1.8 overhaul or why did the site just change on me?

Go To

We've just pushed a large overhaul public. Please report complaints, comments and concerns here. When reporting bugs, please make sure you include which browser(s) and platform(s) you have encountered the issue with.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why did we do this? This update has been in development for over a year. It replaces a vast amount of messy code on the back-end, gives us a new modernized design, updates us to https, and creates a platform that we can more easily build on for future updates.
  • Can we go back to the old design? This isn't happening. We'll make the new one work.
  • Why are there so many bugs? As with any major overhaul, some problems will occur. The developers are working full-time on fixing stuff.

Frequently Reported Issues

This isn't everything, just the most common problems.

Status Values

    General Site Issues
  • Being logged in as someone else, sort of. [FIXED]
  • Where'd the "Folders Open" toggle go? Not a bug, it's in your profile.
  • Multiple issues with the new site search feature. [Logged]
    • No sorting options.
    • Forum poster search is gone. [FIXED]
    • Can't search specifically by thread title, making results unhelpful.
    • Pagination doesn't work correctly — the last page displays as if there were no search results.
  • Line breaks don't work in some areas. (Ask The Tropers, Trope Launch Pad, forum previews) [Patched]
    • ATT, TLP, forum previews fixed. Some more line breaking issues were identified and are being worked on.
  • The Cut List does not work.
    • Cannot approve or deny requests. [FIXED]
    • Line breaks don't work. [FIXED]
    • Cut request reasons don't appear. [FIXED]
    • Additional cutlist issues noted here.
  • Note, subscript, and superscript formatting are broken in various places. [FIXED]
  • Night vision has significant readability problems. [Patched]
  • Namespace index is broken. [Logged]

    Wiki Issues
  • Articles may become locked when edited, or when backing out of editing without clicking Cancel. Moderators can remove the locks but can't fix the underlying problem. [Patched]
    • Remaining issue: the lock system still doesn't distinguish between an article that's locked and one that's checked out for editing.
  • Edits won't save when "<" or ">" characters are present in the markup. [Patched]
    • HTML detection was disabled for the time being. We're working on a more robust system.
  • Edits won't save when the [norreallife] tag is present in the markup. [FIXED]
  • Redirects are broken. [Patched]
    • This is at least partially fixed. We need to know if there are any remaining problems.
  • Indexing is broken. [In Progress]
  • Images on wiki articles are rendered smaller than in the previous design. [Patched]
    • Resizing images with [quoteright] tags is still broken.
  • The "Following" list (formerly called the Watchlist) doesn't distinguish visually between viewed and unviewed articles. [In Progress]
  • Custom titles are no longer appearing in all places where they should. [FIXED]
  • In-line icons for Flame Bait, Trivia, and YMMV wicks are intended, but sometimes overlap preceding text. [Patched]
    • Trivia icons should not appear in-line. (Design issue, logged)
    • In second-level bullets, icons overlap preceding text. [Logged]
  • The [invoked] tag no longer suppresses the aforementioned icons. [Logged]

    Forum Issues
  • [quoteblock] markup causes everything inside to appear italic and squashed together. [FIXED]
  • Line breaking for external links doesn't work correctly. [FIXED]
  • Post numbering is no longer visible, although you can retrieve it from the hard-link. [Logged]
  • "Delete all posts by user" mod feature now causes posts to be completely hidden instead of replaced with "Troll Post". [Logged]
  • "Mark all as read" forum feature doesn't work. [Logged]
  • "Save Draft" feature doesn't work as expected. [Logged]
  • Forum post preview doesn't show all markup. [FIXED]
  • Unread indicators on individual forums (topics.php) seem to have nothing to do with whether you actually have any unread posts. [Logged]

    Miscellaneous
  • Avatar upload is broken. [In Progress]
  • Avatar galleries aren't formatted properly. [Logged]
  • Crowners are broken. [Logged]
  • Namespace configurator (mod tool) is missing some auto page type options, and the namespace locking feature doesn't work. [Logged]

Just want to point out that SeptimusHeap's fourth compilation of reported problems includes my report that the Edit button is missing from History pages, but not the one that line breaks made with backslashes at the end of a line are broken, which I would like to assume is the bigger issue of the two.

My apologies if this is redundant, but here is why I keep repeating what I say like a malfunctioning computer:

Everything else has been said. Every bug, every glitch, every problem. The only thing I can really say at this point is, "Can you change it back?"

If you disagree, that's fine. I will now melt back into the floor and pretend I don't exist and am definitely not secretly reading this thread.

Peace out, peeps.

It's not only the spoilers button that doesn't work for me. The "show folders" button also does not work on Internet Explorer. Does Tv Tropes no longer work on IE?

Satoshi: There's a difference between enough money to support the site and enough to make a profit from. For Eddie, this was a personal project; for the new guys, it's a source of revenue.

@BlueDogXL: Actually, yes. To explain, I am using an Amazon Fire tablet on Silk browser, viewing this tab on mobile view in portrait orientation.

It's on the sidebar.

...The HUGE-ASS sidebar.

Meanwhile it can be found elsewhere, in when you're editing your profile.

I finally was able to log on... In Internet Explorer. I could not log in on Google Chrome, and the site is completely broken over there. It looks like this.

I don't want to use IE, or any other Internet explorer, to use this site; I want to use Chrome.

I don't know if this has been reported before, but it seems that the Related page does not reflect wicks added after the update.

For example, my first trope-page edit post-update was adding to Portmantitle an example in Manga.Harukana Receive, yet after that the latter page's Related page does not show up a wick for Portmantitle (nor the Height Angst I added even later), keeping at the 6 wicks it has pre-update.

@DingoWalley1: Looks fine here, on my tablet with an autocorrect function can't distinguish "on" from "in".

EDIT: Vegeta, what does the scouter say about the crowner upvote count?

@Dingo Walley 1 That's...really weird. It's the exact opposite situation for me. The display buttons on my profile don't work even when they're flicked on. But this only happens on Internet Explorer, not Chrome.

[up][up][up][up] Yeah, I had that problem for hours, but suddenly Chrome just... started working again.

I think it was after I erased my cookies that it started working. I'm not sure if that is actually what caused it or not, but not too long before I did that I had looked and the site was like that.

To specify on the spoilers sitch, Show Spoilers is on in my profile settings, every spoiler is visible... But the mobile sidebar says it's switched off. Actually, every switcher on the doesn't work, visually. Functionally, it prolly works fine.

The site's formatting is still broken on Chrome on a 2016 ASUS ROG laptop running Windows 10. Clearing my cookies did not fix this. The login button is still non-functional.

Firefox on that same laptop does not experience these errors.

The desktop sidebar doesn't display the spoiler option at all. Why is it on the mobile but not desktop? (Or is it just me somehow)

These are on the most recent version of Firefox:

  • The preview button on the edit page doesn't work; nothing pops up, even with the option to block pop-ups in my browser definitely off.
  • Trying to go back and fix an edit shows a locked page; if this is a feature to keep people from spamming edits, fair enough, but when the preview page is also broken, it makes it a pain to go back and try to fix errors. It also shows up if you click the edit button on a page to, say, check the formatting of the work-up language, but don't actually change or save the article.
  • Footnote links are showing up as the same size text as the regular article text. It looks odd as anything.

I've been using chrome since the start with no issues with the site displaying. Still have basically all the other issues though. It's telling how badly coded this update is when the site breaks differently for people with the same setup.

The spacing for numbered bullets (made using # instead of *) is now inconsistent. A list of only numbered bullets is indented less than a list of regular bullets, but second-level numbered bullets under a regular bullet are indented more than regular second-level bullets. See Sandbox.Herald Alberich for an example.

Edit: Looking at it further, first-level bullets are fine, but second- and third-level are wonky. A second-level number under a first-level regular bullet is indented as much as a third-level number under other numbers.

In the interests of being at least semi-helpful, I'm on Vivaldi 1.15 and have been able to log in fine. Haven't cleared my cookies or needed to. The site is functional for me, just ugly as sin.

Agreeing with @tentacles42 that my biggest gripe with the new format is the really tiny folder headers. The knockoff Facebook look I could eventually swallow, but these itty bitty folders are just the worst. I presume they've been optimized for tablet viewing, but those of us on desktops practically need to use the zoom feature to see them.

After I made an edit, all the content on Author Existence Failure disappeared after I pressed save. But it's all still there when I click edit again. Very strange.
