[up]I wouldn’t say Mystery Incorporated deviate a lot from the Scooby Doo formula as it retain the premise of 4 teenagers and a dog solving mysteries involving a monster of the week, and while its indeed darker from the previous entries its not really completely serious as there are lots of moments of levity in that show which the franchise have been known for.

I think the only two SD shows that deviated a lot from the formula are The 13 Ghose of Scooby-Doo and Shaggy & Scooby Get A Clue. The former is at best a base breaker of a show, but the latter (which REALLY deviates) is best left forgotten like all the other mid to late 2000s Kids WB shows (save for Legion of Super-Heroes, that is worth remembering).

[up][up] I read the execs of the Scooby show that followed it (I forget which one) didn't really like it and put in Take Thats where they could.

[up][up] What he said. Mystery Inc. Flanderizes the characters a good bit, but otherwise, outside of having a central series arc, it's just a slightly darker take on the original premise. The ones that really break form are the much-despised Scrappy Doo series, where the gang is gone and only Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy remain. There was at least one Scooby, Scrappy, and Shaggy series where they weren't even solving mysteries, really; they'd get some kind of job, a monster'd show up, and they'd all chase each other around for 7 minutes (to be fair, if you're going to limit the central cast this way and stay true to the characters, this is really all you could do; Scooby and Shaggy by themselves would not go out of their way to solve mysteries).

Thirteen Ghosts was definitely an interesting experiment, but it spent a long time being fairly poorly regarded (it's reputation seems to have improved somewhat in recent years). I think it could have worked fine if they'd dispensed with Flim Flam and just had the classic gang running all over the world for Vincent Price (or whatever he was calling himself).

[up] Yeah, the whole premise of 13 Ghost was in itself interesting with the whole concept of Scooby-Doo facing off against real monsters; which is kind of part of the reason for its base breaker status as the idea of these ghosts, monsters and aliens being real kind of contradicts the Scooby Doo formula we all know and love. Though than again some of the more well liked Scooby Doo works does incorporate creatures that are actually real; namly the 80s television films (Boo Brothers, Ghoul School, Relunctant Werewolf), the 90s direct to video films (Zombie Island, Witches’ Ghost, Alien Invaders, Cyber Chase), Mystery Incorporated (the main villain of said show is an Eldrtich Abomination) and even the original Scooby-Doo show is guilty of it (namly with Charlie The Robot).

So yeah agree with you that if the show were to keep Vincent van Ghoul (the beat part of the show) and get rid of Flim Flam (the worst part who makes even Scrappy Doo look great), it would of been remembered more fondly.

I hope it has the classic and doesn't try to deviate into a more Super-Deformed Thin-Line Animation style akin to other CN retools... or the last Scooby Doo incarnation.

I think we'll be fine seeing how they did the same classic style with the Super Natural crossover, but I could care less about what style it's in, as long as it is more clever and brain teasing than the last.

[up]x2: Can't really promise anything on the final product, but Dave Alvarez recently posted a tweet about doing some storyboards for Guess Who. note  Whenever he works on Scooby Doo-related comics, he tends to match closely to the revised 60s designs the direct to DVD films (and Scoobynatural) go for.

That being said, Alvarez is a talented and very flexible artist when it comes to matching whatever the lead character or art designer wants out of the project.

I've loved the animation on the more recent straight-to-video Scooby Doo movies.

TargetmasterJoe made a joke about Markiplier making an appearance on the show, but I can see him actually working well with the series due to his typical attitude with horror games meshing well with Shaggy and Scooby.

The storm has now resided, the wolf now rests.

I'm not going to lie, I think a Markiplier episode would be pretty fun too, especially given how much of a Large Ham Mark is.

I mean, a Lets Player playing a supposedly haunted video game, only for it to seemingly be real and go on to terrorize him and his viewers writes itself as a Scooby Doo plot. They could even have it be a parody of an actual game he's known for playing.

Bonus points if Markiplier is the Red Herring, because him making it all up for ratings is the obvious solution.

I still say that characters from Cartoon Network's older shows should be in it, like the characters working with the Powerpuff Girls or (as previously mentioned) Johnny Bravo.

Or even some of the newer shows. We should see Mystery Inc hang out with the Crystal Gems.

Johnny Bravo would be interesting, though I think the only thing he really brings with him is the gag of Velma having a thing for him. The Scooby Gang opens a lot of jokes for Johnny's series and humor style, but not really the other way around since they're not as centered around that kind of humor.

Actually... come to think of it, it's kind of interesting how across the whole franchise Velma is perhaps the most romantically active member of the gang. She's had more love interests than any of the others (even Shaggy) and I can think of at least three separate occasions where her aggressively pursuing a relationship is a gag.

[up] I don't follow franchise too tightly, but that often? The only aggressive pursuing I remember is her relationship with Shaggy in Mystery Inc and I can only think of two guys who also had (one-sided) interest in Velma: Jason Wyatt and Gibby Norton.

It'd be interesting to see Scooby and Shaggy having Courage's crazy reactions. Or commenting them.

The episode would just be a regular Courage episode, except Mystery Inc. would be visiting Nowhere to solve one of its 50+ monster cases, all while Courage keeps trying to tell them they're in over their heads. And then it turns out that the Monster of the Week is just a guy in a mask. Maybe it'd be Eustace.

Maybe I'm saying that, though, because I want another new Courage episode.

    Some old crossover commercials

It's very surprising that they never even made a real crossover episode of Scooby-Doo and Courage the Cowardly Dog. I remember when the Scooby-Doo characters appeared in Johnny Bravo, and more recently they've crossed-over with Supernatural of all shows.

I assume that this is a spiritual adaptation of the Sooby-Doo Team Up comics DC is producing. Hopefully, they adapt the hilarious scenes of Scooby and Shaggy getting drafted into the Sinestro Corps or Scooby becoming host to the Spectre.

Off the top of my head, just in terms of how many relationships or one-sided pursuits she's had in general there's:

  • Shaggy in Mystery Inc
  • Her being comically into Johnny Bravo in the crossover.
  • The dude who turned out to be the culprit in Phantosaur. She even promises to wait for him when he goes to jail.
  • The detective in Zombie Island.
  • Her nearly getting together with the writer who turned out to be a psychopath in Witch's Ghost.
  • The dude from the second live action movie.
  • Shaggy again in Curse of the Lake Monster.
  • On the "obviously not canon" side, but still made by the studio, the Supernatural special basically repeated the bit from the Johnny Bravo crossover, but with one of the characters from that show.

I also vaguely remember The Mystery Begins ship teasing her and Fred, but I didn't count it. Still, in terms of number of relationships across different media, she beats out Shaggy who iirc has had five (two of them with Velma herself, but I'm listing them twice for both since they're different continuities), maybe six if you count Velma's sister in Abracadabra.

Which is kind of funny, mostly because people joke about Fred and Daphne having all the UST when it's actually the other two quietly getting most of the romantic shenanigans.

Also, while I doubt it was intentionally consistent, it's kind of noticeable that Velma is near-always written as more forward than any of the others.
