1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

This seems to be a known issue, but "remember me" isn't working for me on either Firefox on Windows 10 or iOS Safari. I have the box checked, but I still have to log in every time I start up my browser.

It's also worth mentioning that the link in the "new overhaul" bulletin is broken. Don't know if that's been mentioned already.

Another display problem summary post:

  • Folders
  • Quote spacing
  • Quote indents. Quote indents in particular all display the same no matter what their actual indentation is, which in many cases makes quoted lines weirdly off to the left instead of properly indented under their example.
  • Bullet indents. Indentation on second-tier bullet points looks wrong. Rather than there being a separate column for the white bullet point, the text simply wraps around as if the bullet were part of the paragraph. It's hard to explain it with words, but it looks ugly.
    • (worded another way): IIRC, second-level bullets are supposed to indent the lines past the first one, Check the last entry of the page's Color Coded Item Tiers. It looks as if the last bullet forms a new paragraph. If the first-level bullets can wrap paragraphs properly, then it should also apply to the inner bullets. Of all the formatting changes, this is the most jarring one IMO.
  • Bullet spacing
  • Image sizes, with borders
  • No spoiler toggle on the sidebar (very serious; the toggle basically ended years of spoiler debates)
  • Line breaks don't work properly
  • Weird alphabetization on related pages
  • Note tags are plain text
  • (mobile Chrome) the first few options on the main menu are gargantuan and take up about an eighth of the screen each
  • The arrows you press to navigate a thread only appear at the bottom of the page (previously they appeared at the top as well).
  • Forum posts are no longer numbered.
  • The number of the last page on a given forum thread no longer shows up.
  • Indentation of numbered bullets is inconsistent with regular ones, and how much indentation there is seems to depend on a number of factors, including:
    1. The nested level of the numbers (#, ##, or ###)
    2. Whether a second-level list is under a first-level number or a regular bullet
    3. Whether the list is inside a folder or not.
  • The before and after boxes in History are way to near each other, some text I've seen also goes outside the box as well, they need to be expanded a bit.
  • (Firefox) Cursor disappears in text box for PMs and editing.
  • (Firefox) Using the find function (CTRL+F) on a page with folders will find text inside the folders even if they are closed, making it difficult to find anything.
  • Another display issue found: when Night Vision is turned on, the white text and light bars for "Header" and "WMG" headings, as well as newly posted forum comments I've made, make them practically unreadable.
  • I also find the massive editing space unwieldy, as it requires scrolling through two spaces, with the editing bar getting in the way now that it's laying directly over where I'm trying to type.
  • The last entry of a bulleted list has little spacing compared to the rest, while in the source code, there is a line break. I guess a second level heading (!!) has something to do with it. (Win 10/Chrome)
  • Check the Quotes tab, first level ("Songs") and second level ("English Vocals") headings have the exact same text formatting. (Granblue Fantasy, Win 10/Chrome)
  • The WMG Headings are now in plain text format (same size as the normal text, and no longer in bold) (Win 10/Chrome)
  • For some reason, in here, the "open / close all folders" control appears in the middle of the page, just beside the sixth folder. (Win 10/Chrome)
  • A lot of the images used in the Character pages became smaller. (Win 10/Chrome)
  • Quoteblocks are italicized, which serves no purpose except to make impossible to italicize quoted text.
  • On forum search results, the titles are way oversized, they could stand being a smaller font to make the search results a bit better searchable.
  • The followed threads page has a lot of unneccesary white space, something that seems to be a general design feature now.
  • Dunno if its been brought up before but some of the drop down selections, like opening the relationship status in the profile section, appear as a white box with pale pink text that's impossible to see. It makes it hard to select things. Same thing happens when a new post is first made.
  • The blue highlight for a new post overrides mod hat red.
  • Can't holler your own post.

Anything else? And try to include your browser and OS.

Watchlist is still worse than it was before. It still hurts the eyes, still hard to work out at a glance who has updated what.

Got logged out for the third time while just browsing the site. It's really annoying, especially as it keeps auto-suggesting my previous handle. That's nothing to do with the update, its just more annoying now than before.

As someone who mainly uses Safari via a mobile device (phone or tablet) to access the Internet, whenever I click on "mark all as read", it... does not mark all as read, if you catch my drift.

Also, I may might've already said this before, but just in case you might've missed it: I found that it was much easier for me to navigate through a forum thread when the page numbers where just there for me to click on, and I didn't have to type in a specific page number just to find what I wanted to Archive Binge or not. Hope that makes sense to y'all.

Am not quite sure I it wasn't mentioned yet or I overread it in the list, but the contrast in the Night Vision tends to be very bad in general. On the Fanfic Rec sides the headlines of the sections are white on light blue and not to make out at all. And the button to show all spoilers are gone. Was that intentionally or did it just got moved around?

~Discar Subscript and superscript formatting ( [[subscript:text]] and [[superscript:text]]) are broken in general, not just notes & labelnotes. All three work properly inside folders, but are displayed as plaintext anywhere else. See Wiki Sandbox#Notability and the section below it for examples.

The "Show Spoilers" button has been relocalized to your profile instead.

It was already there, and it was added to the sidebar a few years ago. I really can't emphasize this enough, but having the spoiler toggle there ended years of arguments over spoiler policy.

Back with another issue.

This is more of a nitpick rather, but I feel it's worth mentioning. When I went to my profile to turn on "Show Spoilers" it said below my username that I had been a member since April 4, 2012, when, in reality, I didn't join this site until June or July of 2014.

The reason why I bring this up is because previously when the update was launched I was somehow logged in as another user, and had to log out twice before I could log in as myself and this might be a side effect of the same bug.

How to revert entire overhaul and get nice-looking, user-friendly tvtropes?

"Lefthand sidebar" took place of "reveal spoilers", and I do not see "reveal spoilers" option at all now.

And everything got uglier, more modern look.

We all know that tensions are understandably high and tempers are running hot, but there’s a line between venting and personal attacks and crossing that line will earn thumps. Keep it civil or take your hands off the keyboard/screen.

With regards to the Character pages not displaying all tropes, I can offer what I believe is another example:

This CMoF page.

Aside from being edit-locked, if you open a folder you'll note that not all lines are displayed. It seems there's a maximum length allowed on these folders, which is likely what's hitting on Character pages as well.

Has it been mentioned that on the forums, at least on Chrome, you can no longer go straight to the first unread post? That makes it incredibly difficult to keep track of conversations.

@Ferot Dreadnaught: That's an ancient bug that goes back to the Eddie days. There were some attempts to fix it back then as well, which failed presumably because it's too deep rooted in the codebase.

Omega Metroid: Something for the next buglist, then. For the sake of chronology I am going to do this in big batches.

Sapphire Blue: The bulletin issue has been mentioned, yes, just that I've picked a non-obvious descriptor. The login issue is on the admins' list, too.

Discar: I think some issues of that list are already on ours.

I'm adding this image as a format weirdness; I honestly can't remember if this was an issue in the previous format, but the spoiler leading to the bracket opening in the previous line, while the spoiler itself is only beginning in the next line. (Also, I blackened the spoiler itself because... you know, no show spoilers option on the side bar.)
