Unreleased Work Page Cleanup (Speculation, Spoilers, ZCE etc.)

Go To

This is a thread for checking up on pages for works that have not been released yet, to make sure that they are not straying into rampant speculation or posting crazy behind the scenes spoilers. You can bring both individual examples or entire pages to attention here.

In extreme cases, any page can be locked, but hopefully that won't be necessary.

(As these pages often are hit with zero-context examples and shoehorning as well, all four - speculation, spoilers, ZCEs, and shoehorning may get addressed simultaneously.)

The policy governing this effort is Creating A Work Page For An Unreleased Work. Cleanup is being tracked using the Unreleased Works sandbox.

All pages for unreleased works should include a %% comment at the top of the page, confirming the policy and linking to this thread and the Administrivia page. It doesn't have to be exactly the same as the example provided here, but this provides a template to work with.

Template for the unreleased work comment
%%
%% Speculative troping is not allowed on TV Tropes.
%%
%% We trope what DOES happen in works, not what MIGHT happen or is LIKELY to happen.
%%
%% For unreleased works where all we have to go on is advertising and other supplemental materials, we have some detailed guidelines, which can be found at Administrivia/CreatingAWorkPageForAnUnreleasedWork.
%%
%% NOTE - these rules also mean that unreleased works should only have one page image, and that image should NOT be changed again until the work is released.

[up]I know that. It's just sometimes pages are put up hastily but there are 3 tropes to be found, so normally I'd be ok with giving the page a bit of time. But in this case, I don't think there even is 3 tropes yet.

[up] The "logo trailer" is linked in the description, which was shown today. Nothing else aside Jim Carrey returning and Shadow being featured is known. I don't know where "Project Shadow" bit even came from if it's not from Sonic Destruction

I'd like to inquire some things regarding the edit history of VideoGame.Granblue Fantasy Relink. It's likely complicated because it's one of those work pages that existed prior to any guideline being made about Upcoming Works (it was created on December 2018, this Unreleased Work Page Cleanup forum was created on March 2019, so that game's page was "grandfathered" at some point).

  • It was several years ago, but I made sure I added citations on where a trope happens in the pre-release trailers and gameplay footage as of June 2019. I was the one who added most trope examples there prior to this point (such as Cool Sword being added on February 2019).
  • Sometime later, troper HighCrate deleted some entries and hid most of them, including those that I've updated with trailer citations. They've added a note that speculative troping isn't allowed and cited this very cleanup thread... I haven't followed that page for a very long time so I wasn't aware of this edit onwards until now.
  • On March 2021, troper Alphatater deleted the trope examples that were hidden by HighCrate.
  • Now here's the thing, the game finally came out on February 1 of this year, so tropers are free to include more stuff without the strict need for pre-release trailer citations... But would I be at risk of going into an edit war if I would re-add tropes (such as Cool Sword) that were originally added by me, deleted by others, and it turns out that the example's context can still stand in the same way it was originally written (minus the trailer citations, obviously)?

[up] It would still be an edit war, and a deliberate one, unless you get consensus first.

Given the context above (I haven't checked the detail myself, I'm just going by the summary), I'd say adding them back makes sense, but best to wait until a couple of other tropers agree.

Then add back, if people are supportive, citing the thread agreement in edit reason.

Given that this thread is a little quiet and the game is now released, another option would be to post on ATT to build the same sort of consensus, which might be faster.

An option that I thought prior would be to PM either HighCrate or Alphatater for permission if I could add some or most of the examples back under the justification that the trope is still in the final build just as it was in the early pre-release footage.

Unfortunately, both tropers HighCrate and Alphatater don't seem to be active on this wiki anymore as it was several years when they previously made recorded edits. While it's not the first time I'd contest other tropers' edits only to find out they're no longer active here, this forum was the next step that I can think of.

HighCrate is a serial ban evader though and has been bounced repeatedly

A new Crowner has been created to cover the "what counts as a release?" question about Kickstarter/Backerkit style exclusives.

This doesn't cover things like ongoing Patreon support unlocking exclusive songs or early access to webcomics or other episodic works - that's probably the next (final?) question, but it may depend on the consensus for this one.

Welp, Warner Bros. announced that they will be removing the Coyote film from existence after declining the offering from every other company. They basically lied to their fans about releasing a film that was initially shelved for a tax write-off. I genuinely pledge for the downfall of Warner Bros. and Zaslav.

But seriously, I feel bad for the animators and directors who made the project, Eric Bauza for being optimistic about reprising his role for the film, and for fans who had high hopes for it potentially seeing the light of day again. From now on, I am NEVER supporting WB ever again. Awful start to 2024.

I apologize if the previous comment came off as too vindictive. I was too angry about WB's decision to cancel the Coyote film, and while I'm not (and most likely never will) gonna forgive them for that, I feel like my vent comment derailed the current discussion about unreleased works.

[down] Thanks!

To be fair, we have two weeks before the project is deleted. Things could change. Maybe. Keep an eye on the news.

In the previously linked article,

It is speculated that the film could be officially canceled before the company's fourth quarter earnings call, which is scheduled for Feb. 23.

From Film.Deadpool And Wolverine:

  • Fully Absorbed Finale: A variation for the 20th Century Fox X-Men films, which were left hanging thanks to the Disney buyout and reintegration of the IP back into Marvel Studios. Thanks to the aforementioned canon welding bringing Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine into the MCU, this is, for all intents, a quasi-Grand Finale for the original X-Men films and their incarnations of the Mutants.

I commented this out. Should I just cut it completely or leave it?

I think cut since it's speculation at this point.

Cut. Were they really left hanging? I know plans for sequels where scaled back, with Dark Phoenix edited accordingly — but that feels like What Could Have Been.

If the film has a resolution and doesn't abandon the tale mid-trilogy, it doesn't feel like this trope.

There's a(n incomplete) sandbox for a potential Folder Proposal for Unreleased Works by Mrph1 (i.e. each medium is given a separate folder instead of being lumped together into three folders like we currently have). Is it okay if I edit over this?

[down] Okay then! Though I didn't know there was a Crowner for a Folder Proposal.

[up] Sure. Was going to tidy it up and bring it here for a Crowner vote.

Bear in mind that the content's probably already out of date - it was just to get views on the layout and fine-tune it ahead of any decision to redesign the main sandbox (or not).

Bringing this back for a more formal discussion -

The proposal is to move from the current Sandbox model to one that uses folders differently.

  • Currently, we have three folders - one for each category (i.e. release date known, release date unknown, nothing to trope). Each media type gets a heading within each folder.
  • The proposal is to swap this round and use headings for the three categories, then use folders for the media types.

Hopefully that'll make the page shorter on the screen and easier to navigate, especially if a troper's interested in a particular media type.

If we do this, I'd also suggest we take the "grandfather clause" wording out of the 'release date unknown' intro and only show it for the media categories that still have unreleased works under this rule - which, from a quick look, may only be video games?

Do we need a Crowner vote on this? Or, as it's just a sandbox, can we proceed based on less formal feedback?

The proposal is to swap this round and use headings for the three categories, then use folders for the media types.

That makes perfect sense to me; it should make the page a lot easier to navigate.
