires for children. The whole thing is dramatized. Lolita. Although False Narrator is in play, Humbert lures the reader in with flowery language as he takes advantage of the young Dolores. Excel Saga. The manga. Gojo Shioji's attraction is explained to be non-sexual but strong nonetheless. After his mother smothers him with her breasts all the time, Shioji inexplicably becomes attracted to his younger cousin.

Honestly kinda interesting, but I feel like that'd be a magnet for things we do not want to deal with.

Maybe rename it so that it would not sound horrible. Like similar to "Rape Portrayed as Redemption" instead of "Rape as Redemption". How about "Pedophile Portrayed Sympathetically"?

Umm...my comment not a suggestion to rename "Rape Portrayed as Redemption". I simply offered the potentially better name for a trope about pedophiles portrayed sympathetically.

Basically, that it'd be safer to create a trope focusing on the aspect of "a character suffers from pedophilia as a mental illness or curse" as opposed to the broader and much riskier concept of "a character is a sympathetic pedophile."

Right. Mentioning the Lolita guy, for example, seemed off to me because he may be a sympathetically portrayed pedophile, but that doesn't necessarily mean his pedophilia is portrayed sympathetically in the same way as the other examples. I personally wouldn't want a trope that's just "A pedophile, but not evil", as that opens the floodgates to all sorts of Values Dissonance examples.

"Troubled Pedophile" may be a better name, in that case.

Rather than a name like Sympathetic Pedophile, and treating the trope carefully, how about:

• Unwanted Pedophilic Urges / Anti Teleoiphile: A character has pedophilic urges but is unwilling to actually be a pedophile, considers it a problem to get rid of for good, and wants treatment to get rid of the urges, whatever the cost (not just financial).

Sort of like how Anti-Hero is a hero with the qualities of a villain or an Anti-Villain a villain with the qualities of a hero in some ways, here I've used the Greek word for attraction to adults, teleoiphilia, going along the same lines for that. (That came from Google "opposite of pedophile" as first result, for that word).

To avoid the page becoming a magnet for unwanted, it would stick solely to examples of "Character knows they're a pedophile, hates the status quo they've got and the cards they're dealt in life, but wants to stop themselves before going on this path of wrongdoing with no way out".
