YMMV / Traffic (2000)

• Adaptation Displacement: Outside the UK, this film is much better known than the British TV series on which it originally is based on.
• Award Snub: It won four of its five Academy Award nominations including Best Director and other major categories but lost Best Picture to Gladiator, which only won one major category (Best Actor) besides Best Picture.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Michael Douglas having a drug addicted child becomes much tougher to watch after his real life son Cameron Douglas developed a serious drug problem that eventually led to a notable stay in prison.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Fans of Wednesday might be morbidly amused at seeing Morticia Addams ordering a car bombing that unintentionally kills Gomez.
• Nightmare Fuel: In one scene, Seth, Caroline, and their friends are freebasing heroin when a fellow new student joins in, only for the guy to start sweating profusely, lose concentration, collapse on the floor and begin convulsing. Understandably, the teenagers freak out. Somebody points out that the student is turning blue and isn't breathing. Caroline panics, saying that she can't call a responsible adult (like her father) to aid them because it's only 3 a.m.. So, they just drop the OD'ing student off at a hospital.
• Retroactive Recognition:
  • Viola Davis is the counselor Caroline sees after her arrest.
  • John Slattery is the prosecutor Robert meets with to get the charges against Caroline dropped.
