Wick Check Project

Personally, I don't see a functional difference between "works because of cheesiness" and not "works inspite of cheesiness", but that's just me.

As for the wick checks, I dunno, they're not finished yet and aren't sorted.

Well, finally got the Elemental Powers wick check done. Since I saved a spot for it in the queue, I'll write up an OP.

I put Will They or Won't They? on Tropes Needing TRS, since it has huge problems with zero- or low-context examples (which I noticed while doing the They Do cleanup), but I need some help doing a wick check on it before I can put it in the queue. Is anyone interested?

(For the record, I noticed the same problem myself when I did some of the They Do wick cleaning.)

I saw it. I have a sandbox open at Sandbox.Will They Or Wont They Wick Check; looks like there are 53 examples to check.

One thing I was going to ask before anything gets done—do you have a solution in mind for the ZCE issues? TRS threads now pretty much require them.

(For the record, I could actually see an argument for a rename—a name like Will They or Won't They? seems to come off to me as an inherent pothole/ZCE magnet.)

I hadn't really thought of that, but a rename seems to be the best solution because the name is so Stock Phrase-y. We might be able to merge it with Unresolved Sexual Tension, but I think it may have Pothole Magnet issues itself.

Okay, so far I have 5 ZCE/LCE examples (two of which are on the same page), 4 potholes, and 2 correct examples with plenty of context. 43 wicks to go.

I've run into a few wicks that have more than one example. So far, I've been listing them all, but do I need to?

The wick check is done. I found all of 8 on-page examples that were reasonably correct, and a whole bunch of ZCEs/LCEs and potholes. There's also a few I'm not sure of.

Did you check off-page examples? That's what's required for TRS wick checks.

Yes, those are all off-page examples I found using the Related button.

I think merging to Ship Tease makes more sense bc it's a subtrope of it and not all example have UST between the characters. There's also the option to rename it to Push Pull Teasing or sth instead of merging.

I made a wick check for Narm Charm due to being noted for problems, and I made two categories based on the links in the checks themselves, but I'm unsure of the two. Any suggestions?

That does make more sense. I'll update the wick check (I haven't put it on the queue yet because I keep forgetting to do it ._.)

Stumbled across Googling the New Acquaintance (2012) and Internet Stalking (2021), which don't sound spectacularly different to me. Got Googling The Wick Check going as a result. Both tropes cite the same lyrics of a Garfunkel and Oates song as an example. Otherwise I guess I'll just see how many wicks fit one but not the other...? Unsure. But I think I have something of a case on my hands.

Wait heck maybe they're different enough since one's more of a background check while the other's an obsessive dive. Thoughts?

Eh, their descriptions seem to be anout the same thing.

I'd say "can't be taken seriously but still entertaining"/"comes off as funny than serious but still works" whichever you feel is more accurate.

Its just that, its the only one that seems catogorazable based on the links I put on the wixk check. Any alternatives?

Oh, right, I paid more attention now. I don't think "over-the-top is necessarily cheesy" so that's why I put it in another category. Maybe it can be under the "other" category? Or maybe you're right and the performance was cheesy and it's just mho.

About Will They or Won't They?, I feel like it is also too similar to Unresolved Sexual Tension, at least in practice.
