Hey tropers, we are working hard on making consistent progress with the wiki and being better about updating everyone with what we are doing. Updates are listed under each staff member that worked on them. Expect to see more frequent updates on this thread moving forward. Please comment below if something was not fixed properly.

     Releases from: 2020
  • We recently discovered that a non-US IP address was hitting us with thousands of SQL injection attempts, none of which succeeded. They did, however, put additional load on the database. This wasn't intended as a DDoS attack per se but rather an attempt to take control of the site.

  • The administrators activated additional security measures on our Cloudflare firewall that have had the unintended side-effect of causing frequent ReCAPTCHA prompts for users. We are aware of this problem and working on a resolution.

     Releases from: 2019
Apr 10th:
  • Improvements to new user registrations and the user experience when suspended or banned. See this post for details.

Mar 21th:

  • The adblocker bug (popup message) will now appear for logged-in users after a certain threshold of page views has occurred while blocking ads.
    • You may snooze the bug for up to 7 days at a time if you have contributed to the wiki (by editing articles) recently.
  • There is now a subscription option to use TV Tropes ad-free for certain periods (monthly, yearly).
    • You can use this link to access the subscription system.
    • Subscriptions use a third-party payment facilitator called Stripe. TV Tropes does not collect or store any of your payment information. You will be rebilled at the indicated interval unless you cancel.
    • Subscriptions are linked to your account. If you change accounts, or are banned, you will lose your subscription.
    • Additional subscription options are being considered or are in development.
    • The badge advertised as a reward for subscribing appears not to be working currently.
    • To unsubscribe, send a message to "The Staff" via our contact form. Additional cancellation options are forthcoming.
  • Users who received one year of ad-free usage as a perk for contributing to the Kickstarter campaign at the 25 USD tier or higher will no longer have that perk. (The 95+ USD lifetime perk is not affected.)

  • Moderators can edit locked articles again.
  • The edit lock icon now appears and performs correctly on all views of an article, not just the primary one.
  • namespace_index.php pagination now works as expected.
  • [Moderation] Moderators can now view substantially more accounts queued for approval, so we shouldn't lose them any more.

Jan 8th:

2. Got rid of bloated 3rd party adblock message and created our own to alert non-members when their adblock is on. To test, visit any two pages, while not logged in with your adblocker on.
== END: RICHARD ==

== CHRIS ==
1. Enable caching system for server - If you are NOT logged-in you'll receive a cached page from the server which can be as old as 3 minutes old. Unless you submit a form then it will bypass the caching system. This should greatly reduce the server load so it doesn't have to dynamically build the page for every pageview millions of times per day. The future versions should cache trope/forum pages for everyone and then rebuild it only when something changes.
2. Remove unused pixels (ie: comscore, retargeting, etc.)
== END: CHRIS ==

== TOM ==
1. Fixed 'Avatar sharing bug' where users were able to share avatars with other users that did not have the 'avatar sharing' feature enabled in their account.

7. Fixed errors in the error log and slow query log.
8. removal of all anti-vandalism page-locking code.
== END TOM ==

Already found the "associate email address" link in Administrivia and entered my address... and just to make sure, the mail you get IS supposed to say "click this link to finish creating your TV Tropes account" just like it presumably would for a newly registrered account?

[up] Yes, that's it.

[up][up] You aren't giving us anything. The payment site is a third-party broker that we get no data from (other than confirmation of your subscription).

[up][up][up] I've explained the difference plenty of times. You don't care to listen, which is fine I guess. Your choice.

I can ask to see if the devs will add PayPal to the subscription options.

So, is there a way to disable the "This is page #(insert number here) you have viewed this month without ads" thing yet or are the mods still working on just that? Because with the number of times it keeps popping up for me, I almost feel like I'm one away from winning a free six-inch sub.

[up][up] Alright, thanks. Mail address verified and yearly pass bought - would have preferred to pay through Paypal but I'm glad to have this option either way.

Also, I see now when I click the "manage subscription" on profile, I just get this popup: "Please contact us here(link to regular contact), to request updates or cancellation of your ad free subscription." Will there also be a way to manage the subscription yourself, for changing sub type or cancelling?

I didn't actually want to set up a recurring subscription, I wanted to buy a single year of ad-free time and decide this time next year whether I want to do it again.

But then, I've never met a subscription model that doesn't work this way, so I'm not that surprised.

^^^ And you, Fighteer, assumed that I'd read every one of those explanations. I haven't read any of them, actually, because I don't come to the forums except to report issues.

But it really doesn't matter, because it doesn't change the material fact that the ads are doing actual harm to your userbase.

Since I have been redirected to the correct topic, I would like to ask again the question I asked earlier, about if a pay for privileges option like discord nitro was considered instead? Things like allowing us to use gifs as avatars, or embed images externally (provided it isn't abused) and the like instead of nagware over something that used to be done for free?

It is a system that I feel would probably go over better with the average user, and I know for a fact that animated avatars ALA discord would get

Frankly, I don't know if the developers are willing to support the coding necessary to make that a reality. It certainly sounds interesting, and we can bring it up as a potential future upgrade. One thing that was suggested that I know is on the table is allowing users who have recently edited the wiki to "snooze" the bug for a period of time, on the theory that contributing to our site helps it grow and attract users and thus carries some value. I don't have an ETA on that.

Those redirect ads are violating the agreement that tvtropes.org has made. We have a pinned thread in the FAQ Forum for users to report violations.

Much like spam/troll accounts that delete or vandalize pages, though, intrusive and/or malicious ads will continue to be created. No practical amount of moderation can stop all of them before anyone sees them. Wiki pages can be reverted, but there's no undo button for someone getting sent to a phishing site, or simply being bothered by flashing advertisements.

...or by constant pop-ups telling you to turn off your adblocker or buy a subscription. I can't claim to know what would convince more people to donate to the site, but I can assure you that using the peskiest type of unwanted web-content to persuade people who installed software specifically to prevent that sort of thing is not a good strategy. Most of them will either modify the software to block the pop-ups, or just use TV Tropes less often, if at all. Irritation doesn't tend to make people feel generous.

Reporting in: I don't use adblock but do use Privacy Badger which blocks some ads as a side effect of blocking trackers (it does not aim to block ads and support any ads that don't suck up user data). This does block ads on TV Tropes (which I don't mind as I too have had a number of bad experiences with bad browser-hijacking ads). For whatever reason I have not seen the ad popups in a good long while (perhaps since the update?).

Nevertheless, I'm glad there's a way to support TV tropes that's an alternative to ads. Thanks for adding that. grin

The "please whitelist us" popup appearing on every fucking page is a serious annoyance. Know Your Meme has a similar "whitelist plz" popup that's way more intrusive (thing takes up practically the entire screen) but much less annoying because it only shows up on some pages.

Maybe some system like "the whitelist popup only shows every 10-15 pages" or "the popup, once dismissed, won't reappear for X minutes" would make it more agreeable.

Also seconding the sentiment that the more insistent a site is that you not block its ads, the shadier and more malware-laden the ads are likely to be.

This place is careless.

The fact the pop-up keeps count per month is what bothers me the most. Am I to assume that I'm going to be locked out if it goes over 1000 or something?

The pop-ups encouraged me to finally whitelist the site. Now I use Privacy Badger on this site to block ads without the pop-ups. :^)

In all seriousness, constant pop-ups to even registered users are absolutely terrible, and it's actually likely to have a detrimental effect. People will either manage to find loopholes or outright leave the site, further cutting into precious revenue.

I like Imca's idea of a Discord Nitro-esque subscription, possibly allowing access to more site themes, GIF avatars, more forum emotes and more. This allows you guys to have another stream of revenue and not annoy your userbase. Seriously, if you don't want your userbase to get cut, then please remove the incessant pop-ups.

And don't even get me started on mobile...

So basically from what I’ve been reading is we either have to buy an ad-free subscription or those who use Adblock are screwed? I’m sorry but all I’m seeing here is discussion after discussion about different advertisement methods on this site rather than any straight answers.

You have to either whitelist the site and see the gigantic distracting ads, pay for an ad-free subscription, or have a banner on every page needling you about how many pages you've viewed with adblock on. It's annoying, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "screwed".

Adding more customisation options to those that spend money on the site is definitely a better option than having harassing pop-ups on every page. Maybe stuff like letting paying users customise the colours of their screen (kind of like how we have a night vision mode we could have a red vision mode and so on) or custom fonts for forum posts or something. Cosmetic DLC is really really big so there will be a whole bunch of people that would spend money to get little things.

This kind of reminds me of The Sims Resource - a site known for its truly horrendous advertising (we're talking autoplaying ads, pop-ups, pages that took ages to load because of the sheer number of ads on each page, etc). The site implemented a pop-up that delayed any mod downloads if you were using an ad-blocker, and it was so annoying that not long after this was implemented a browser ad-on (TSR Ad Skipper) was created that was specifically designed to bypass this pop-up. This was a very long winded way of saying that if the calls to whitelist the site are too obtrusive then users will try and get around it using new ad-blockers (hello Privacy Badger) rather than pay simply out of spite.

So I disabled my Ad Block and the result was ads lagging the hell out of any TV tropes page I entered. I'm sorry but to be completely frank all this is doing is pissing off people who either don't have the money to pay the ad-free subscription or shouldn't even have to because why should they pay a monthly/yearly fee when a simple browser extension could remove ads for free? I get it that the site needs money to run but constantly bombarding your users with the "go ad-free subscription"? You guys shot yourselves in the foot here and its doing way more harm than good.

Seconded. I personally have a policy of blacklisting any site with unskippable and undismissable anti-adblock measures like RockPaperShotgun because I'm against ads on principle, so asking me to disable my adblock is pointless because I'm not going to click on any ads anyway, so whining that you aren't profiting off of me is a waste of both of our time.

You have to either whitelist the site and see the gigantic distracting ads, pay for an ad-free subscription, or have a banner on every page needling you about how many pages you've viewed with adblock on. It's annoying, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "screwed".
Yeah, I wouldn't say they screwed. That's reserved for mobile users who have to either buy ad-free or be stuck with frequent malicious redirect ads.

I'm gonna add to this.

I've been trying to get Firefox to show ads on TV Tropes, but all it does is prevent the ads from showing and as a result the pop-up keeps appearing on the screen. Even after disabling uBlock, even after uninstalling it, the stupid pop-up keeps appearing. If it doesn't manage to show up then there's gotta be something wrong with it, and the admins should address this issue. If not, I'm just gonna stick to using mobile if problems still arise with desktop.
