There is a redirect called Glitch Character too. One question I have, this page has over 8000 inbounds does that say that it has become a defined term for this thing?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think it's more likely people thought it was about the actual Missingno, like a lot of the site itself did.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI prefer the name Glitch Entity since Glitch Sprite can easily be confused for an existing character or item's sprite becoming distorted due to a glitch. And this trope can sometimes just be a glitched item in the menu that doesn't have a sprite.
The Trope Namer is a very well-known video game glitch, so as WarJay said, a lot of inbounds probably mistakenly thought the page was about the trope namer specifically rather than also covering other glitches.
As for whether this is a preexisting term, I've only ever seen the name Missingno. used in the context of the Trope Namer and and as a Fan Nickname for glitch Pokémon from later installments of the Pokémon series (mainly Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire). I've never seen the name applied to glitch characters from other series, and I've never seen the name used at all for glitch items, even from the Pokémon series.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Yep. Never heard it aside from as a reference or deliberate Shout-Out to Pokemon.
OK, Glitch Entity. But with Glitch Sprite as redirect?
As mentioned, Glitch Sprite sounds more like "any time a sprite is glitched"
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIs it possible to hook the crowner I posted a week ago?
Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Attached the crowner.
Re: inbounds: From Googleing this it looks like it's sometimes used as a reference to the character and sometimes more generally. Probably worth a disambiguation.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's been three days since the crowner was attached and the consensus to rename is 19:3.

Calling crowner. Let's compile a list of possible new names; maybe an alt names crowner.

she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportWould "Glitch-Created Character" work as an option?
As was mentioned previously, this isn't specific to glitch characters, which is why I previously said I supported the name Glitch Entity (though I think Glitch Character and Glitch Item would be fine as redirects). Glitch items also count. As I previously mentioned, Pokémon Red and Blue, which provided the name The Missingno, have plenty of glitch items in addition to glitch characters. Said glitch items usually don't have sprites, so the name Glitch Sprite — which as previously mentioned (though not by me), sounds like a term for corrupted graphics for non-glitch game elements — doesn't work for them.

Patiently awaiting the release of Paper Luigi and the Marvelous Compass.Honestly, I'm thinking Glitch Item and Glitch Sprite should be their own tropes.
Why? I don't think there's any real distinction...the idea is a glitch creates something that isn't supposed to exist in the game.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHonestly, I think that might make more sense as an overarching concept or a Super-Trope. You might disagree, but I think it would make the most sense to distinguish between "character that only exists because of a glitch", "item that only exists because of a glitch" and "sprite/model that was corrupted by a glitch".
Maybe a soft split? I can see the distinction being interesting and maybe even noteworthy, but it's not a tropeworthy distinction since the "meaning" is still the same.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessHm, a soft-split wouldn't be a bad idea, actually.
I'd like to apologize for all this.Maybe add type labels?
Rock'n'roll never dies! Was that not what WarJay meant by "soft-splitting"?

I'd like to apologize for all this.Attached the alt names crowner.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCalling in favor of Glitch Entity. Glitch Character can be kept as a redirect.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportMove done; description and some non-Trope Namer entries adjusted accordingly.
274 wicks, including 58 from the unmoved redirect. We can leave wicks for Glitch Character alone unless it's used as a trope listing.

The Missingno is frequently misused. Should it be renamed?
Yeah, Glitch Entity is better.
