I kind of rolled my eyes at Todo showing up suddenly after years of radio silence, but this new Boogie Woogie method is so incredible that it completely justifies his participation.

That cliffhanger has gotta be a fakeout. I don't believe it.

Almost loved this chapter. The Boogie Woogie fight choreography is perfect as it always is. But then the chapter chooses to end at the worst cliffhanger possible. This is going to suck if it's a fake out and suck so much harder if it's a true resurrection. I can't see any winning chance for Akutami here.

[up] From a storytelling perspective it would completely incongruous to bring Gojo back after his big death scene and reunion with his departed friends in the afterlife, so I doubt it's him.

Also, I don't know if anyone else has noticed but the character page for those two Geto minions (Manami Suda and Toshihisa Negi) says that Larue says that they didn't make it out Shibuya?? What. That's not said at all. At best it's maybe implied.

Glad I'm not the only one hoping this is a fakeout. Though I'm not really worried it could be real. My mind immediately went to that time that Sasuke genjutused Danzo into seeing Itachi. Same kind of cheapish tactic, I'd imagine.

I think the likeliest idea is that Sukuna is starting to tip-toe on Death's Door and Gojo's spirit is waiting for him on the other side.

So, I decided to pick up the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Character Guide on a whim at Target today, and seeing some of the things Gege put in it are... interesting to say the least. Here are some of the ones I found worth mentioning here from the first half of the book:
DISCLAIMER: The book only officially covers details up to the end of Shibuya, so don't expect anything past that.

    Students
  • Yuji Itadori:
    • Had Yuji tried to consume the Death Paintings before Sukuna left him, then he would have only gained the cursed energy they held, everything else wouldn't have been erased by Sukuna.
    • Yuji has little formal combat training, but his grandfather did teach him a bit of karate.
    • Turns out Yuji never even carried a cellphone until going to Jujutsu Tech, so while he does keep contact with his old friends from before the series, Gege is leaving up to our imagination how he does so.
    • Gege apparently has a certain "distate" for Yuji. That's not to say he "hates" him, but rather he feels as if he's still sculpting the character and isn't content with him yet.
    • Contrary to what he believed, Yuji was very popular with the girls in school, it's just they had a case of Can't Spit It Out, and Yuji is dense as fucking hell. Hell, Yuko's asking for a picture he saw as an innocuous favor. -_-
  • Megumi Fushigoro:
    • This dork is apparently very awkward with romance, since it's said if someone were to confess to him, his response would be "I'm sorrrrrrrrrrrrrry!"
    • Part of his Bully Hunter background had him apparently hang a bunch of bullies off a billboard.
    • The only reason he doesn't respect Toge is because of how quick he is to join Panda or Gojo in pranks.
  • Nobara Kugisaki:
    • Turns out her grandmother was against her joining Jujutsu Tech, moreso because she wanted to keep training Nobara personally.
    • Gege finds her the easiest to write for of the Power Trio.
    • The heart on her first hammer was something she engraved on it herself when she was seven. She finds it embarrassing now, but was stuck with it.
  • Yuta Okkotsu:
    • The reason for Okkotsu's new haircut in the main series is similar to that for Toge: Gege found his old haircut too similar to Megumi's and made him more distinct.
    • Yuta being a Sorcerer at all isn't just because he's a descendent of the Suguwara, since none of the other Okkotsu's have the potential to be Sorcerers. Rather, Yuta is a case of "atavism", giving him solely distinctive traits of the Suguwara.
    • After Rika's spirit was released, he was briefly demoted down to Grade 4. By time of the main series, he's worked his way back to Special Grade all on his own.
    • Like Yuji was with Sukuna, Yuta and Rika were considered a possible threat by Gakuganji. Unlike them however, Gakuganji decided to wait a bit more to gain a feel for how Rika worked, with Rika being released before Gakuganji could make a decision.
  • Toge Inumaki:
    • The Inumaki family have been trying to purge themselves of Jujutsu Sorcerers for some time now due to their "outlaw" status. Toge is a case of one still being born anyway despite their efforts.
  • Maki Zen'in:
    • Even here Gege was hinting about how Maki would become the next Toji, and how it would require her to sacrifice something...
  • Panda:
    • His entire conception was to be Comic Relief.
    • In the event a normal person sees him, he immediately pretends to be a stuffed animal and forces someone with him to carry him.
    • He does not need to poop. Yaga put diapers on him when he was a baby solely due to thinking it looked cute.
  • Mai Zen'in:
    • He mentions wanting to make her use a Sniper Rifle "soon", but that obviously never happened, so I'm wondering if his plans for her changed.
    • Gege doesn't give a definitive answer to who her "first love" was. He said Megumi is the most likely, second would be a stranger, and Maki would be the dark horse option.
  • Kasumi Miwa:
    • Her conception was to be the "normal person" in a cast of crazies.
    • Kusakabe scouted her while she was illegally working a part time job in Middle School, his main reasons being her ability to see curses... and her hair.
  • Kokichi Muta:
    • He's pretty much been a ward of Jujutsu Tech since he was young thanks to his Heavenly Restriction, and never had a choice in becoming a Sorcerer.
    • He's not from a Sorcerer family, he was just unlucky enough to be born with a Heavenly Restriction. His parents actually thought he was dead long before the series, Kokichi himself wanting them to think he died, I'm guessing to spare them the pain of his circumstances.
  • Noritoshi Kamo:
    • Turns out the reason why Todo is disappointed in him is because, when he asked his type of woman, Noritoshi just ignored him, prompting Todo to literally kick his ass.
    • As heir of the Kamo clan, he didn't need to attend Jujutsu Tech, but he did so anyway to (1) Prove himself to the clan and the world, (2) Please his mother.
  • Aoi Todo:
    • His conception was Gege wanting to make his own version of Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach, having felt Gojo didn't fit the bill.
    • He got his scar while training under Yuki, her training noted to be "reckless and grueling".
    • His idolization of Takada is to the point he wants to go out with her, and is pissed about the rule forbidding idols from dating. He showers before every meet, acts like a proud boyfriend watching from backstage, etc.
  • Momo Nishimiya:
    • She's a rare case of a non-Japanese Jujutsu Sorcerer lineage, as her father is a Jujutsu Sorcerer but is American.
    • She cares about her junior females a lot, and it's noted that had Nobara gone to Kyoto rather than Tokyo, Momo would have likely grown fond of her too.
    Sorcerers
  • Satoru Gojo:
    • His conception was to be the ceiling the characters had to face in the series.
    • It's noted that, even in the present, his beliefs regarding the "weak" are the same as the Hidden Inventory arc, he just masks them by trying to follow Geto's old beliefs. Gege outright states Gojo hasn't "grown", it's just he is more trying to use the old Geto as his moral compass rather than follow his personal beliefs still.
  • Yoshinobu Gakugangi:
    • Visually, he was designed to be a fusion of Isaac Netero from Hunter Γ— Hunter and Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto from Bleach.
  • Masamichi Yaga:
    • His treatment of Yuji was an exception to how he normally treats enrolled students. Normally he only asks the questions he did after they enroll, but reversed it for Yuji due to his seeming death wish.
  • Atsuya Kusakabe:
    • His penchant for lollipops is because he's a former smoker still trying to quit.
  • Utahime Iori:
    • She and Gojo pretty much annoyed each other from Day 1, their personalities like oil and water. She was someone who cared about "respecting ones seniors", he was just "who gives a fuck" in general, and started messing with her relentlessly shortly after. However, he fails to realize she legitimately dislikes him, just thinking her reactions are her way of joking.
    • She's Loved by All amongst the Kyoto students.
  • Shoko Ieiri
    • She was created because of Gege's fondness for Dr. House. Design-wise, she was made as a mix of Yuta and Rika.
    • Her only thoughts on Geto following his Madden Into Misanthropy basically amounted to "He's an idiot".
    • While she's not the only one who can use Cursed Technique Reversal, she's so valued because she is one of the only three people who use it on others, the other two being Yuta and Sukuna.
  • Kiyotaka Ijichi:
    • His design was based on the drummer for the band "Asian Kung-Fu Generation", Kiyoshi Ijichi.
    • If actually forced to fight, he'd be a Grade 3 Sorcerer.
  • Naobito Zen'in:
    • Apparently, the main basis behind his design was "Salvadore Dali moustache"...
    • He's apparently a big fan of anime, more specifically making anime.
    • The reason he never really helped out prior to Shibuya is because (1) He's on bad terms with the Gojo family, (2) He doesn't particularly care for avoiding civilian casualties.
    • He was chosen to lead the Zen'in's over Toji because of his raw strength, compared to Toji seemingly requiring Cursed Tools to be as strong.
  • Kento Nanami:
    • Design wise, he was based on the general idea of "corporate dropouts", and was originally envisioned as an antagonist.
    • He doesn't blame Geto for being Madden Into Misanthropy.
    • His death was something Gege thought of as far back as when he started thinking about the Shibuya Incident, as while he likes Nanami and finds him easy to write for, he felt Shibuya was the place best suited for his role in the story.
  • Mei Mei & Ui Ui:
    • "Mei Mei" is actually an alias, her real name is unknown.
    • Seems her little brother complex is actually reciprocated. Ui Ui has a Binding Vow in place for his Cursed Technique, specifically requiring Mei Mei order him to use it, all because he wants to be her "property". I don't know what's worse: the idea that Mei Mei groomed him to be like this, or the idea he's naturally like this.
  • Yuki Tsukumo:
    • The only reason Jujutsu Tech hasn't fired her is because she's a Special Grade, so they settle for just putting a hold on her paychecks.
    Geto Family
  • Suguru Geto:
    • While Geto did pick up the whole "Monkey" thing from Toji, he was explicitly unconscious already by that point, so Gege claims it was a case of "sleep learning".
    • He didn't actually come to genuinely hate non-Sorcerers, rather he kept telling himself that repeatedly, presumably due to the PTSD from losing Riko and facing Toji, until he eventually convinced himself it was the truth.
    • It's reaffirmed that, when Geto's arm strangled Kenjaku briefly in Shibuya, it was just a case of post-mortem spasm.
  • Mimiko and Nanako Hasaba:
    • Geto was essentially their adoptive father after he saved them, the two occasionally calling him "Geto Papa".
  • Manami Suda and Larue:
    • Their initial reasoning for joining Geto was actually shallow, namely they just found him to be an attractive man.
  • Toshihisa Negi:
    • While not elaborated on, it's noted his reasoning for joining Geto is the same as the Hasaba Twins, suggesting Geto saved his life from non-Sorcerers at some point and he gained Undying Loyalty.
    • He's apparently not that strong.
    Kenjaku's Group
  • Kenjaku:
    • The stitches on his head are a result of a Binding Vow.
    • It's noted that he could have taken Toji as a host, but it would've come with the risk of his Heavenly Restriction clashing with his own Cursed Technique and causing him to glitch out.
  • Granny Ogami:
    • Her "grandson" is just one of many kids she kidnapped and groomed into being her obedient followers.
  • Disaster Curses:
    • Kenjaku first reached out to Jogo, and it was through him he met Hanami, Mahito, and Dagon.
    • Hanami is less a genuine Cursed Spirit and more like a Cursed Nature Spirit, with "Cursed Spirits" being the "family" and "Nature Spirits" being the Genus. It's because of this Gege describes Hanami as the "kindest" of the Cursed Spirits.
    • Hanami is aware that there are humans who are kind to nature, but is of the belief that nature can only full restore itself if all of humanity dies. Gege says he was inspired by Dr. STONE for that detail.
  • Grasshopper Curse:
    • Mahito is the one who dragged it to Shibuya, naming it "Grasshopper Guy".
    Others
  • Toji Fushigoro:
    • It's established that a lot of his behavior is from him having genuinely gone insane.
    • The scar on his lip came from when the Zen'in's tossed him into the compound filled with Cursed Spirits.
    • Meeting and falling in love with Megumi's mother actually calmed him down and eased the pain of the Zen'in's abuse of him, but he ended up snapping after she died shortly after Megumi was born.
    • Had he no killed himself in Shibuya, it's possible he would have stayed alive, but he was in a glitched state anyway so Gege can't say for certain. He personally sees the Toji in the Shibuya Incident as not the same Toji having come Back from the Dead, but instead just something that possessed Toji's information.
  • Junpei and Nagi Yoshino:
    • Mr. Yoshino is still alive, he's just not involved in their lives due to having long divorced Nagi.
    • Apparently, there were a lot of unseen victims in Junpei's attack on his school, and Jujutsu Tech saw him as the prime perpetrator rather than as a manipulated pawn of Mahito, so they had little care for coming up with a plausible excuse for his and Nagi's deaths, just coming up with the slapdash "he moved" excuse uncaring of the details, nor did they both informing the relatives.
    • While Nagi had an idea Junpei was being bullied, hence her letting him skip school, she never knew the full extent, largely due to Junpei hiding it from her.
  • Rika Orimoto: (This one gets weird)
    • Rika killed both her parents before entering elementary school, her father in particular she had gone on a mountain trip with, only for both to go missing but only her being found at a shelter on the mountain. Her grandmother took her in, but while Rika could manipulate others into seeing her as innocent, her grandmother was fully aware Rika killed her parents, causing Rika to hate her grandmother.
    • "Rika" the Cursed Spirit is not the same as the original Rika, she just housed the soul of the original Rika. The original Rika is described as being in a trance the entire time she was inside the spirit, "like she was in a dream" where she only looked at Yuta.
    • She was kind to Yuta's little sister, but only for the sake of being close to Yuta.
  • Wasuke Itadori:
    • His cause of death is stated to be Lung Cancer, Gege saying he was likely a heavy smoker in his youth.
  • Setsuko Sasaki and Takeshi Iguchi:
    • While the Cursed Spirit Megumi spotted hinted at, Sasaki was right on the money as to the real reason the Rugby team got ill.
    • Following Yuji's departure, the Occult Research Club was forced to disband due to lack of members.

[up] Mai actually does use a sniper rifle towards the tail end of the Shibuya Incident. When the others are ganging up on Kenjaku she tries to blow his head off from a distance but he quickly and easily summons this squid-like (??) spirit to absorb the round.

Some pretty interesting stuff in that book, particularly about Rika secretly being an enfant terrible.

Also unless there's another profile that Rebel found somewhere else it never says that she was only kind to his sister for the sake of being close to him, just that she was and then became very aggressive towards everyone that came near Yuta with a special distaste for girls and older guys. Girls is pretty self explanatory but the older guys thing has raised a few eyebrows and made people wonder if her dad abused her.

[up]there's a lot in Rika's profile that makes her seem weird as hell without the need of spreading around misinformation

@Mami Because the section is literally titled "Rika killed both her parents"

The book seems to be quoting chunks of the original profile more so than anything (especially since every other highlighted section follows suit), it doesn't really add anymore proof that she had anything to do with her parents death from the blurbs or Gege's interviews but it does clarify the older dude's and sister bit so I'll apologize for that one.

[up]x2 Yeah Rika had a traffic accident that Yuta was unfortunate enough to be a witness for. Not sure I'd say running over a child with a car is a benefit for humanity especially when the result of that is her turning into Yuta's trauma for the next decade.

Okkotsu being fine with being a monster feels right for him since his power source is loving his monster wife. It's just a shame that this wasn't the argument he was making in the discussion. Also, this week's strategy meeting flashback feels a bit off with the moment Okkotsu was desperate to intervene before Gojou lost. Maybe? I'd have to reread that part. That said, the only really big problem with the chapter is Akutami going "Hold on, Sukuna and Gojou haven't clashed domains enough times".

[up] Maki outright told Yuta not to go because they would lose their insurance. He just hoped they could avoid this precise scenario by intervening. Also i donΒ΄t like Yuta using Infinite Void. Domains are supposed to expand the users inner Domain, makes no sense that aspect would change by bodyhoping.

Sukuna's biggest advantage is his Domain. If they can't surpass that, then no matter how hard they try Sukuna will always be able to turn the tables on them.

Narratively, Domains represent the ever evolving peak of Jujutsu so Yuta putting whatever solution to the unclosed barrier into play is proof of the cast evolving past him.

Also neatly mirrors Sukuna using Mahoraga's adaptation model to evolve his technique to beat Gojo
