Charts with Dan covers this past weekend's box office release for Halloween Ends, which chose to do a simul-release in theaters and Peacock. Smile continues to have a "2022 horror film" success story, among the other usual analytics.

  • 1:30: Top 5 Box Office Weekend
    • 11:02: Top 6

  • 2:20: Halloween Ends
    • According to Universal, the film's viewership debut on Peacock is the best for the service within two days of release.
    • $44 million debut isn't disastrous, but the franchise film could've done more.
    • Weak word of mouth could have culprit, with the Peacock availability being a lesser symptom. (CinemaScore the lowest at C+.) (4:10)

$44 million debut isn't disastrous, but the franchise film could've done more.

Could it, though? This kind of endless franchise tends to have diminishing returns. 44M is pretty solid considering it’s, what, the 12th movie in the series by now?

This week's Charts with Dan proclaims Black Adam's Critic-Proof box office gross, while Halloween Ends takes a dip.

  • 2:03: Black Adam
    • The film overperformed its box office expectations, and its currently the biggest starring debut for The Rock domestically. (2:31-3:45)
    • Ranked #5 under best domestic October debuts of all time. (4:30)
    • While not quite new, the stark Critical Dissonance here for Dan is notable compared to the usual DC fare. Some RT comparisons across all DC films is used for reference (5:17 - 8:37)
      • CinemaScore from surveyed theatergoers was a B+. (9:31)

  • 10:30: Ticket to Paradise overperformed at the US domestic box office, becoming:
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_20221025_120828.png

  • 10:22: Halloween Ends
    • Its 80% drop in the second weekend notably puts the film as the 4th biggest second weekend drop in the US Box Office (specifically playing in 2000+ theaters).
      • Upgrade to 2th biggest second weekend drop when expanded to 3000+ theaters.
    • Notablely, this chart shows that horror films tend to suffer the biggest drops after opening at #1. Dan believes this is why the genre tends to be budgeted cheaply. Film/Smile beat the odds. (14:30)
    • Even factoring its dual release nature, Halloween Ends still preformed less successfully compared to similar releases.(15:16)

  • 1:40: Top 5
    • 7:40: Top 10
  • 2:35: Black Adam
    • Dan address his last week analysis of this film with Eternals; films with similar budgets that where the latter debuted higher. He admits that different expectations played a part, with Dan expecting better performance from Eternals considering circumstances around its prestige. Black Adam didn't have that.
    • Analysis on how Black Adam's second weekend drop compared to other DCEU films. A lot of circumstanial cases for films like Aquaman (two week Christmas weekend), and Birds of Prey (whose drop off is impressive, in hindsight, due to being two weeks away from COVID-19 lockdowns). (4:29;6:37).
    • "Not a catastrophic drop, but didn't hold as well as Shazam." Likewise for its international box office (5:37).
      • However, he stresses that it's basically "wait and see" on its overall performance. No competition next week, and it could have legs like Dwayne's last film DC League of Super-Pets.

  • 1:05 :Top 5
    • 6:59: Top 10

  • 2:25: Black Adam
    • Third weekend domestic drop managed to tie with SHAZAM! (2019), making it one of the better holds in the DCEU. Wonder Woman holds the best in the category, while Birds of Prey is last.
    • For the 17 days of release chart, the film is tracking as well as Shazam. However, Shazam had half of Black Adam's budget, so it's a double egde sword against this film. (3:32)
    • While Black Adam is performing well above critic expectations, its $200 million budget continues to be hurdle for its long term domestic and international growth. (3:59)
    • Naturally, Black Panther could siphon its pull. Black Adam had three weeks to only pull $350 million worldwide, touching $400 by this weekend. (4:35)
    • Ultimately, Thanksgiving holiday could give the film more gas in the tank (a trend for previous film releases around that time). (5:30)
    • The film apparently lost a couple of US theaters compared to last week's tally. Still a consistent mainstay for per theater numbers. (13:01)
    • For now, Black Adam is now the 10th highest grossing film in the 2022 US box office (surplanting Nope). Another $11 million could keep it there, against Uncharted (2022).(17:44)
      • An additional $75 million worldwide would help Black Adam take Sonic The Hedgehog 2's 10th place. (18:28)

The worst part of Strange world's failure is that homophobes will claim that it's because of it having a gay paring when the reality is that's is failure was because Disney barely gave it any publicity at all.

This week's Charts with Dan covers the recent R-Rated "Home Alone" Antics / "Die Hard" on an X holiday film, Violent Night. Followed by the continued successes of Glass Onion and Black Panther 2, while Black Adam's box office fate seems a little troubled as predicted.

Lastly, it seems Prime Video is potentially overthrowing Netflix's top status.

    • Clearing up some miscommunication: Two trusted publications get into a catfight. Variety reported that the film won't be profitable specifically in its theaterical run (hence a reliance on merch and home media sales). Deadline pushes back under the impression the film wouldn't be profitable at all, using a different set of numbers.
    • Dan pushes back on The Rock's "building blocks" comparison to the performance of Captain America m: The First Avenger. Cap had a much lower production budget and a higher domestic gross. Adjusting for inflation makes the numbers worse for Black Adam in the comparison.(13:56)

Late on my end! Sorry guys:

This week's Charts with Dan covers Avatar: The Way of Water. The film is surprisingly James Cameron's first 100+ million weekend debut, but also seemed to have come below projections. Still, Dan reasons we should look into the long-term, while cover the usual box office numbers.

Took a break from posting him, but Dan Murrell recently did an early box office analysis of this past weekend, with Spider-Verse being the centerpiece.

He also talks about the current progress of The Little Mermaid and Fast X, which seems to have inverse box office qualms. (The Little Mermaid's doing good in the US market, but straggling overseas. Fast X is doing middling business in the US, but very lively overseas.)

  • 7:59: In the spirit of his past niche charts, Dan finds Spider-Verse gained the biggest opening domestic weekend growth between sequels for a comic book movie. It beats out the previous holder, The Dark Knight.

It's good to see Spider-Verse having such a successful start compared to the previous one, it shows how much word of mouth from the previous films of a franchise matters. It's too soon to tell how much Across will make, but if Beyond is as well-received, I could see it getting near a billion.

This week's Charts with Dan covers the Juneteenth holiday box office weekend, seeing the debuts of Elemental (2023) and The Flash (2023). It's...wasn't a very good box office for films that weren't featuring Miles Morales or low-budget horror.

    • Dan figures that it's no coincidence that Disney and Warner Bros., that accidentally trained audiences to see films at home through their streaming services, are getting hit the most when putting out films. Along with their own complacency about guaranteed franchise hit movies. (25:00)
