A Game of Gods Season 3: Terminus

Go To

There is a legend spoken across a myriad of worlds, a tale of a tower between worlds. Called the Tower of War by some, the Devouring Tower by others and the Tower of Gods by most. The story goes that at a time of great conflict and crisis, a great Tower appeared. A construct of jet black metal, it stretched into the skies to a height where none could see the top. And at the base of the Tower, a black and gold gate unlocked.

Here, the stories diverge. Some tell of a band of heroes emerging, bringing an end to dictators and those who would let conflict rage. Others tell of demons and evil beings spilling out from the Tower and covering the world in an eternal darkness. And others say that those who dared to enter never returned.

But all tales agree on one point. After a period, sometimes days, sometimes years, the Tower vanished, leaving behind a world forever marked by its arrival and legends in its wake. And the fate of those whom the Tower had swallowed was left in the hands of the Gods.

Greetings traveller, and welcome to the Tower. You have been chosen to climb its steps of black stone and seek the top where the Ruler awaits. Me? I am but a blind locksmith, forever cursed to lead those who would climb the Tower and explain how to proceed. At the top of this Tower awaits your reward should you succeed. Riches beyond your imagination, knowledge that surpasses that of the greatest thinkers, weapons that would pluck the sun out of the sky and treasures of technology that would make anyone a king of their world. And, should you wish to, a way home, just how you left.

Oh, do I sense hostility? Rebellion? Righteous anger, directed towards the Ruler for taking you from your home? Oh yes, you would not be the first. Certainly, the one responsible for your being here also awaits at the top. Would you like to strike them down? Take revenge for your treatment? Or take on the mantle of Ruler of the Tower yourself?

Yes, yes! For such is the nature of the Tower! At the top, your heart’s greatest desires! But to win, you must play the games that the gods dictate!

Ah, now you are listening? You wish to know how to play? Very well. You will climb the Tower one floor at a time. Each floor have the stairs to the next floor, locked. But each floor also has a black and gold gate that leads to a different world, locations unimaginable or locales familiar. From that world, a world embroiled in chaos and strife, you must locate the key that will grant you passage to the next floor. Will it be the crown of a king? The last coin of a beggar? The song of an animal? I will be able to tell you what it is, but you must find it by yourselves. And then you return here, and you can progress to the next floor.

A simple idea, but a difficult task. Travel the myriad of worlds that this Tower connects to, recover the keys and climb! Ascend towards the heavens, towards the reward that awaits above!

Climb!

Rules

First of all, please respect the forum rules and the RP subsection rules.

One character per player, please. We’d also like to keep powerlevels at a reasonable standard, but anything can be nerfed. Even if you think your character is too powerful, send them our way and we’ll discuss it. Rule of thumb, though: if your character can cause or fix natural disasters single-handedly in a short length of time, expect some nerfs.

Please keep to general R Ping etiquette. No ghosting (simply ignoring any attacks sent your character’s way); no autohitting (whether your character’s attack lands is up to the other player, not you); no taking control of other people’s characters, etc. Of course, these being etiquette and not laws, you can make breaches if they’re discussed with the other player beforehand.

The only real rule is that GM rulings are final, and must be obeyed, though if you have objections these rulings can be politely discussed. The GMs for Season 3 are Meanken, Makaioh and Lemurian.

The only time it really comes up in the games is when someone challenges Rhys to prove Jack's existence by having Jack see how many fingers the other character is holding behind his back, which Jack then does. So he's established as having his own field of vision, at least, and since he's a hologram he could probably stick his head in cupboards and stuff. He's not much use for recon, at best it would make Rhys harder to sneak up on. And Jack isn't present all the time either, so there's that.

Something I hadn't really thought of while feverishly writing this at 3 AM is that Rhys has a Loader Bot Companion that makes up for Rhys' s combat deficiencies, if just a little in comparison to his new companions. Given that Loader Bot has a definite, if laconic personality, would it be violating the doubles rule to append him onto my sign up, given that Jack is bouncing around?

If I had that kind of power, I'd have dropped a meteor on your house ages ago~

@ GCR: The outer Magnus Armor is like a suit of power armor adapted for Transformers: it can transform into a truck, increases his strength and durabilty, and shields the inner robot from harm. Damage to the outer robot is felt by the inner one to some degree. He's not indestructible - he can be shot, stabbed, etc., and sufficient small-arms fire will hurt him. Doing things like blowing his head off will injure Minimus, potentially knock him unconscious, and leave him unable to see/hear/communicate until he ejects, which might entail having to punch his way out.

He only has one built in ability in his suit: the ability to project a "holomatter avatar", a hard-light facsimile of a human that he can operate remotely. His default avatar.

(if he dies, or the armor's AI thinks he's dead, then the suit has a very limited autopilot function that lets it walk places by itself.)

(The best reference I can find of how it all fits together)

The inner augmentation armor is just an intermediate link between the Magnus Armor and his basic self. No powers of any kind, other than allowing him to turn into a tiny hovercar/minesweeper. This layer also has a dummy head with the same weaknesses as the Magnus head, although it's closer to the core robot and thus more vulnerable.

Think of it like Iron Man's Hulkbuster armor: it's a suit of armor that wraps around a smaller suit of armor that wraps around a guy.

Well enough, let me address your points in order:

  • Fade Magic: That is an excellent point. Perhaps although the Anchor can no longer manipulate rifts like it can back home, it is what provides her a lingering connection to the Fade. It is intrinsically tied to that realm, after all, and even so far removed from Thedas, the connection remains. We could say it is the Anchor that's fueling her Fade-based spells. How does that sound to you?
  • Dispel Magic: I agree, it should entirely depend on the kind of magic involved.
  • Energy Barrage: The crystal isn't consumed in the technique, it just needs a little while to cool off, so to speak, before the mage can use it like that again. It's the same crystal. It will also now have a good chance of missing.
  • Immolate: In the game, it isn't actually a terribly big blast radius, I'd guess around 10 feet in diameter at most.
  • Fire Rune: It has much the same diameter as Immolate. Normally she 'inscribes', so to speak, three of them at once, side by side, in an arc directly in front of her.
  • Spirit Blade: Amusingly enough, the ability was too powerful in game as well and got nerfed in the latest patch. I would say that although it's poweful, it drains power rapidly, particularly when trying to cut through something unnaturally tough like magic armor, extremely tough metals, stone, and the like. So she might only get partway through whatever she's trying to cut through before the blade flickers out and she has to use more magic to recharge it. Would that be sufficient?
  • Fade Shield: In game, this ability lets the player recover Barrier strength when they hit someone with magic. Speaking outside of that, I like to think of it like this: Say when Immolate detonates, it gives off energy through light and heat, right? The mage can absorb that energy and redirect it back into other spells of theirs, specifically Barrier. You are able to recover some of the magical energy you just used to cast a spell before it dissipates, but only put it towards certain uses, like this one.
  • Disruption Field: I would say this falls under the Entropy School of magic, which is based around things like hexes, life draining effects ,and such. Rather than infusing magic into an area, she's taking it out and taking life and vitality with it, making living things slower and weaker. Does that answer your question? I can certainly try to elaborate further.
  • Mark of the Rift is removed, as is the Anchor's ability to open and close rifts.
  • Well of Sorrows: I don't know the official answer to your question, that has never been shown in game, but at once point she says that the person who gains the power of the Well is under a geas and Mythal has been shown to be able to take control of her, so I would guess that they also can take control if they want to, though they don't seem interested in doing so, for whatever reasons. Maybe they just don't care about the world anymore, maybe nothing she's done is worth it, maybe they just don't like her very much (the ancient elves consider the modern-day elves little more than shadows who aren't even the same people), I really don't know.

All other questions will be dealt with tomorrow (Lemurian is really busy at the moment, and he's the most involved in this game, sorry for the inconvenience), but there is one inquiry we have spoken about:

Saitama is really really really OP. Like, ridiculously. That's the entire point of his character. We'd like to know what nerfs you'd suggest, but it may be easier to pick a different character. If you'd like to stick it out with Baldy, you're free to, but he's gonna take a lot of nerfing.

  • Demon summoning: I'm happy to limit it to a case by case basis that I'll run by you first, or nix it altogether.
  • Spell range: line of sight, I suppose. Blast range 10-20 feet at most.
  • Astral projection: nothing really spectacular, can leave his body and manifest as a force ghost to communicate over distances.
  • Teleportation: can only be done between familiar locations, and limited to a few times a day due to being tiring
  • Force fields: physical and magic resistant, limited to small areas, again too physically exerting to maintain for long

Regarding Josuke, I've been talking with Mal and people more jojo-knowledgeable than me. Crazy Diamond already can't roll someone's body back to a point before he met them, because he can't imagine what they'd be like before that point. For instance he wouldn't be able to de-age Old Toph or heal Johnny's legs.

We could say in the RP that this kind of extends to objects. Josuke wouldn't be able to repair something that he's never seen before, or that he can't conceive of how it's built. So, if he finds a table or a bridge or a car, he could fix that. He wouldn't be able to fix an alien spaceship or a magical artefact.

Rho Aias is quite possibly as strong as seven fortress walls; we never get an objective comparison in-universe save for the fact that it was able to block the thrown Gae Bolg, which in Eclipse was around the strength of an anti-tank missile and in canon managed to pierce down to the last layer. Work around that as you will. Damage to the shield becomes damage to EMIYA, in one way or another; hit the shield enough and he will start bleeding. Avalon is nerfed. Caladbolg is said to twist time-space in an area around itself, rending all it passes and exploding in a big boom, enough to engulf a cemetery in flames; I'll be content with nerfing it to a miniature whirlwind plus a moderate boom - say, a house-sized one. Excalibur Image is much weaker than normal Excalibur, strikes at melee range, and can only be used in Unlimited Blade Works. In legend, Durandal can carve canyons by dint of being indestructible; Roland's Breach was said to have been hewn this way. The phrase means nothing more than that indestructible swords are good for digging.

I'd like to note that he cannot pull these Phantasms out on a regular basis; he doesn't have Servant-level prana, and activation is implied to cost much more than simply shooting blades.

@GCR: Hmm... can't really think of anything concrete to nerf Daud's Void Gaze.

Would a shorter range work(around 20 meters around him)? Or would something like, say, a duration and interval between uses to avoid spammability?(one minute duration upon activation and has to wait ten minutes before he can use it again)

Thank you for your patience and hard work. I will adress the edits and questions first, then the new sheets we haven't gotten around to yet in my next post.

But first, Gaige, D.Va, Claw and Rhys are Accepted. They will be added to the Accepted Characters list soon.

@Rhyme And Treason: Normally there would be no problem using other installments to describe the capabilities of your character. However, it becomes a problem when you are using it to acquire abilities that are unavailable to her in her original source material. If you are saying that she is the Minerva that fought in the War of Shadows and War of Heroes, then that is incompatible with her learning the Class Skills of both the Lord class and the Falcon Knight class. If you are saying that she in some way crosses over with those games in such a way that grants her these skills, then perhaps she might better be suited as an AU version in Renaissance.

Particularly problematic is Rally Speed and Warding Blow. While Pegasus Knights promote into Dracoknights in Minerva's games while they also can promote into Falcon Knights, the Falcon Knight as a class is entirely unavailable to Minerva. And even if you throw Awakening-style reclassing into the mix, in that game Falcon Knights and Wyvern Lords are mutually exclusive. Now, the reason I'm harping on this is because Warding Blow removes the greatest threat to the Dracoknight/Wyvern Lord classes: magic. I don't think I need to remind you that Minerva has in-game a 0-5% Magic Resistance growth rate and a base stat of 0. I am unyeldingly unwilling to remove this weakness through giving her a skill that is entirely unavailable to her.

I can accept Tantivy and Quick Burn as a result of being an experienced Dracoknight, and I'll allow Charm as a way of saying that her noble warrior princess status inspires those around her. But Rally Speed and Warding Blow are entirely out of the question.

@Doctor Thunder: Yes, that's okay, with the limitations that we've previously discussed (needs to focus on staying unnoticeable if in battle, and is easier to spot if she gets noticed).

@wikkit: I see, that sounds reasonable. Please add that to your SU and you're good to go. smile

@All Hail Thrall: Hard to say. What do you say to 120 km/h (approx. 75 miles/h)? That would make him as fast as a fast car.

@Chabal: I'm afraid we are not willing to accept that. We understand that you both want to play the Toph that went through Sifuri. But as far as we can tell the events of Sifuri have had minimal effects on the Toph you are proposing, and we see no need to complicate the matter through justifying the fork in time when you will be able to play your intended character as an older version of the canon Toph.

@Makaioh: Those guidelines for the bigger spells look good. Kaguya's spells also look acceptable, though there are a couple of things. First of all, Mahamaon will be treated as Light-elemental/affinity damage and not instant death like it is in Persona 4. Second, Yomi Returns will have to require a prolonged state of uninterrupted casting. This is to avoid instances of people immediately recovering in the heat of battle after suffering a grievous injury that would leave them on the threshold of death. Is that acceptable?

@Uncandescent: Considering his size, combat capabilities and degree of independence, I think we'd have to see that as a second character, yes. Especially because unlike certain summoned creatures we've accepted so far, I assume Loader Bot will be around all the time. Would you like to sign up Loader Bot as a second character?

@Locoman: I see. What are his offensive capabilities?

@Red Cedar: Most of these edits are very good. Only two things. Now that we know what will enable the Fade Cloak, might we ask for an exact (preferably quite short) time limit on the invulnerability effect? And if you can elaborate further on Disruption Field, it would be greatly appreciated.

@Vox: We can do case-by-case with the demon summoning, yes. Also, is there a limit to his astral projections? Otherwise it looks good. smile

@Gaunt 88: Those sound like reasonable limits. smile Add those to your sheet, and we'll accept him.

@troydenite: Alright, for the most part that sounds good. But even with the conditions in place for Excalibur Image (UBW only, high prana cost and short range), I am hesitant to accept an ability strong enough to shatter buildings. Any changes that you are willing to make that you think can win me over?

@Just Some Guy 732: Both of those suggestions sound good. It will require a range limit in any case.

Then Josuke is accepted. smile

Sorry for the delay, desdenelle, just finished looking him over.

Theron looks good, just want to clarify a few things. First, how does he mark someone with the Mark of Death? Next, Below the Belt will be case-by-case. Similarly, am I correct in interpreting Evasion as he's gonna be an agile fighter who's good at dodging blows, not that you'll choose one in five attacks to evade without further explanation? Also, is Stealth an active ability that through some special procedure perhaps involving magic makes him hard to find, or am I to understand that he's just generally good at blending in with the shadows and finding spots where people are unlikely to spot him? Finally, are there any particular strong poisons that he can mix that we should know about?

Furthermore, I can't accept Pinpoint Strike in its current form. The way you've phrased it makes him able to see and strike weakpoints 1/3 of the time all the time. Could you perhaps rework it in some way that fits better in a written game-format?

Moving on to equipment, how do you intend for the Guildmaster's Belt to work? And if you combine the various stat-boosting equipment with basic abilities, approximately how strong/fast/durable is he?

  1. Mark of Death is 'cast' (it's one of the few Rogue abilities that looks like Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane to me) by this sort of dramatic two hand wave, if the animation's anything to go by. In-game it makes the target glow red and receive 20% more damage.
  2. Below the Belt — no problem.
  3. Evasion — pretty much, yeah. It's also one of the Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane things, going by its in-game description.
  4. Stealth is definitely a Talent, not a spell, so it's probably the latter.
  5. Theron knows how to mix the following poisons: Venom (aside from damage, has a chance to slow down enemies), Deathroot Extract (aside from damage, has a low chance of a stun by the way of hallucinations), and Crow Poison (which has a smaller chance of stunning enemies compared to the Deathroot Extract, but for a longer duration).
  6. Pinpoint Strike — it's definitely a "once per encounter" thing in-game (unless you're running a gauntlet, in which case you're probably dead before it goes off cooldown). Is that an acceptable nerf from "once every three minutes"?
  7. Guildmaster's Belt — how good are we on subtle suggestions? Something like people he haggles with feeling a subtle push to give him a little bit more money, stuff like that. The small chance to dodge everything is definitely magical in nature.
  8. It's tricky, because I don't have any way to figure what an increase in attributes in-game actually means w.r.t other people. Basically, average people have 10 in all six attributes. Theron's 49 Dexterity and 43 Cunning probably mean he's one of the fastest, most cunning people alive; his Strength, Willpower and Constitution (29, 23, 28 respectively) are probably rather above average; and his Magic score (14) means that he's got a bit more affinity for the arcane than the average Joe, but it's nothing special and not enough for him to be able to cast spells.

  • Backstory: Orphaned by the Noise when she was 8, Chris spent a number of years being trafficked through various warzones and questionable research institutes in order to evaluate her relic compatibility before she was kidnapped by the entity known as “Finé” when she was 14.

Finé used her as a weapon, granting her the completed relics known as the Nehushtan armour and Solomon's cane. While her intention in using these items was to end war by killing anyone with the willingness to fight, this lasted roughly until Hibiki punched some sense into her.

Good job, everyone. Ultra Magnus, Ben Tennyson, Yu Narukami, Ro-Man Extension XJ-2 and Koishi Komeiji are Accepted. I will edit the opening post. smile

@Chabal and Stratofarius: After talking this over, we're ready to accept both Toph Beifongs, as long as it's clear that the older Toph's knowledge of the events of Taskforce Sifuri are indeed old and that she in her timeline never experienced Terminus and thus can not tell anything about it.

@desdenelle: I see. Then, might I suggest that he has to be within striking distance to inflict the Mark of Death? And the Belt seems alright, just make sure you make it clear when it's the Belt that helps him avoid harm and please don't use it too often.

@Vox: Okay. Then, might I ask what the projection can do? If it's just intangible, we're ready to give it rather wide range. But if it can fight or cast spells, then the range will have to be rather short.

@Deadbeatloser 22: Chris looks okay, though we'd like you to not to make the missiles as huge as they can get in the series, especially when it comes to the Megadeth attacks. No missiles big enough to ride either. Also, as far as I can tell, Chris can procure her missiles almost instantly, which is a bit much. Would you mind making it so that it takes some time for her to prepare her missile-based attacks?
