A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

OK,let me try that again
Owing the way cartoon characters are often drawn it's hard to nail down how old they're meant to be,I used the example of Snow White because from what I've gathered she's meant to be 14 but she does not look like she's 14
New theme music also a boxOh. In your post above you said 12. I can buy 14, 12 is a bit harder.
Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.Well, in the original story Snow White is seven, soooooo

OK, as I clarified in my original post, I haven't actually watched Attack on Titan past the first anime plus some of the chapters about the reveal of the Colossal Titan's true identity. Most of what I've learned about this arc came from friends who do follow it (or criticize it) more regularly and social media posts about it.

I haven't read the manga neither, but I have friends that do and honestly? I stand that there would be way less issues if the Eldians (our protagonists ethnic group) were Not!Poles rather than Not!Jews.
The history is a classical "don't judge people for their ancestors, let nationalist hate go", with the Eldians being hated for being former oppressors...centuries ago, ergo, the sympathy for their opressors is gone and they are just being bigots.
Th eldrians in the wall aren't perfect and in fact, have many, many loathsome elements. But they are striking back against a nation that wants to either enslave or anhilate them. However, that doesn't mean that you have to cheer for the deaths of Marly civilians.
Again, not!Poles or not!Soviets would be better rather than not!Jews. I like the concept IMO, a genocidal war told from the victim POV showcasing that even they are undeniable victims, they are far from complete innocents.

Watch me destroying my countryUltimatum is right at that times the way a chararter is drawn hardly look the age it act, Azula from avatar have that issue, it was very hard to belive she was 16 in how sociopathic and eficent she was.
The same with saint seiya, I have a friend who have a crush on Ikki....which is kinda a little bit creepy considering ikki is 16, but I cant hardly flaw because he look VERY older.
But if I have to guess, is the exoticsaztion what is problem here.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Rather than Poles and Soviets my suggestion would be Cossacks and the Soviets. The Cossacks (as a ethnic minority) did suffer a lot of harsh and unjust treatment (by which I mean genocide) but they also had a ironclad past of doing pogroms against Jewish populaces.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."The article is in Spanish, but basically a number of Mexican actresses have anonymously demanded that Yalitza Aparicio of Roma not be nominated for the Ariel Awards, claiming she is “not professionally trained”. Thankfully it seems to be getting mostly ridicule, as she is already nominated for an Oscar so most find it absurd that she wouldn’t be considered by Mexico’s own film academy.
Brie Larson is pushing efforts to have more woman of color journalists at her film publicity events.

... hell yeah, good job, Brie Larson!
I meant Poles or Soviets. As people that faced a genocide at hands of National Socialist Germany.
I'd mentioned Poles because they had both the Small Underdog factor (Soviets rapidly become equal and then superior to the germans, they were already on their way to before the war. Poles in the other side...) and that, well, they had their own army and country, which is why the jewish parallel fails.
Said this, yeah, the work definitely had Unfortunate Implications that's up to the readers to decide they're ok or not. But definitely isn't "Hajime Isayama is a neo nazi". Marley, the real nazi analogue, is treated as a shithole lead for assholes.

Watch me destroying my countryWe might wanna drop the Ao T discussion, as it's not film related, and we're just going in circles about semantics of "what would count as less racist/anti-semetic than it already is".
Also, no, the author is not ignorant; people have been defending him as "ignorant" for years, and it's just not true. The man is member of several white-supremacist (why? he's Asian) and Japanese-nationalist groups on twitter and Facebook, has openly denied Japanese and Nazi atrocities in interviews, and has been photographed taking part in a Japanese-nationalist demonstration (though the photo in question was taken before he started working on Ao T, so...).
Besides, anti-semitism is only one of many brow-raising things Ao T has.
Fair enough.

"Film-related" is immaterial. This is the catch-all thread for media in general. Normally, that mostly means "TV shows and Western Animation, too" but there's no harm in including Anime.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them."Ultimatum is right at that times the way a chararter is drawn hardly look the age it act, Azula from avatar have that issue, it was very hard to belive she was 16 in how sociopathic and eficent she was."
Even better for your point: Azula is 14.
"What a century this week has been." - Seung Min KimI felt that one of the main themes in Attack on Titan is the nuance to all people but I agree that the use of Jewish imagary (mostly the start of David like emblem on the arm) is definitely concerning and does cause the show to lose so credibility to me.
Science is my most favorite subject, especially the Old TestamentLarkman is correct. If we were to drop non-film discussion, we may as well drop this entire thread, given the site's name is "TV" tropes. Discussions grow.
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for you"(why? he's Asian)"
Somebody call Asian Dave Chapelle.
Discussions on AOT's politics don't grow, they indeed go around in circles, as some people see things in it that others (including myself) simply don't. Like we're reading two different series. There's already been pages and pages of debate about that stuff in the series' thread, so I don't see the point of importing it here.
Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo. The new thing is new people are learning. And they have a right to express their reactions to it?
Like if an outsider sees something and their first reaction is "holy shit" that's a bit of a bad look, and defining it as just the same ol' same ol' circle argument is a bit disingenuous.
Read my stories! In defense to the whole "Ariel was 16 years old" thing, I always subscribed to the lore that mermaids life periods are much different than humans. She's only "16 years old" by what they classify as a year, but to us humans, she's really probably like 100.
Yeah, I know, that doesn't make it better.
Speaking of the "Ariel naked on the beach after her transformation" scene, I've wondered for some time if this is the reason why Disney's been on/off repeated the past several years about doing a live action remake of The Little mermaid, cause they don't wanna have to deal with this portion of the film.
If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them.Probably more to do with the fact that most of the movie takes place under water and waters effects are ungodly expensive, and while Disney can probably afford it they want it make good it's return so I imagine they're looking at how their other live action films have done before moving on to Ariel.
I can't wait for Live action Finding Nemo and Dory!
New theme music also a boxDo.it with CGI fishes that look like real fishes and I legit watch it.
Watch me destroying my countryI mean. Is that not what it is already?
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youI want one where they look like real fishes, no cartoony eyes or anything, but actual fishes.

Watch me destroying my country
The way cartoon characters age is abstract as I see it.Snow White is meant to be 14 but the way she's drawn makes her resembled someone older
