Ok, per mod decision, the purpose of this thread is to scrutinize and clean up pages about web sites. Other Sites, especially, has become a catch-all for "my favorite web site that I feel like pimping."

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS:

  • A Web Site Is Not A Work For Troping Purposes: A website can contain tropable content, but the site itself does not automatically have a place with us simply by existing.
  • A Web Site That Is Not Tropable Can Sometimes Be Repurposed: It may have a place as a Useful Notes page, or serve as an index if it hosts a lot of works that we do trope.
  • User Antics Are Not Tropable: Trolls, mod decisions, forum drama. Such are Troper Tales and sources of spiritual decay. They must be purged, even from acceptable pages.
  • User Created Content Is Potentially Tropable: But most of it has its own categories already, such as Game Mod, Fan Fiction, or Journal Roleplay.

Put pages you believe should be completely cut in the crowner at the bottom. If you believe a page can be saved or migrated, make a post with details. Other Sites contains the primary targets right now, but any page about a web site should be scrutinized

My bad, ~Madrugada. I just figured out that that "added x date @ x time" is added manually. I'll add that for Lifehacker, then start keeping it up starting with the new crowner (unless you want me to go back through the whole thread; do you?). EDIT: Timestamped Lifehacker and Not Always Right (since I should at least have timestamped my own open submission for this crowner; also made a .txt file to a) streamline timestamping (I've nabbed a template of the markup) and b) help keep track of the open options' progress; I'll try to update it at least once a week.) Oh, and 7 (stable) days sounds perfect. That dovetails perfectly with my planned "tracker" update schedule and avoids weekender issues as mentioned. Who decides that btw? Me as the curator/herder/whatever, or mod consensus? And "stable" means no changes in votes for 7/however many straight days (or 168 hours assuming 7 days) since an option was added, right?

No, you don't have to go back through everything. Find a way to handle that works for you so you can keep up and pick it up from here.

You decide "stabile" and no that doesn' tmean no changes for 7 days, In TRS and IP Stable tends to be "no significant changes in 2 to 3 days (unless that's over the weekend). "Significant" changes means that it's plausible that the decision could be changed. It's kind of a "by feel" thing. PM me if you have questions or doubts.

And thanks.

I found this page, Quackwatch, that calls real life people and organizations evil. I am pretty sure that watchdog websites are outside of tvtropes's mission.

You'd assume correctly. However, I'll need to add it to an unhooked crowner pending this one getting resolved (which considering eBay and other issues have been frozen for at least a year, I'd feel better if I conferred with my mod liaison first, green herald that I am. ~Madrugada? And by the way, there's been no posts here for two weeks at least. Is is jumping the gun to assume the crowner is just as dead? I haven't had reliable access to a desktop because reasons. I'll get my tracker on my phone ASAP.

That crowner is so stale, Everything on it has been there for more than a month. Go ahead and act on all of them. I don't see any that are close enough that they could turn around, barring a huge vote drive by someone with an agenda.

Why is The Amazing Atheist struck out from the crowner? It has a 1.71:1 ratio, so I take it you're taking it off the crowner without cutting the page? Because cutting something without at least a 2:1 ratio doesn't follow precedent. Also, Lifehacker has a unanimous consensus to cut.

Whoa there. I know that wasn't directed at me. I have not 'listed a single thing yet. In fact, I was about to let ~Madrugada (if no one else) be made aware that I now feel like I rather rushed into things against my better judgement (and am, if not quitting per se, at least attempting to delegate the worst of the grunt work to another troper pending my getting a personal laptop instead of just a (quite shitty, to be blunt) phone at the very least.

I'll be honest here...I simply got an insect where the sun doesn't shine (to coin a phrase wink ) about what I perceived as a problem (essentially, stale processes of any kind annoy the living fuck out of me, to be perfectly candid, which is only made worse by my mild learning disability [no [1] implied, mind, it's just a fact.]

Well, that's essentially it. And this longwindedness is because I have recently had a near terminal case of writers block (nearly 7 solid years, if you can believe it!) broken, and I am predictably going mad as far as that goes [lol]

It was directed at the person who struck it out, so yeah, directed at you. I tried not to be really aggressive, but I can see that I was. Sorry for that. Basically, I was asking whether the page was about to be cut or if the item was being taken off the crowner for not having a consensus to cut or keep.

As I said, upon reflection, I must respectfully back away at least until I have more than a phone at my fingertips without any roadblocks at all (hence, my own with a reliable source of at least free Wi Fi, which is surprisingly easy to acquire if one digs about...no, I'm not leeching I swear! [lol] When I am on desktop, it's never my own personal laptop or such unless it's mobile (that is, my serviceable yet far too basic phone.) It's at best a college network I have access to through a municipal partnership involving my local library. Which, by the way, despite subsequent improvements, was hamstrung for troping purposes by a rather restrictive 1 hour timer (late summer 2014 the time I said screw it on that front, as you mods can discern quite simply wink ) was as is common for fairly obvious reasons. It has since expanded to three hours at minimum, but by the time I realized it, I had largely abandoned the place for interwebs purposes, as the only restriction at the college (for me) is "leave the terminal responsive past 5 hours total logon time" (and even that could be remedied by a simple question to tech support should an unexpected failure occur past then, which hasn't happened since that wrinkle was added.)

Tl;dr : I made a (remediable, yet undeniable) mistake accepting a herald position, and I respectfully ask to at least take a sabbatical till I can keep an eye on things at any given moment.' Even the schedule I posed to you, Mad, I now realize has several major snags, the least of which is my utter lack of income (I may still live at home, but I am far from your typical Basenent Dweller, especially since I do have a social life despite my apparently odd hours for one of my countrymen...I'm an incorrigible, I dare say vampiric'', night owl lately [lol] ). TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life indeed...mine may be (rather) comfy now, but I've brushed with homelessness more than once...don't ask.)

[up][up] Anything below a 2:1 ratio shouldn't be cut. This includes The Amazing Atheist, Feminist Frequency, and Not Always Right. Pages that have the minimum ratio but are being discussed for Useful Notes-ification include Tumblr. Pages that have the minimum ratio but are being discussed for Trope-ification include eBay. The pages that are ripe for cutting include Thunderfoot, The Other Side, and Lifehacker.

Should the crowner be closed until we sort this stuff out or would that make it more difficult to maintain it?

The crowner is both stale and stable. I'm going to lock it and we'll take the items one by one in order from the top and dispose of them according to the results. I can handle the ones that just need to be cut. Others are going to have to do the moves for those that simply need to be moved to another namespace ( the includes namespacing the wicks to the correct one) The ones that need to be rewritten and moved are going to take the most effort to finish up..

Here's what we're left with:

  • 32 (yeas:47 nays:15) 3.13 : 1:
eBay: Doesn't contain a work. Could be a Useful Notes page, but someone would have to fill out the description.
CONSENSUS TO CUT OR MAKE USEFUL NOTES

  • 26 (yeas:39 nays:13) 3.00 : 1
Tumblr: Troping user antics, including potentially controversial or squicky aspects of the site.
CONSENSUS TO CUT

  • 16 (yeas:29 nays:13) 2.23 : 1
    Thunderf00t: Invites drama.
CONSENSUS TO CUT

  • 14 (yeas:15 nays:1) 15.00 : 1
The Other Side: Not an actual fictional work.
CONSENSUS TO CUT

  • 13 (yeas:13 nays:0)
Lifehacker: Doesn't contain a tropeable work; the page consists solely of ZC Es from one article.
CONSENSUS TO CUT

  • 12 (yeas:29 nays:17) 1.71 : 1
    The Amazing Atheist: Invites drama.
NO CONSENSUS TO CUT; examples and wicks need to checked and cleaned of Natter, troping RL People and ROCEJ

  • 11 (yeas:30 nays:19) 1.58 : 1
    Feminist Frequency: Invites drama.
NO CONSENSUS TO CUT; examples and wicks need to checked and cleaned of Natter, troping RL People and ROCEJ

  • 6 (yeas:15 nays:9) 1.67 : 1
Not Always Right and related pages: Not so much a work as a whinefest/RL gossip cesspit; the main NAR page (and likely the others as well) also also has a major weblink ZCE problem.
NO CONSENSUS TO CUT; examples and wicks need to checked and cleaned of Natter, troping RL People and ROCEJ

Yoyo Games is poorly executed as an article, but it also contains a garbage trope list and as far as I can tell is not a creator in any way that we define the term. Proposing to cut.

Proposing to cut JustForFun.Our Gangsta Crib Yall

Reasons:

  1. It's in the wrong namespace.
  2. It's a closed group ("This should not be taken seriously, and should only really be read by members of the forum. So, um, if you're not a member, bugger off.)
  3. Most examples are Troping the users.
  4. Most examples are ZCE's
  5. Aside from namespace and wick clean-up edits, it hasn't been edited since April of 2014.
    1. This ties to the point above — the likelihood that those ZCE's will ever be expanded on with proper context is virtually nil.)
    2. There have been 38 edits since the page was launched in June of 2013. The first 27 were all made by the same person in the first 5 days, in the process of making the page. The remaining 11 are all namespace or renamed trope edits.
  6. It has 2 wicks ( one for its Laconic, one for the Index it's on)
  7. Since it was made in June of 2013, it has accumulated 19 inbounds.

So it's a non-performing, misplaced page for a "work" that is not a work at all, that cannot be accessed by anyone outside the group, that is poorly made, tropes real people, and is effectively dead.
