First official look at Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker movie.
Can't believe I'm in love with this movie now.

I'm liking this. And I'm sure people are already freaking out somewhere on the internet, but I doubt this is endgame makeup. More like baby's first Joker.

Look, I'm all willing to be surprised, but:

I am honestly more excited for The Joker movie than I thought. We haven't even gotten a trailer yet. And I have high hopes for it. I will have faith since I know this isn't apart of the DCEU. But funny enough, I see many complaining about how he looks. Here are two things you need to understand. First of all, this is looking like him before he becomes The Joker. When he's just a terrible comedian. And secondly... do you remember a man named Heath Ledger? Yeah, the guy who was hated for being casted as The Joker. And was attacked because his Joker looked wrong and dumb. Well Joaquin Phoenix is getting the same treatment. And he's a brilliant actor with great people working on this movie. I think he'll be one of the best Jokers yet. And will show how great DC can be.

I wish I shared this enthusiasm.

Aha. Cesar Romero.

Joaquin Phoenix has a kind of restrained, demented energy in real life, and this is an origin story. I'm actually looking forward to seeing him break off the leash over the course of the movie.

Y’know something, that 25 second test footage really gives me a good idea as to what we are getting into with this film:

  • This take of the character will borrow elements from many Jokers including Ceasar Romaro, Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. Hell the costue looks like the one from the Batman TAS (or better yet how he looked in the 70s and 80s, fitting considering the setting).
  • Phoenix is going to give a portrayal of the character that is akin to Norman Bates from Psycho or the main protagonist(?) of Maniac. He will be someone that we can relate to initially but slowly (and disturbingly) turn into a different person by the end of the film.
  • Speaking of Maniac, I think based on the way it is shot the movie will pay homage to the many slasher films of the time this movie will take place in.

So in short, holy shit the DCEU are gitting gud.

[up] It's not part of the DCEU. But still we could see more movies like this if it becomes a huge success.

Its not? Huh. Well the point still stands that they are at least putting effort in improving their films.

Speaking of Joker, even David Ayer now admits the forehead tattoo was a stupid idea. He's actually rather candid about the mistakes he made on Suicide Squad, and it makes me respect him a lot that he's willing to admit where he went wrong.

[up]Meh, I feel it was leto acting the main thing wrong, people can forget or even like weird things as long the acting was good.

Also, I dont like the idea of making the joker the villian, it always result on him hijacking he movie.

The basic idea of the Joker as a Tattooed Crook was actually quite ingenious. People went crazy over how he looked in the first photo, but in the nightclub scene where everyone around him is wearing garish outfits, excessive piercings and full body tattoos he really didn't seem all that out of place. They also paired a lot of the same stuff onto Harley, they both fit in the world that was created. Of course, anything you do to an actors face will end up being what the audience is looking at for much of the movie and performance, so something like the forehead "damaged" tattoo has a chance at being more of a distraction, especially when he already has green hair, white skin and red lips.

Reminds me of How I Met Your Mother regarding Ted giving a bunch of criminals nicknames based on their most notable trait, a guy with an eyepatch, scar, black glove and cat complained about being called his real name and Ted says "You have too much going on, you get ONE thing!"

[up][up][up] I actually liked where they went with Joker in SS in terms of what he is. Being a reasonably powerful, if unstable gangster made a lot more sense than "he's a clown that just... kinda... wins?"

It was the performance, the tattoos (not tattoos in general, but the ones actually used... "Damaged" was a bit on the nose), and his use in the plot that soured me on him.

There really wasn't enough of him in the movie to judge if the performance was good or not. Something like "Damaged" on his forehead was just silly, and not in the way they intended. It lended to the whole unfortunate Hot Topic vibe.

[up]To be fair a lot of people said that about Joker makup in the dark night, that it was silly, that make him look like a fan atempt of the joker, the whole thing with the mouth was really critized in the leaked pictures.

But yeah, SS comit the biggest sins of the joker:a) give him little screen time and b) make him a secondary chararter, something that the joker by is very nature as a chararter cant have.

I never had a problem with the Dark Knight Joker design. Miles ahead of what we got here, imo.

I'd be more surprised if it wasn't a fakeout.

But I think the thing about TDK's Joker is that it earns those scars. It's a hell of a performance — he feels elemental, like something that just manifested in an alley somewhere, an equal and opposite reaction to Batman that simply had to happen. Suicide Squad's Joker, like a lot of that movie, has a very the over-the-top look but is really very tame and derivative once you see him in action.

The Joker and Harley movie script features a kidnapping of Dr. Phil, played by “hopefully” Dr. Phil.
