Reddit, the front page of the internet. I figure a lot of tropers use the site, and considering the subreddit they have on us, I figured it'd be appropriate to have a Reddit thread of our own.

Ah yes, Reddit. Home to strange happenings and surprisingly civil conversations on fanpages. I recommend subscribing to the /r/outside subreddit. It basically treats Real Life like a game and has hilarious conversations.

Some subreddits currently in my head: /r/comics includes both works with pages on tvtropes and some less known/one shots. /r/CrappyDesign and /r/shittyfoodporn can have things that make you go "lolwtf What Were You Thinking?".

So, apparently there are folks getting fired at Reddit and subs are either getting taken down (the nasty ones) or are going into private mode (the ones which were part of the responsability of some folks who worked closely with Reddit or something).

As a result, shitstorm is ensuing.

It's weird: whenever I join something, the site usually gets a big renewal or gets some stuff taken down a bit afterwards. It happened here, and it happened there.

Here's the full story, as I understand it:

The idea of Reddit was that it was a haven for free speech. Each sub could moderate as much as they wanted but the admins were very hands-off, moderation-wise.

A few months ago, an admin named Ellen Pao became CEO, and Reddit was ticked because they don't like her. As far as I know, major changes weren't made too much at that time. A few weeks ago, an unpleasant subreddit called fatpeoplehate - exactly what it sounds like - got banned. The official statement by management is that they banned five subreddits with a history of harassing behavior, including fatpeoplehate. According to one thread I read, they also banned most of that subreddit's mods.

Yesterday, a woman named Victoria was fired. She ran and organized nearly every AMA, not just on the official AMA subreddit but also on other subreddits that had interviews, such as /r/books and /r/science. This pissed off IAmA for two reasons: (1) Her being fired was extremely sudden and the subreddit was given no time or warning to try to figure out how to deal with her absence and (2) The admins have been getting less and less accessible to mods, and Victoria was one of their only remaining lines of communication with them. As of right now, no official explanation has been given for her termination, but it's suspected that it has to do with the Jesse Jackson AMA yesterday, during which some users had some angry words for Jackson and Victoria did not delete or censor the comments.

IAmA temporarily shut down to figure out how to handle Victoria's absence. Similarly, as a show of solidarity, the other subreddits she helped also went private to support IAmA, and to also figure out what to do without her.

Other subreddits with no connection to Victoria started going private as a statement against the administration. Many of them are small and inconsequential, but many are quite large, such as TodayILearned, Movies, Jokes, and even AskReddit.

And that's where we are now. Pass the Popcorn, please.

Reddit has a whole Tactical Rock–Paper–Scissors between admins, moderators, and users. Users have basically no direct power but they have numbers and can make the site unusable with mass voting and concentrated spamming. Mods have full power over their subreddits but no power outside and can't stop people from making new subreddits to bypass them. Admins have limitless power but if they ever use it against popular users, users will start a riot, and if they interfere with well-regarded subreddits, mods can shut down their subreddits in protest.

Admins could ban the moderators and reopen their subreddits, but then no one would trust the new moderation and the users would throw fits and abandon them. The only way admins can beat the big moderators is if the users hate the mods more than the admins, which is fairly common but not happening now. It's a whole community constantly on the brink of mutually assured destruction. It's awesome.

The current blackout and shutting down (making private) of subreddits isn't to do with the admins and CEO shutting down subreddits. It has to do with the poor communication and lack of support the unpaid volunteer mods get from the admins (like not working on making non-shit mod tools). Victoria getting fired was the catalyst for a reaction, because of how the admins handled it (not telling the mods that relied on her, or having people in place to assume her responsibilities).

IAMA is back, but they still have absolutely no faith in the administration and will bypass them for all future AMAs.

This whole thing struck me as a "what the hell" moment for Reddit admins, and I question their capacity to run the site at all.

And Now Ellen Pao is resigned from her position as CEO.

Steve Huffman is returning to that particular place.

This thread is alive!

Anyways, I am a reddit user. I've been using the site since 2016. My favorite places to visit are r/JRPG, r/Patientgamer, r/anime, r/Progmetal, r/games, and Shreddit.

I like the place just as much as TV Tropes. Perhaps slightly more. Interesting conversations anyways spring up and things are slightly less uptight compared to here.

I mostly only use it to have an alternative place for discussion for things I like: RWBY, Dragonball, Life is Strange, Walking Dead.

So those subreddits.

And r/Ariel Winter, Jennette Mccurdy, and Jessica Nigri.

But I suppose my "favorite" would be the Arrow subreddit since they tried to Ret-Gone their own existence and made themselves into a subreddit for an entirely different show.

The Arrow subreddit accurately reflects my feelings about Arrow.

Namely this season I would rather be watching The Punisher.

They had a security breach and are urging people to change their passwords

"A hacker broke into a few of Reddit’s systems and managed to access some user data, including some current email addresses and a 2007 database backup containing old salted and hashed passwords. Since then we’ve been conducting a painstaking investigation to figure out just what was accessed, and to improve our systems and processes to prevent this from happening again."

I've been a lurker there for a few years but I finally took the leap and decided to join their Secret Santa event. I'm so nervous, hehe.

Has anyone here participated before?

Cool! I also visit r/anime too. Although I'm more of a lurker. I only post on the dark souls 2, the sims and Mexico subreddits, hehe.

In other news, I got matched to my secret santa and he's from Russia. I thought it was going to be easy because he had a wishlist... then I found the one thing he wants isn't sold in my country. Fun.
