Lupin III

It's been a while since nobody created this topic. If there's something I wanna talk about to this anime, it's the Geneon version. Guess what's interesting in there?

I love Lupin personally, although I really feel like Geneon mishandled marketing him in North America (trying to modernize the dub especially)

Does anyone else wish the first TV Series would get a Stateside release (the episodes we got were the 2nd TV series)?

Exactly, their roles in this one are the character and Fujiko, respectively. It's one of the notable ones they're in together. Do you know any other roles those two are notable are?

Discotek is releasing the first series on DVD. The series was Hayao Miyazaki's "directorial debut", although worked only as an episode director.

Here's another example that Tony and Michelle got into besides Lupin and Fujiko: Shinbo and Chii.

I can't believe what I found out: Mr. X in the Geneon English dub is Uryu from Bleach.

I believe Mamo is getting a re-release as well from Discotek. Last I heard they were working on getting rights to some of the pre-existing dubs.

And if you're a Lupin fan, you are hopefully aware that Hulu has uploaded many of the second series dubs up for free viewing.

Well, I go to Veoh to watch the second series dub.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone hadn't heard, but Goro Naya, the original voice of Zenigata, passed away on March 5. Article at ANN here. Very sad, but he had been ill for a while, apparently, hence the decision to recast the last couple of specials.

Looking over his list of voices/dubs at various sources, what a marvelous legacy he left behind!

Last year, a discussion (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13331119010A44943900&page=1) lead to the creation of the Franchise Namespace. Lupin III has 2 Manga, 4 anime series, 1 live action (and a second fan-made) movie, over 25 animated films, and a video game. Apparently, it needs moving XD

I figured we could discuss what had to be done first, as the work is not going to finish in one day unless a really dedicated troper comes along.

Except for the live-action movie and the video game, all of these seem to fit in the catch-all "Anime and Manga" category.

I would agree with this, except for the fact that almost every incarnation of Lupin seems to exist in a slightly different universe, with different continuities for each, if continuity is even in effect, which it isn't always.

Really the only thing any of them have in common is that the leads are thieves... plus Zenigata (and even his job description changes at times).

If One Piece was able to get a "Franchise" designation despite its 1 manga and 1 anime being extremely similar (and I think the videogames are all fighters; oh wait I just remembered it has live stage shows in Japan, but then so do a lot of JC titles), then Lupin - which has far more spin-offs that tend to be wildly different - could use some sort of "mothership" page as well.

But... that's just, y'know, my opinion, man.

I was doing some namespace fixing when I came across a page with Franchise, and realized how much work might be ahead of me. On the bright side, this gives us an excuse to reorganize the work from the ground up if we are willing to discuss it.

Ever since the change of Anime/LupinIII to Manga/LupinIII the fact that A is so much Lighter and Softer than M has bugged me. We can create a work page that encompasses the Manga series, and do a recap page for them. Useful for referencing the episodes of Green and Red that recycled the plot from the Manga.

What are some of your ideas for organizing the franchise?

Okay, here's my proposal for the Lupin III organization:

• Franchise page is where the description given on Manga/LupinIII will go.
• On the Manga page, we put an image from the Volumes, list the six manga series, soft-split the volumes, and put each series in a folder that holds links to a Recap page for each of the manga chapters.
  • Recap naming pattern to be determined later. Right now we just create the page.
• On the Anime page, we put an image of Lupin's 4 best-known styles of jackets, and what's currently on the recap page.
• Each of the anime films gets turned into Anime/title and links back to the Franchise page.
• We make Film/LupinIII and put a redirect to Film/StrangePsychokineticEnergy until we have another live-action film. (Does the fan-made one have a work page, yet?)

Alternative suggestion: do we want to make a work page for each of the Anime Series? The tone and art is different enough, I wouldn't recommend some of the series to everyone. Conversely, if I know someone really likes Looney Tunes, the Pink Jacket Lupin would be my first recommendation.

I agree with all you said, except the separate pages for each of the anime series. We can just tell that every series are different in tones, put them in folders, and let people open which folder they want. I don't think there's a need for those kind of pages.

Also, we can put an image of the 4 jackets and a one-word or two-word description in the image caption.

Firstly, I want to get some organizing done. I wanted to talk with other Lupin-lovers, so we have an idea as to what the Franchise pages should look like when we're done, since this is a HUGE project, and only going to get larger. That involves getting ideas on how to handle things like the four different weekly series.

For example, Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine already has a page. If we're not having a page for Green/Red/Pink, then we are cutting that one, too. That's why making new pages crossed my mind.

Series 1 would deserve a work page if it was the only Lupin III series, so I'm pointing out that it's odd to lump all three four series onto one page. We could give each work their own page, so why don't we?

Understandable. Though the Woman Called Fujiko Mine series is very different in the franchise, since it's centered on Fujiko, not Lupin. It's part of the franchise, but still different from the Green/Red/Pink series, which are focused on Lupin. That's my own view on these things.

I'm also gonna look at the recap pages. I wanna check something.

I have a counterpoint, but I'd really rather discussion with several people.

I want to cross-wick the references when I'm done organizing the ReferencedBy.Lupin III page. I want to cross-wick them to Franchise.Lupin III or Anime.The Castle Of Cagliostro, but I don't want to do that until we have an idea behind organizing these works.

I don't know how it works. Can't we cross-wick to both? Or doing a separation of the works that reference stuff from the series/franchise and the works that only reference Cagliostro?

Gotta watch Cagliostro. Finished the series (apart from the Fujiko one) a couple of months ago.

We aren't, if we decide to fold Castle of Cagliostro into the main Anime page. Or a Lupin movies page. Or a Lupin Green Jacket works page.

Some references are to scenes from the first series. Most cameo references are to the Red Jacket series. We don't really need to link to the Franchise page if the reference is "that crazy chase scene early in Cagliostro". We can just link to that film.

Anime.Lupin III Green Jacket has a cult following. But Anime.Lupin III Red Jacket is what created the current Anime.Lupin III Yearly Specials tradition. Anime.Lupin III The Woman Called Fujiko Mine was in homage to both Anime.Lupin III Green Jacket and Manga.Lupin III, and very experimental in the "art house" symbolism. In contrast, Anime.The Castle Of Cagliostro and Anime.The Fuma Conspiracy are Action-Adventure romps with a very kid-friendly approach, which also inspired the Anime.Lupin III Yearly Specials trend.

Ok, then it's best to fold Cagliostro in the movies page.

I also see that you created a few red links. Do you want me to take care about any of them and write them? I can take care of one or two pages. Especially the Yearly Series page and the Fuma page.
