This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

Again, these are mostly formerly audience reaction tropes that were limited to in-universe examples.

Edit: There's also a bunch of quotes about real life on tropes that have been added to the No Real Life Examples Please list, which I'd consider the same issue.

No Real Life Examples, Please! does by default only apply to examples. Whether it extends to quotes, images etc. depends upon whether the reasons for NRLEP status would apply to them as well.

On the subject of the Inigo Montoya quote, should we use a note that reads something like this?

This quote is allowed to contain potholes due to Grandfather Clause: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1327331003042025100&page=124#3095

Do not alter it without discussion.

For no reason at all, I'd go with:

The Pot Holes in this page quote are permitted by moderator fiat due to Rule of Funny and being grandfathered in. For reference: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1327331003042025100&page=124#3095

Please do not change the quote without first bringing it up in discussion.

I don't think Rule of Funny should be cited, because it's not applicable to other quotes.

No, but the Rule of Funny and the grandfather clause is what drove the moderator decision. We can leave it out, but there's no point also mentioning the grandfather clause if the real reason is just "because a mod says so". May as well just say "permitted by moderator fiat". I think it's better to point out the logic behind the decision. That's subjective, though; "Because a mod says so" is also fine by me. I'm not offended by the thought of 3-4 quotes out of God-knows-how-many not quite adhering to wiki policy if there's a decent reason for it.

I just don't want to leave open something for someone to cite as precedent later on.

If someone tries to cite "moderator fiat" as a reason to do something not permitted except in very specific circumstances, they'll wind up explaining to the mods why they thought that was a good idea.

"Grandfathered" means it has to have existed on the site for a bloody long time. And such things can be subject to a case-by-case evaluation to see if it should still apply.

Citing Rule of Funny to get away with misbehavior will never, ever fly.

How about something modeled after the image notices?

Quote and potholes used with moderator permission: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1327331003042025100&page=124#3095

Please discuss any proposed changes in the forum thread first.

Also, we still need to add the potholes back on You Killed My Father—as soon as we can settle on a proper notice to warn against reversion.

Game Show Host has two quotes. I'd go with the first one.

[up]I agree. The second one merely restates the trope name, and adds nothing to the page.

The quote in Fate Worse than Death is similarly useless.

From the quotes page, I like the ones from The Dark Knight Rises or Bleach.

I took out the second of Game Show Host. Fool for Love and Love Martyr have the same quote.

Any more thoughts on the Inigo Montoya note? I don't mean to be pushy, but if no one objects, I'd really like to get the notes up and be done with it.

[up][up]That sounds much more appropriate for Love Martyr. Though Fool for Love doesn't have any obvious replacements.

(Possibly because it has a horrible name).

Links made with {{curly brackets}} or from putting a word in CamelCase isn't the same as a pothole, which is a link hidden behind other text. The Inigo Montoya quote does not have potholes in it, just page name links. No exception necessary.

[up][up]I think it suits Fool for Love better, because it sounds like someone playing up a manly bravado for his loved one.

The Understand the Unknown quote is much more suitable for Love Martyr than the current one. That, or the Midsummer Night Dream one.

[up][up][up][up] Well, apparently no one is interested in the reasons moderators do things, so the last note you proposed seems like the least objectionable.

For my two cents, I still think it would be best to add those reasons, since we do know them, and just stating "moderator fiat" by itself invites accusations of moderators doing whatever the hell they want without input or explanation, which, while that is within their purview, invites bitching from the proles.

That said, linking to the post is by extension linking to the stated reasons, so if someone is really that offended by mod fiat, they have a one-step link to the actual reasons.

[up] EDIT: Nevermind, I didn't see your previous post.

It does need something explaining why it's okay, otherwise it'll just end up in this thread being debated again. Maybe not a mod decision, but honestly, that exact argument has been made and was refuted. Having a mod state unequivocally that it's acceptable circumvents the whole issue.

As a side note, I also believe that non-potholed Blue Links are very tricky anyway because they tend to get misused as stock phrases. While each part of that quote is a stock phrase, it is also a trope and should not just be Blue Linked to every instance of a character saying it unless it fits the actual definition of the trope.

Whether it fits or not, just adding blue links is bound to invite trouble. It needs an explanation or a citation of the moderator decision.

...Besides all of which, a moderator made a statement. We literally have it just sitting there. Why not use it?

"No potholes in page quotes" is not the same as "no links at all in page quotes".

"Refuted"? How? That argument relies on nothing but definitions of terms.

I'm no mind reader, but when I see Madrugada say this...

The bluelinks and other special treatment

...I interpret that to mean that blue links are "special treatment." Not potholes specifically—blue links. However, Madrugada also said in the same breath that they were "tolerated under the Grandfather Clause and Just for Fun," so it is apparently an exception and should be fine on the page anyway. Given all that, I really don't understand why we wouldn't note that it's an exception when that's exactly what the mods seem to consider it.

That seems like a mistake to me. What special treatment? It is not all blue. It has no potholes. I guess the fact that it's on more than one page?
