Welcome to "Desert Sun", an RP set in modern-day Africa in the fictional country of Harrawi. In here, players assume the role of foreign volunteers who are sent to be assigned to the Harrawian Army's "Foreign Volunteer Brigade". Their job is to help the regular military in operations throughout the country. Sometimes, they are also used in operating under black ops conditions when warranted under certain circumstances.

The RP is influenced by the manga/anime franchise Area 88, Metal Gear and the exploits of actual military forces that has or are still recruiting volunteers like the French Foreign Legion and the Rhodesian Light Infantry.

Feel free to ask anything regarding the signup here. Otherwise, any other questions/comments regarding the game should be addressed here.

Browse here to see the brainstorming that led to the creation of this game.

All right, let's start with the basics...

Name: Lt. Amelia Walewska
Appearance: short height and slim build, gray eyes, blonde hair cropped just short of shoulder length, fair but darkening skin.
Nationality: Australian legally; Polish by ethnicity.
Service branch: 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Australian Army (ASLAV-25s)
Background: a product of a distant branch of the Colonna-Walewska family that can trace its descent from Napoleon Bonaparte himself, Amelia is a child of the Polish diaspora: her grandfather served in the Polish 1st Armored Division in Africa and France, and chose to return to postwar Poland. Her father served as a tank officer in the postwar Polish forces, but was kicked out from the army following the 1981 crackdown and emigrated to Australia two years later. As a result, Amelia has ties to both her native Australia and her familial Poland; she is, in her own eyes, an heir to a cavalry tradition dating back hundreds of years, as well as the third generation of armored cavalry officers in her family.

  • Service history: Iraq, Afghanistan; a two-year stint cross-attached to a Polish mechanized unit gave her some familiarity with Eastbloc weapons.
Skills: Amelia is quite used to mentoring inexperienced Iraqi and Afghan soldiers in armored operations. The AMX-13 is not so familiar to her, but light armor is light armor.
Others: Amelia has picked up a smattering of Arabic, but her primary languages remain Polish and English. She keeps a CZ-75 pistol by her side in war zones.

Claims she's either 27 or 30 (depending on the company), looks older due to sun and sand, which is really a very convenient excuse.

Here comes mine:

  • Name: Captain Mark Chung
  • Appearance: Has East Asian appearance with black hair and a height of 5'8. Has a mole near the left side of his lips.
  • Nationality: Filipino of Chinese descent
  • Age: 27
  • Service Branch: Philippine Army by way of the First Scout Ranger Regiment before recruitment to the Light Reaction Regiment
  • Background: Born to a Chinese-Filipino family in Manila with his father being a businessman and his mother a university professor at the Ateneo de Manila university. He lived in Singapore for a time and studied there for his primary education and moved back to Manila to study for his secondary education. He then studied in British Columbia, Canada for his university education. Instead of working with his father, he made the decision to join the Philippine Military Academy instead after he went back to the Philippines. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the army when he was 21, Mark was posted in the 2nd Infantry Division where he fought against New People's Army fighters throughout the CALABARZON region. After a year of service in the 2ID, he joined the Scout Rangers, where he was posted with the 4th Scout Ranger Battalion and later fought against Abu Sayyaf and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters militants when he was deployed in Mindanao. Mark then decided to join the Light Reaction Regiment after two years of Scout Ranger combat experience, where he was deployed to the 3rd Light Reaction Company. A LRR mission to capture an important NPA commander for link to foreign communist terrorists in Zamboanga Del Sur went bad when most of his comrades were killed in an ambush by IEDs and landmines. He was one of the few surviving operators to live through the ambush when reinforcements from the 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion. Mark tendered his resignation after four years of service with the unit and left the public eye.
  • Skills: Thanks to his time in the Philippine Army, he is familiar with small arms, armed and unarmed close quarters combat and reconnaissance. He can speak fluent English, Tagalog, Hokkien and limited Japanese when he studied the language back in Canada.
  • Comments: He speaks English with a slight Singaporean accent. Prior to his transfer to the LRR, he did additional training in Japan in the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces' Western Army district and earned a Ranger qualification badge when he conducted training with other foreign soldiers invited for further training. Mark refuses to comment on the reason why his unit was ambushed in Zamboanga Del Sur.

Prior to his travel to Harrawi, Mark was able to secure a Schlieper-made Fairbarn-Sykes fighting knife & a Sarsilmaz ST10 pistol.

What are we allowed in tools and weapons? How close to near future can we get? Based on current practices and theories or... what?

Other than that, I am interested.

Modern era. Give or take 2020. I don't see this going future tech like invisible camo and all. For personal tools or weapons, it's not mandatory. In-game, the Harrawian military takes care of most of your gear.

Ah excellent. So a few guns or tools (nothing too outlandish) from the Cyberpunk Asia website should be good then.

Welp then I will have a character up eventually.

  • Name: Adam Paige
  • Appearance: Slight tan on skin from so much time in sunlight, steely gray eyes, around 5'10" in height, light brunette hair, sort of a ragged beard with a thick mustache
  • Nationality: Born in America, New York, born to a Japanese Father and Caucasian Mother
  • Age: 29
  • Service Branch: United States Special Operations Command, DELTA, Sergeant
  • Background: Adam was born to a American-Japanese family with his father being a lawyer and his mother a teacher at the NYU. He applied for the military when he turned 18 figuring it was one of the best ways to serve his country hoping to get out of it and into peacekeeping with the UN. To his surprise after 3 years he was chosen for a 5 year career with USSOCOM, he took it figuring it would be best to get special operations training. This lead him to various covert operations and tought him how to lay low and out of sight.
  • Skills: Covert Operations and stealth, capable of at least laying low and out of view for a little bit, decent skill with pistols and assault carbines preferring something smaller with accuracy. Training in various forms of Close Quarters combat as well, prefers to stay back and pick off the enemy silently.
  • Comments: Adam carries a USP .45 Tactical with a Laser Light Combo attachment and silencer with a KA-Bar for any close quarter incursions onto the battlefield. He is aware of his status as a soldier and keeps aware that he could die at any moment on the battlefield so he tends not to be too emotive or talkative.

Mine.

Nice girl. Quiet girl. Action girl. Unrepentant killer.

  • Name: Brittaney Andersen
  • Appearance: Six foot six, 212 pounds, dark red medium length hair.
  • Nationality: USA, resided in Silicon Valley and travels across North America during holidays.
  • Age: 39, born February 27th 1974.
  • Service Branch: United States Marine Corp rifleman (1992-1994, E-1 - E-3,) deployed to Kosovo as part of a peacekeeping force (1994-1998, E-4 - E-8,) College training for pilot role and joined the 20th fighter wing Coyote upon graduation (E-8 - O-1, 1998-2001,) Tiger Team, a prototype for Lion Squad (2001-2003,) Lion Squad (2003-2006,) reassignment to the 20th fighter wing following back injury, then assigned to prison duty at Camp Voodoo (2006-2010,) instructor Officer Reassignment Certification Academy (2010-present.) Highest rank 2nd Lieutenant.
  • Background: Brittney grew up with s strong if somewhat unique sense of right and wrong, and in her teenage years sought to help others while using her height and size playing basketball. This came to a head three weeks before she took on a athletics scholarship where she volunteered to help those with crippling mental disabilities, some people picked on them, Brittaney retaliated, a fight broke out and she ended up missing out on a scholarship for that year.

It was suggested she join the marines to learn discipline and help build her resume. Brittaney saw it as a chance to play the action girl and served as a rifleman for two years before deployment to Kosovo where she saw first hand the horrors of war, and how it affected the innocents caught up in the conflict. As soon as she could be sent back she completed her scholarship and attended college to become a pilot, her promotion to 2nd Lieutenant being fast tracked after the September 11 attacks and was assigned to the 20th fighter wing Coyote where she alternated between routine flights before and after maintenance and security exercises, patrols at sporting events. However in the lead up to Afghanistan Brittaney said she wanted to be a part of it.

She was deployed to Afghanistan first flying Hornets in the Khyber Pass then operating on the ground with Tiger Team, performing numerous operations as infantry and occasionally working as a sniper. When the conflict moved to Iraq she was left behind as part of Lion Squad where she found she very much enjoyed humanitarian aid. This was when Brittaney saw that there was a lot of opposition to the conflict and support for terrorism, even back home, and she would jump at the chance to join a conflict that Lion Squad would be involved in. Offers were made for instructing at the Officer Reassignment Certification Academy but Brittaney thought she was more needed where she was. However in 2006 she permanently injured her back taking on too much of the unit's work load, and her commanding officer arranged for her to be reassigned to Coyote squadron. Sadly with little in the way of an air presence in Afghanistan Brittney wanted to stay and help, and took up prison duty at Camp Voodoo.

Here Brittaney was very vocal on opposition to fighting terrorism and support for Al Qaeda, and when fresh allegations of torture came up the social media wanted to make her a scapegoat. Despite the fact she wasn't even at the prisons it occurred the marines discharged her, and Brittaney took up the offer to join ORCA where she has instructed ever since.

  • Skills: Essentially what Brittaney knows she's good, but not that good. She's a fine infantry soldier, certainly knows what she's doing. Decent sniper but there are better, more knowledgeable of the mathematics involved. And a skilled pilot, preferring the F/A 18-C to the Super Hornet even if it's a better multirole fighter and she prefers that to air superiority.

A soft spoken, kind hearted veteran marine offset by her imposing size and height, and the fact she is an unapologetic soldier. She works as a instructor for the Officer Reassignment Certification Academy (ORCA), pilot for the 20th fighter squadron, 11th bomber wing Coyote (callsign Mess) and more than capable ground trooper.

Wearing marine dress uniform.

  • Amazon Brigade: Was part of the USMC's lion squad, a all female unit commanded by Major Krysa as part of women serving in a combat role.
  • Bodyguard Babes: Not Brittaney herself but she was instrumental in training a woman who saw fit to do this, even guiding her to learn how the LAPD SWAT protect VI Ps.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Subverted, Brittaney is familiar with enhanced interrogation techniques and is willing to use them, but knows other methods are more productive. A ticking time bomb scenario? She would be prepared to give it a shot. This actually came back to bite her after allegations of torture and prisoner abuse, in truth she wasn't even at the prison it occurred but was made a scapegoat anyway, and she had to be discharged due to trial by media.
  • Declaration of Protection: Brittaney and her desire to keep civilians safe, in a nutshell.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Wants to believe this, but has come to the realization that some believe killing children, or using them to kill, is perfectly acceptable, and that some support those who use such methods.
  • False Flag Operation: Suggested but rejected in hurting prisoners then releasing them to either allies Dressing as the Enemy to gain information or to track down where they operate. At ORCA she likes to take the worst recruits out where they are targeted in a mock attack.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Flits between a mild form of this and Rant Inducing Slight.
    • When her back acts up pretty much anything can set her off, luckily she saves her wrath for things rather than people.
    • One time in the marines she was subject to Murphey's Law, anything that could go wrong would, and she would take her sidearm and hurl it into the desert whenever it did.
  • Handicapped Badass: Permanently injured her back pushing herself as a marine, but as long as it holds out she can still fight.
  • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Brittaney hates wearing them as they place strain on the head and neck, or the likes of armor or protection as it slows her down from not getting shot in the first place. She doesn't even like masks as they are a distraction and she thinks she's breathing in carbon monoxide making her tired.
  • Homoerotic Subtext: As a teenager Brittaney took in a younger girl for some days after she had to flee home. It was suggested there was some of this and Brittaney herself admitted that the idea of a rescue romance wouldn't have been surprising, but otherwise denies anything happened.
  • Nice Girl: Once you get over her massive height and size it turns out she's a very sweet and kind woman, for those who are not put off by her making no apologies for what she does. Just a little bit temperamental.
  • An Officer And A Lady: Brittaney is all about this trope at ORCA.
  • One of the Boys: She earned the callsign Mess because she was pushing herself so hard she had no time or energy to keep her quarters clean.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: When prima donnas, the lazy and wannabe drill sergeant nasties show up Brittaney first beats up on them bad to show how out of their depth they are, then is very polite and in contrast to her shy and private life off duty not only details on what recruits are to do and how, but why as well, give them a reason to care, and show how much better her way is. To everyone else she's the kindly instructor who hears people out even if she disagrees, before telling them what they need to know.
  • Rant Inducing Slight: Insults on the disabled (disturbed having looked after those with crippling mental handicaps) or support for those who see terror, torture and murdering innocents as legitimate weapons of war earn, at the very least, a half hour lecture on why it is wrong.
  • Semper Fi: How she started out before her back injury and subsequent discharge moved her to a teaching role.
  • Shout-Out: When talking about who who would play them in Lion Squad Brittaney suggested Alyson Hannigan. Why someone she has a foot and some seventy pounds of muscle on? So the actress could be bigger and have grenades, much like she discussed on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Six foot six and 212 pounds.
  • Take That!: Hands these out like candy. Several gems.
    • "These snivel libertarians, they were going to act as human shields protecting some dictator's high value targets, hoping to get attacked so their buddies can make the military look bad. In the end I think three people went to protect a hospital. Where are they now? Not helping the dictator's victims, they're doing research for something they can attack whoever fights said dictator with safely behind a computer." On war opposition.
    • "Worse is the international media. We see a mother crying over her terrorist son, 'auuuggghhh,' then they show it again, 'auuuggghhh,' then a different angle, then in slow motion, 'auuuuuugggggghhhhhh,' then add commentary, then special effects, in case the first five times did not tug at the heartstrings of those they told he was a terrorist." On the media.
    • "I could be wrong about this, but when we have one party or guy in power some whine. No problem there. Then the opposition get in and the same people whine. When someone shows support or says anything these keyboard warriors agree with they still whine. Why don't they go into politics themselves if they're so great? The answer is they can't, they're too busy targeting any public figure in the hopes of feeding on their blood like vampires." On trial by social media.
    • And one more.
    • "I really try not to be a cynic. I really do. But so many people are so cynical in what they say that sooner or later I have to say something back, something they won't like. They'd be wanting blood, but they might like to have another look at what they say first. Is telling the world everybody sucks but them really any better than someone calling them out on it? If they really are better than everyone else then perhaps they would like to prove it."
  • The Workaholic: So committed to breaking her back for others she did it literally, and she still does so and have it flare up on her.

Stern Brittaney.
