Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even Fox News—FOX NEWS—is slamming Trump for his kissing of Putin's ass.
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsAnd Sweden is typically cooperative with NATO. The simulated nuclear strike on Stockholm took place while Sweden was participating in a joint operation with NATO.
The Russians see the Swedes as basically NATO in everything but name. This goes way back to the Cold War, when Sweden was going to help out NATO in the event of WW3.

They should have sent a poet. And yet they'll be back to kissing his ass in T-3 seconds from when he touches down on US soil again, because this is such transparent pandering bullshit.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies. The announcement was made by Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jessie K. Liu, and Nancy Mc Namara, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office.
Mariia Butina, 29, a Russian citizen residing in Washington D.C., was arrested on July 15, 2018, in Washington, D.C., and made her initial appearance this afternoon before Magistrate Judge Deborah A. Robinson in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She was ordered held pending a hearing set for July 18, 2018.
Both Sweden and Finland are strategically located in such a way that controlling the Baltic Sea necessitates at the very least the control of Gotland and Åland. An eternal pain in defence planning that.

Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleLink about Fox not kissing Trump's ass for once.
Think Trump manages to watch Fox & Friends while abroad?

Angry IKEA customers.

New theme music also a boxNo but it’s part of the EU, a organisation that Russia under Putin is commited to destroying.

Because Finland is the greatest enemy to all.
Perkele.
Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.Putin is a laughingstock IMO. He's obsessed over Russia being a "besieged fortress" and yet the very world order he apparently wants to destroy has done far more to keep people like him in power.
Plus the idea that he and Trump have a "bromance" is silly and it reminds me of how close buddies he was to Bush. He likes them because they're stupid and easy to manipulate, and not because he actually shares their policy preferences.
This tweet sums up the post-summit reaction well.....

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherThat tweet is the dumbest thing I've seen in a hot minute.
No shit Trump was going to kowtow to Putin. That's the point. No one is surprised that he did. The fact that he did so hard that even his own propaganda wing can't defend him is impressive.
You can have low expectations and can (and should) still call Trump out when he's shitty. The tone of the tweet seems to indicate exactly the kind of lame-ass "Trump will be Trump, there's no point trying to hold him accountable" attitude that's so toxic.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. It's kind of true, though. I remember when some in the media thought sending US tanks to Ukraine was a good thing, as if it definitely wouldn't result in more Ukrainians getting killed, or the war eventually spilling out of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.
Plus, have you even seen how unwilling Republicans are to hold Trump accountable? I'm not sure a Democratic-controlled House will change that especially if Republicans keep the Senate, which is very likely even with huge Democratic turnout.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherI really have no idea what point you're trying to make here. You're making a bunch of nonsequiturs.
Not even ones I necessarily disagree with, but you're saying them like they're relevant to the discussion at hand or are a hot take.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Sending forces to Ukraine probably would have been a good idea. The media wasn't wrong about that one.

They should have sent a poet.If nothing else a peacekeeping force to ensure s truce so that a reconciliation process could occur would have done a ton of good.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranIt might have led to conflict between Russian forces and the Peace Keepers,Russia would it as an invasion
New theme music also a boxThat assumes Russia isn't willing to start nuclear conflict to win the war. When you're a cornered regime, you have to do anything necessary to stay on top.
Conflicts based on ideological motivations always end in catastrophe for all sides. Besides, do you really think Putin cares a lot about human life, let alone his own people? Hell his people would probably be willing to die with him if it means salvation.

"The devil's got all the good gear. What's God got? The Inspiral Carpets and nuns. Fuck that." - Liam GallagherIf they entered the territory yes, but I’m talking about setting up on the border, honestly you’d want a Russian continent as part of it if it was going to be serious effort.
That or you put western troops out west so as to free up Ukrainian forces to be moved towards the front.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranEven on the border,Russia would feel threatened, you'd have multiple cases of 'friendly fire' Russia would find a way to justify their attacks on the 'Peace Keepers'
New theme music also a boxUnlikely. Directly shooting at NATO troops but claiming "It's an accident"? Russia isn't stupid.
Avatar SourceHave you actually done any research into the political situation in Russia and into Putin's MO and the ideologies surrounding him and post-Soviet politics in the region or are you just going to spout generalized statements and try him like some caricature of what people think dictators are?
Oh really when?Yeah, the idea that Russia would start a nuclear war or attack NATO troops in Ukraine is just ridiculous.
A peacekeeping force there would have done a lot of good because it would have both minimized the spread of the conflict and detracted from Russian attempts at deniability. NATO intervention could also have kept the Ukrainian military from getting torn apart so quickly.

Technically Sweden is in a Mutual Defense Treaty with Norway and Denmark...the latter of which is a NATO country, soooooo....
