Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

[up] General consensus is that the unintended message of the run was 'Both sides are equally bad so the best thing to do is nothing.'

Like Sam letting a bunch of rich criminals go because apparently arresting them will ruin the economy.

That isn't entirely what happened. Sam pointed out that while they could avoid prison, they'd still be subject to a very long trial that would prove to be bad PR (there have been real life instances of people whose lives were wrecked by high profile trials despite not going to jail). So Sam says to pick a fall guy among their group. They pick the chairman of the board to take the fall.

Spencer's questionable stuff is mostly Secret Empire and that's mostly because Marvel made him bring back Good Steve and replace Sam with him.

Secret Empire has the feel of something that was changed partway through.

Even before the change in direction, it was a bland, boring dreary event.

I'm not here to derail the thread, but I have to break the sad news about comics.

In June 27, 2018 - Spider-Man's co-creator, Steve Ditko passed away at age 90 due to heart failure.

He will be dearly missed.

Y'know, one of the "What If Someone ELSE was Bitten by the Spider?" routes I'm suprised they haven't taken is "What If Harry Osborn was Bitten by the Spider?"

Also, I wonder if the Spidey What Ifs are set before Spider-Verse, because if they were tie-ins to Spider-Geddon they would be marketed as such.

[[down]] For some reason I thought that had already happened, but I guess I must have misremembered. Though ultimately I think he'd be more or less the same, in the sense that he still an Ax-Crazy Corrupt Corporate Executive with superpowers.

Though I guess that DOES leave the question of who rises to oppose him...

What if Norman got bit?

A Harry who got bit was in Web-Warriors, though he was also a Goblin who used his "hybrid" powers to overthrow his father.

A story where Norman got bit is going to be in one of the Spider-Geddon tie-ins.

Norman Osbourne: I would like to recreate the Parker Oz accident under more scientific environments. Please, consider this: if the spider venom gave Parker the enhanced strengths of a spider — then treating the Oz with my own DNA and injecting it mainline... will what? It will give me the enhanced strengths... of me.
Random scientist: You, sir? You want to inject yourself with the Oz compound?
Norman Osbourne: Glad we understand each other. Let's crunch some numbers and get this next phase rolling along.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

[up] Ugh, I know you're a fan of the Ultimate Universe, but according to this solicit (at the bottom of the page) this isn't really based on the Ultimate Universe

The question was "What if Norman got bit?". In that comic (that lasted much longer and got into much higher detail than a mere one-shot event like Spidergedon will do) there was a clear answer to that question. Of course, other comics may provide alternative answers.

But that didn't have Norman get spider powers

That's completely not in spirit with my suggestion

A story where the villain has the same powers than the hero? Isn't that a bit overused?

And that's not the issue being considered, since solicits indicate that Spider!Norman will be opposed by a Goblin-esque Harry. Not the same set of powers.

Also Ultimate never really gave Norman the same powers as Peter, at least not in a "both are Spider-Men" way.

And if you DO consider them as having the same powers etc, wouldn't that be "overused," to use your term?

You're right. They should do something original, like turn Norman Osborn into the Hulk.
