Sleepless Domain is a webcomic by Mary Cagle, author of Kiwi Blitz and Let's Speak English.

The city is under constant attack by monsters. By day, a barrier keeps the city safe. At night, however, the barrier shuts down to reset and the city's main line of defense are Magical Girls who fight evil by moonlight.

Team Alchemical is a group of such girls. They have their problems, such as arguing over which of them should be leader, but are True Companions nonetheless. However, on one fateful night, tragedy befalls Team Alchemical and one member, "Alchemical Water" Undine, is determined to find out just what happened and why.

Even if that means she has to do it alone.

As that description implies, there's a First-Episode Spoiler at play. I'm making the effort to avoid it in the first post but I'm not expecting anyone discussing the comic later to go out of their way to do so.

Even when Undine has saved the day she's worried it's her fault it needed saving in the first place...

This is one of my favorite comics. Glad a thread got made.

That evil goop expulsion a couple pages ago was really unsettling, huh?

It was. I wonder if the fact that this is a known and, presumably, regular occurrence where monster attacks see concerned could fall into Nightmare Fuel.

Meanwhile, any takers that next comic is Undine trying to tell Heartful Punch It's Not You, It's My Enemies?

There's me being wrong. Though now I wonder if this will lead in to Heartful Punch's past. I've long thought she's gone through something like Undine did, since she's easily been the most empathetic about Undine's Survivor Guilt and has previously said she's got something of her own, albeit not on Undine's level, that helps her get where Undine is coming from.

I really like the Art Shift here into Undine's dream.

Also according to Mary Cagle, the webcomic is now three years old! grin

Hmm. The notion of the two of them as a couple, rather than a team, I had pretty much thought shipperiness until the fourth panel of this update. Especially with Kokoro having a female ex, I'm pretty sure now she's into her; I just wonder whether she reciprocates.

My posts make considerably more sense read in the voice of John Ratzenberger.

[up] Since when does HP have a female ex? Are you talking about Outrageous Lime, with her "so that was your type"? Honestly I took that as Mistaken for Gay. I'd thought the gag was the implications flying completely over Undine's head.

Though now you mention it that would make her follow up of "I have a guy, now" and others' surprise she had a boyfriend for together.

Also was there a proper Art Shift? I noticed their clothes changed, but otherwise nothing different art wise.

Maybe Art Shift was the wrong term to use, but it seems a lot more glossy or a filter was used or something, I dunno I'm not an art person but I think this dream is different stylistically from the other dreams

Yeah the implication there is that Lime was pursuing HP, but it didn't work out for some reason. And then HP's all "Oh boy I do not want to talk about past relationships or my possible interest in Undine right in front of her".

Ah. That wasn't how I took it, but I also confess I completely missed the part that confirmed transgender Magical Girls were possible because I don't scroll to read the author notes. I sincerely thought Claire's statement that everyone "still thought she was a boy" to be a little kid logic description of a tomboy until it occurred to me the description closely matched Zoe.

So take my observations for what they're worth.

A thought I had yesterday: Could Undine and Heartful Punch possibly be having a shared/joint dream?

We didn't actually see Kokoro fall asleep so it could go either way. I'm more inclined to believe that this is just Undine's dream at the moment.

So is Undine trapped in the dream now that the Woman in White compressed it?

A thought's occurred to me. It's a bit awkward to phrase so bear with be please: Since the loss of her team, has Undine met anyone while transformed who had also seen her transformed before?

Since Tessa used her power to save her, Undine has had pink pupils when transformed, but no one has ever commented on this. That's when it occurred to me that most people she's encountered since (HP, the teams she tried to join, the Power Training Club) were all meeting her for the first time. It's entirely possible that they don't realize the significance of the pink eyes. It may not come up until someone who knew her before see her changed and spots the difference.

Now I honestly wonder how long Undine was out.

"Don't you need to be at work-"

Is it strange that that line gives me the most dystopian feeling in this comic so far, even more so than the Team Alchemical merch being sold off? Makes you think about all the parents having busy lives while their kids are out having deathmatches with awful monsters.

Honestly, I was mostly just surprised that her name apparently really is "Undine". I always thought that it was more of a codename of sorts.

We saw the girls call her Undine in that flashback to the first day Undine got her powers.
