I've heard that some piece of lore retconned "they dissolve in water" thing "the shock of sudden submersion splats them", but heck if I can remember where I heard that or if it's accurate at all.

It would make more sense, since it explains why they don't just all melt every time it rains or kill themselves every time they drink something with moisture in it.

Even in 3 they've made some cracks about Super Drowning Skills (notably the Pokémon Splatfest, since it's part of the reason Big Man is repping Water) so I think why they dissolve in water is probably just gonna come down to Rule of Funny at any given time.

What I heard is that they're basically 70% ink the way humans are 70% water, and that falling into water suddenly causes a shock that ruptures their skin/the outer membrane and causes them to dissolve into the water. Unsure how official that is though. If it's from an official interview, then it definitely reads like the devs coming up with an on-the-fly lore explanation for something they didn't put much thought into

Looking it up, most of the lines about water being fatal to lings (or causing them to respawn) are original to the international versions and were not in the Japanese script. For example:

Japanese dialogue: "It's OK to get heated during battles, but don't forget to stay hydrated!" / "We're all filled up from your kindness, Pearl!"

English dialogue: "Don't forget to hydrate between battles!" / "That seems like good advice...until you remember that water is lethal to us."

(of note is that while the NOE translation of Splatoon 1 changed a line about the Squid Sisters modeling swimsuits at Mahi-Mahi Resort, the NOA one did not)

I suspect it's not that water cause them to dissolve, but that they're physically incapable of swimming in water, so falling in water deep enough means they only way out in official Turf War is to splat and respawn (which has been established as them not actually dying), in "real" fights like the single player modes they straight up drown.

As seen with The Captain's tear at the end of Splatoon 3's story campaign, Inkfish are capable of holding water in their system, so drinking water at all isn't initially lethal to them.

It's really too much water that's the issue. And it seems to be related to the skin. If they are soaked, they go splat.

Especially with the hundreds of drinks that I make my Octoling consume.

I like the Ultra Signal and what it brings to the 3-way battles. I think it's a lot of fun to fight for it or try to protect it. I hope they make that a permanently choosable gameplay mode in the next game.

Or maybe just make it a Private Battle exclusive thing when the time comes

I remembered one of the comments from Captain Cuttlefish went along the lines of, "Careful not fall in the water, you know as squids, we can't swim! (Heh heh.)" A cheeky bit of Leaning on the Fourth Wall, but note that he specifically said, "can't swim" and not "water is deadly" or the like.

So the 'lings could just take a shower and be fine then?

Probably. They store water within themselves like humans do, as we've seen with characters like Marina and Captain 3 getting teary-eyed or crying. We know that this does not kill them or cause them physical pain. It's hard to imagine exposure to small amounts of water in a controlled environment (at least) causing them to melt

Ya know, when I was younger, I believed that they got sprayed with a substances that made them extremely vulnerable to water. How wrong I was.

Managed to go both 5-1 and 5-2 in my recent Series matches. 5-1 with a mix of Tower Control and Clam Blitz, and 5-2 on Zones with Humpback Pump Track and Robo ROM-en.

I'm still trying to figure out who's the person behind an Arknights themed plaza post that showed up in this video around 8:39. I think I'm the only one here that cares about both Arknights and Splatoon because I'm actually doing this.

ikasumi.art is a no go since it can't seem to load anything older than January of last year, the post was from September 2022 when Splatoon 3 just launched. I wish that site had a search or sort by date (ascending/descending) function.

Frye sometimes mentions going swimming at Mahi Mahi Resort, so Cephalings can swim, but something happens during Turf Wars.

In other news, today I managed to get every single colour chip in Side Order. One run with DJ Octavio's palette at maximum bias got me the last four I needed.

To finish, I'm going to do a no-chip run with Eight's palette.

A part of me kinda wishes Nintendo punished squidbagging in a There Is No Kill Like Overkill fashion - that is, as soon as it detects you're doing it on purpose (as opposed to trying desperately to swim away from danger but keep getting knocked out of it), you get splatted on the spot, and the "Splatted by X" notif reads as "Splatted by your own poor sportsmanship!"
