Then again, even people who hate that game liked Mephilles. And it isn't like cerberus syndrome was that game's only issue.
There are some fans who feel that Mephiles,Black Doom,Ifrit, etc goes against the tone of the Sonic games....whatever that is. Mario also has a similar stigma regarding PMTTYD, SPM, Pi T,SMRPG.
"Eratoeir is a Gangsta."Ifrit perfectly fits the tone of the Sonic Series
It's the big monster Sonic goes Super Sonic at the end of the story to deal with (yes yes I know Super Sonic isn't in the Rivals games)
Also I feel like Mephiles, done right, would be a very good recurring villain. They just have to make him not suck
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniEvery time the series tries to do a non-Eggman villain, it feels lacking for this or that reason. I can't think of any villains that are on par with Eggman.
Gerald Robotnik, Chaos, Metal Overlord, Merlina.
People loved the Metarex.
Merlina I'd argue was better than Eggman, though it wouldn't make sense for her to be a recurring villain.
Oissu!Forgot about Gerald and Chaos. They're good antagonists.
It's funny that over a decade of games where Robotnik got punked as the main villain lead to an onslaught of games where he's the one and only final boss even when he maybe shouldn't have been (Forces and Lost World in my opinion).
Chaos isn't exactly a "character"...
The backstory is what makes him work.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Erazor Djinn wasn't a bad villain either, come to think of it, though he kind of suffered from Orcus on His Throne.
Oissu!I decided to start up my copy of Advance and I completely forgot how anticlimactic the (normal) final boss. I spent hours getting through the last three zones and it took multiple tries to beat the zone 6 boss, but then the final one takes 3 minutes.
Unsurprisingly, this is not the final ending. You need to get all the Chaos Emeralds to get the true ending (which I won't do because I've never been able to get all the emeralds in any title that doesn't outright hand them to you). I played this game all the time circa 2002-2004 and I didn't even know the emeralds were in the game until a few years ago. I came across a spring by chance and realized the game actually had Special Zones. They're impossible to find without searching.

I've never even seen a special zone in Sonic Advance 2.
On account of what idiot thought the way to access them was a good idea?
I don't like any of the games' unlocks for special zones other than Sonic 1 and 2. Collect rings, hold onto them, and jump through a warp is way better than having to actively comb the levels, not to mention you don't get a second chance if you screw up, and have to find another warp ring.
The issue with other villains is that they tend to either be eldritch horrors with no character to begin with or if they do have character, they're woefully underutilized.
Since Eggman is the primary villain, he is inevitably going to dominate the spotlight, leaving little room to flesh out other villains before people start wondering "Where is Eggman"
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.I didn't mind them in 3 and K because I didn't find it very hard to find the rings and Blue Sphere is pretty fun imo, but I can see why alternative ways of getting the Emeralds could be tricky.
Lost World 3DS's Emerald stages were the absolute worst by a wide margin though.
Oissu!I hate how the first two games do it.
Not only do the games (or at least the first one; I can't remember about 2) not have save systems or passwords for each level, but you have to beat every level with 50 rings and finish the Special Stages? I don't understand how people make that look so easy. I have enough time beating the game without losing my lives, nevermind keeping 50 rings until the end of a single level.
I see Chaos Emeralds as an extra thing for those who really want to 100% the game. For everyone else, just beating the game is fair enough.
I've tried Blue Sphere twice and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. The most fun I've had in a Special Stage is CD.

I have a hard time getting into Sonic Mania because I fail the Special Stages and I feel bad.
Don't; the special stages are honestly just not very good.
What confused you about Blue Sphere, if I might ask? It seems pretty self-explanatory to me. Unless you're going for all perfects I guess, which requires some thought in the later stages.
Oissu! As an extra: Sonic 06 already tried to go Final Fantasy. Guess how well that went.
You never know. Lots of people like SatAM Robotnik.
On a side note, I can see Kefka pissing off Sonic with his vexing demeanor; the latter of which thinking it's too much even for him. Not to mention Sonic would find Kefka's twisted sense of humor repulsive.
Since Eggman is the primary villain, he is inevitably going to dominate the spotlight, leaving little room to flesh out other villains before people start wondering "Where is Eggman"
And what if a villain like you described had a vivid characterization AND was a recurring character? Hell, what if there were some games in which the Eldritch Abomination is the Big Bad and Eggman doesn't appear at all?

So someone like Ecolo except in Sonic? I think it could work, but Sega would have to stand their ground in establishing this new character rather than bending at fan pressure and/or taking the wrong message from fan distaste.
Also, Sega doesn't exactly have the best track record of making Expies from their other series into Sonic villains. Black Doom, anyone?

Oissu!I actually like Blue Sphere a lot, it's Mania's chase minigame that bothers me because the Warp Rings are hard to find and the actual minigame is kind of a crapshoot. I don't like having to find the Warp Rings when I wanna go fast and platform.

I was thinking something more like Nyarlathotep.
And what if said villain was portrayed as the following:
- A charismatic, albiet monstrous bastard.
- Hurting Sonic and his friends on a personal level; in contrast to Eggman's more grandiose schemes. Kind of like HIM from The Powerpuff Girls.
- A total creep.
- Pushing Sonic's abilities and beliefs to their very limits and/or being the only character that he TRULY hates.
- The Greater-Scope Villain of the Sonic series in general.
Of course this is speaking if he's done right.

May we analyze how much of a Cerberus Syndrome someone like Kefka would bring to whatever he appears in? We're talking about the man who became a god and caused the Sundering of the world in the process.
As an extra: Sonic '06 already tried to go Final Fantasy. Guess how well that went.

Growing up, it's like a civil war, don't turn away, it's something you can't ignore...
