Removing Gushing from the Wiki

Go To

So. Personal opinions on the main wiki aren't allowed, be they gushing or bashing. Now, bashing gets tolerated even less than gushing, and that makes sense; it leads to more flamewars.

But that doesn't mean we have to live with all the gushing either. This thread can serve as a center for keeping it in check. One function might be to alert people to pages that are really heavy in gushing, to the point that it's not just a quick fix and will need some assistance.

Okay, so I'm not the only one who thinks the example has a problem. Another thing is, does this count as He Panned It, Now He Sucks!? I always assumed that that trope was for critics whose fanbase turns on them when they bash something they like. A critic getting flak from the fanbase of a show that they criticized doesn't seem noteworthy to me.

Bringing this up from Escapist Character:

  • The Bastard Operator from Hell is the quintessential Escapist Character for netadmins. The early stories were rapid-fire blackmail/torment/abuse stories where the BOFH would perpetrate atrocity after atrocity upon the hapless end-users (spelled end-lusers) on his network in revenge for their wasting his precious time. Later stories are accounts of him and his assistant masterminding hilariously convoluted schemes to leverage or maintain their political untouchability around the office. Among the most memorable stories is the account of his negotiating overtime as well as meal expenses for after-hours network maintenance. When the boss grudgingly agrees that "Fine, I'll go as far as pizza," the BOFH wastes no time in ordering a $15,000 stainless-steel imported Italian pizza oven to put in the company cafeteria. And gets away with it scot-free. The number of bosses he's gone through, due in no small part to stress-induced cardiac arrest, is uproariously funny.

[up]I feel that needs a rewrite.

[up] I agree. I think the entire thing needs to be re-written, particularly to sound less gushy about the subject and more neutral.

From The Super Mario Bros. Movie:

  • He Really Can Act: Like many of the casting choices for the film, Jack Black as Bowser was met with some skepticism from fans after he was first announced, especially since he is typically known for playing goofy characters, with many wondering if Jack can pull off a character like Bowser. As the footage in the teaser trailer shows, yes, he can absolutely pull it off and pull it off he did, with his performance in the teaser footage alone quickly receiving widespread praise from fans and touted as a highlight of the teaser due to how genuinely threatening and badass he makes Bowser sound.

I am biased here because I thought Jack Black was a great choice for Bowser from day one, but I do not think this counts. He is arguably the most accomplished voice actor in the announced cast (Kevin Michael Richardson aside), has proven himself in dramatic roles (King Kong and The Holiday for examples), and is the star of one of the most successful animated films series ever. His acting ability isn't in doubt.

[up][up][up][up]Let me try:

  • The Bastard Operator from Hell stories became popular with system and network administrators and help desk personnel in the 1990s and 2000s, since the titular BOFH could get away with doing things to his users and other staff that tech support people frequently wished they could (up to and including blackmail, gaslighting and property damage).

[up] Sounds good. I'll change it to that.

[up][up] Re-write it to sound less gushy.

I realized many entries on Awesome.Glitchtale have gushing. EDIT: Or at least I think so. What do you all think?

[up] I mean, Awesome pages are supposed to be a little gushy, but there’s way too much ALLCAPS and Bold Inflation tied with ZCEs.

[up]Yeah, I understand entries are supposed to have a bit of gushing, I was wondering if it was more than necessary. Regardless, I agree with you that those aren't needed.

Is it just me, or is this entry rather gushy?

  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: 6 foot tall? Check. Blonde hair? Check. Blue eyes? Check. Imitating presence? Check. A deep, gruffy, voice? Check. All qualifications and even further could apply to Carter here.

The constant uses of "X? Check." and the edit reason ("I like Power Rangers. :)") makes me think it is.

[up] I thought "X? Check" writing wasn't supposed to be used? Or am I remembering wrong? And even then, blond isn't "dark-haired" technically, right?

If that's the case, it's misuse, since the character isn't even dark-haired, half the entry is Word Cruft, and there's the gushing on top of all that.

Found this on Andor:

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: When first announced and in the lead-up to it's release, Andor was generally met with ambivalence by the fandom and larger audience, seen by many as the odd-man-out of the slate of Disney+ spin-offs released in-between seasons of the beloved The Mandalorian. Some even accused Lucasfilm of scraping the bottom of the barrel for spin-off ideas by making a series about a supporting character from a single movie. Then release came and Andor ended up shocking everyone with it's incredible writing, direction, and production values, overnight going from being mocked or ignored to being hailed as not just the best of the Disney+ spin-offs (and the only one to match the quality of Mandalorian), but as one of the best Star Wars works ever made.

As much as I am also pleasantly surprised by the show, the language does strike me as overly gushy. Permission to tone down?

Example seems valid and I trust it’s good, but I doubt it’s that good. Tone it down.

I also don't really remember the discourse around it being that bad. One thing the Star Wars hatedom does a lot is ignore the fact that there are lots of people who are just excited about the next Star Wars thing and don't feel the need to engage in debating its merits to exist or whether it's a good idea for a spin-off or anything like that.

There are a lot of people who just liked Cassian in Rogue One and were happy to get more.

You thought it would fail entries are often full of gushing and over the top depictions of the original complaints, so that the finished product isn't just seen as good, but as a way for editors to say other people were "wrong."

If the example has to stay, it can get cleaned up by cutting the gushing.

Then release came and Andor ended up impressing everyone with its writing, direction, and production values, with positive word-of-mouth causing it to quickly be hailed as one of the best Disney+ spin-offs and the only one comparable in quality to The Mandalorian, to some even surpassing it.

Does this come off better?

On The Owl House:

  • Creator Worship: You'd be hard-pressed to find a fan who doesn't call Dana Terrace a "queen". Considering her tireless efforts to include groundbreaking queer content and fearlessness in the face of Disney (her own employers and practically gods in the entertainment industry) whenever they do something she opposes, one can see why.

I know this item obviously lends itself to gushing, and I definitely agree with this sentiment, but the writing feels maybe a bit too... put-on-a-pedestal-y?

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up]While I agree with what it's saying, I also agree it has gushing.

I'd fix it via: deleting "groundbreaking", removing "one can see why", and changing "Considering" to "This is because of". I also feel the "fearlessness in the face of Disney" part might need to be tweaked. What do you think of my suggeestions?

Yeah, the existence of the entry is fine but it's loaded with way too many charged terms. Tried my hand at rewriting it:

  • Creator Worship: You'd be hard-pressed to find a fan who doesn't call Dana Terrace a "queen", considering her efforts to include unambiguous queer content on the show and her openness in calling Disney out on things she opposes when they are her own employers, who have a lot of clout in the entertainment industry.

[up]Yeah, that's surely an improvement. Also, just to make sure when you said "loaded with way too many charged terms", you were talking about the terms I suggested to change right? (I just want be 100% sure, if it's alright.)
