Websites cleanup

Go To

Ok, per mod decision, the purpose of this thread is to scrutinize and clean up pages about web sites. Other Sites, especially, has become a catch-all for "my favorite web site that I feel like pimping."

THE FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS:

  • A Web Site Is Not A Work For Troping Purposes: A website can contain tropable content, but the site itself does not automatically have a place with us simply by existing.
  • A Web Site That Is Not Tropable Can Sometimes Be Repurposed: It may have a place as a Useful Notes page, or serve as an index if it hosts a lot of works that we do trope.
  • User Antics Are Not Tropable: Trolls, mod decisions, forum drama. Such are Troper Tales and sources of spiritual decay. They must be purged, even from acceptable pages.
  • User Created Content Is Potentially Tropable: But most of it has its own categories already, such as Game Mod, Fan Fiction, or Journal Roleplay.

Put pages you believe should be completely cut in the crowner at the bottom. If you believe a page can be saved or migrated, make a post with details. Other Sites contains the primary targets right now, but any page about a web site should be scrutinized

Personally I think Sexypedia is worth keeping in some form because their wiki is heavily inspired by some of our own tropes. I don't think it's fair to trope it as a work, but this could be one of the few cases worth sending to JFF or something, "troping" the concept of a "Tumblr sexyman" and how it relates to some tropes/YMMV items on the wiki.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up] Maybe instead of an individual Sexypedia page, we could have an "Inspired by TV Tropes" JFF page for sites like this in general?

We do have One of Us, but I think a similar JFF page for other trope websites could be cool — the only issue is whether to consider websites created to compete and stuff like that.

I’d dispute that Uncyclopedia isn’t tropable. Many of their articles make up enough fictional stuff to have multiple tropes. Sure, many of their current work page’s examples could use work, but they do look like a good start, and I’d be hesitant to cut the page completely.

As for Sexypedia, it’s probably a different story. I don’t know the site at all, but looking at its page, most of the examples seem to simply be tropes that the characters they consider sexy are examples of, which are of course covered on their source works’ pages. (Although what [up] said about it being TVT-inspired could still make it worth noting here.)

[down] Their style of humour can certainly be quite bawdy, and anything listed here is probably pushing the definition of “humour” even for me, but they’re no Encyclopedia Dramatica. I guess they might be borderline by the P5’s standards, but I’d still give the page a a chance. [down][down] and [down][down][down] are right.

[up][up] That's very true, I hadn't considered that aspect of it — my bad!

I still think the website itself isn't exactly tropeable in the sense that other websites we have articles for are, but I wouldn't be against keeping it in some form if it has ties to here/has historical value. Maybe?

(Fwiw I really hope it doesn't sound like I'm arguing with you! I'm just trying to explain my own opinions. I don't feel super strongly one way or another about either of the websites I mentioned, I just wanted to bring them up in this thread because I felt like they might not fit the website guidelines. I am willing to drop this if there's a general consensus to keep them, and I have no intention of being difficult about it as ultimately it's a non-issue.)

[up] Fair. Though looking at Uncyclopedia briefly, they do have articles on real people and events that are highly fictionalised and biased. I don't feel confident enough to make a judgement about whether or not it violates the content policy (I couldn't find any pedo-pandering stuff, so it's not a P5 issue) but perhaps it could do with a review of some kind. And, as I said above, I don't want to be difficult about it. I'm just curious).

Looking a bit through it, Uncyclopedia seems fictionalized enough to be tropable

I agree with the concept of a Just For Fun of Sexypedia

I strenuously disagree with cutting Uncyclopedia using the argument that it "lacks narrative content" as a whole; by that standard, most musical artists would also have to be cut.

[up] True

Plus, there are narratives with Uncyclopedia

It takes real people, shows, music, and other media and creates an absurdist fictionalized biography and history stories on them

So, it has tons of Alternate History Tropes?

[up] Basically what the site is, just Alternate History taken to an entirely non-serious and completely ridiculous degree.

Thinking of moving Website.Vine to Platform since it fits under our definition of platforms - plus being a mobile-first app, "website" was always a bit of a misnomer imo - any objections?

I don't see why we need a page for Vine to start with. It's one of those platforms, like Youtube, whose content is too varied to really say much about.

At the very least, it should be made exampleless.

I had a think and my conclusion is to make Vine an example-less platform page like what we've done with YouTube. As I'm away from my laptop right now - where it's easier for me to do larger edits - I'll do it when I get home and let you know when it's done.

That's exactly why I posted here, but I don't know if consensus is necessary.

Personally I think an exampleless Platform page is fine. We have pages for former Vine stars like Drew Gooden and Danny Gonzalez, and we list tropes for their comedy vines on their pages.

Vine got moved to Platform, but the examples are still there. I might cut them out if that's OK with anyone?

Ishkurs Guide To Electronic Music is not really tropable. It is just a guy giving you his music opinions in the form of his personal list of music genres and microgenres.
