Just a Face and a Caption: Ominous Visual Glitch

Or more like, just a face. There's no caption. Kinda looks like it's been through several filters, not to mention that it's very dark.

A better example I can think of would be the second-to-last level in The Floor is Jelly, where the glitching effects is a great contrast to the otherwise Deliberately Monochrome environment, but I'm not sure if it's a great choice or not since it occurs near the end of the game. Is this a good choice?

EDIT: Wait a minute, why isn't the link working? I used the image uploader and it says it was successful in uploading, so I'm baffled as to why the link isn't working.

There's something wonky going on with the UR Ls of uploaded images; you have to take the "static." out to get them to show up. Here's the suggestion.

I think the current looks more ominous than the suggestion. Both look glitchy, though.

Looking at the examples on the page, if someone can get a screencap of the exact moment in Fight Club when Tyler points at the "cigarette burn" in the film, that would work.

Need a good caption to work, but here it is:

I like @5 with a caption.

"So medium-aware he knows where the film's spliced.", maybe?

I think the medium awareness distracts from the trope.

That doesn't look like a glitch. Isn't he just indicating where the flash to signal the projectionist to change reels is going to be? If so, it's not a glitch at all. Medium Aware yes, but not neither Ominous not a Glitch.

Can someone with a quicker "Print Screen" finger than mine catch the pixelization of the Station AI from the Questionable Content that's linked in Webcomics? I've tried a bunch of times and it's simply too brief and comes too irregularly for me to get it.

Having never seen Fight Club (that's been on my list), I'm not really sure what's going on here.

[up] Wow, you were trying way too hard. There's no need for fast timing when you can just download the gif and view it frame by frame. Here's something I put together at 250 since it's rather tall.

^^There are days I'm doing good to turn on the computer without setting it on fire. "...just download the gif and view it frame by frame..."tongue

But that works even better than I thought it would.

I kind of think that's a lot of panels for little payoff.

I like the current better than any suggestions.

It's not JAFAAC, because we're not missing any trope-relevant info about the character. The relavant part is the big ominous video-scratch-thing making it look like her head has been cut in half, and that's clearly visible.

This implies, quite correctly, that my mind is dark and damp and full of tiny translucent fish.

IMO none of these look good but my only idea would be a screenshot of one of the numerous Holodeck breakdowns in Star Trek.

The "trope" part of Ominous Visual Glitch (something that makes the trope not just People Sit On Chairs):

These effects are used to show that something weird, unnatural or paranormal is going on. It can be used to imply that there is something wrong with the character's mind, for example they're hallucinating or they are influenced by Subliminal Seduction.

The current picture demonstrates because of this, as it implies that either something supernatural happened to the girl or the girl's a ghost.

@10 works as well, as at first glance, the one "blinking" is a ghost. While in context, the character's actually a holographic "avatar" of a computer, it still counts due to the fact that "it can be used to imply that there is something wrong with the character's mind" is officially part of the trope.

Let's try something else from Fight Club:

[up] That, captioned "Three consecutive frames." or something else highlighting that Tyler's only there for a blip of time, would work, too.

TBH I like the current better than any of these, it is more elegant and I do not agree that it is JAFAAC.

I have to say, I think the current image is better than any of the suggestions. The girl looks positively ghostly, giving it an ominousness that the suggestions either lack entirely or require multiple frames to show.

That seems like a good argument. I'll support the current image.

I've launched the page and I think the image was added during the ykttw phase, so I let it be as it was. There are some suggestions in the archived discussion. I think I tried to grab screenshots from The X-Files or Star Trek tng, but at the end it was not very clear what it was supposed to be. I'm now on my tablet, but later I may look in my files and find those, and post them here.

I quite like the current - obviously since it was me who added it :-) - but perhaps I could add another pic to show how she looks when the cam is normal.

I also think the glitch from the horror Ring could work.

ETA: The current was not filtered at all; it is exactly as it appeared in the web video.
